  • The lubrication characteristics of high-speed ball bearings has been investigated empirically using 45mm bore split inner ring ball bearings employed in small industrial gas turbine engines with oil-jet lubrication method. For the close structural simulation, experiments carried out with bearing mounting supports of real engines, such as bearing housings and oil nozzle assemblies with squeeze film dampers. Thus the results of tests can be directly applied to the design and the development of gas turbine engines. Testing was done by varying operating speeds, axial load on bearings, and lubricant flowrates. During testing, the temperature of bearing at outer-ring face, the power consumption of the driving motor, and the rotating resistance of the bearing were measured. From this study, the representative factors for lubrication characteristics at high speed was found, and the most important one was not operating speed but axial load up to 1.95 million dmN speed and 303 kgf axial load. Furthermore, the detailed variation of the rotational resistance of the bearing could be visualized by measuring the change of the radial load under the bearing supports. The rotational resistance consists of the frictional resistance and the bearing-cavity oil resistance.

  • Sealing an oil-air mixture plays important roles to have an enhanced lubrication for high speed spindle. Current work is emphasized on the investigation of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve the sealing capability of conventional labyrinth seal, air jet is injected against through the leakage flow. It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. In this study, both of a numerical analysis by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement. Both of the turbulence and the compressible flow model are introduced in CFD analysis. The sealing effect of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude are studied for various parameter in the experiment. The results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient. Effects of sealing improvement are explained as decreasing of effective leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger.

  • This paper presents the thermal characteristics analysis of a high-speed motor-separated spindle system consisted of angular contact ball bearings and built-in motor with oil-jet lubrication. The spindle system is composed of the main spindle and sub-spindle which are mechanically connected by a flexible coupling. The spindles are supported by two front and rear bearings, and the built-in motor is located between the front and rear bearings of the sub-spindle. The thermal analysis model of spindle system is constructed by the finite element method, and the thermal characteristics in the design stage are estimated based on temperature distribution and heat flow under the various testing conditions related to material of bearing ball, spindle speed and coolant temperature.

초음속 유동장에서의 충돌제트 특성에 대한 실험적 연구 (An experimental study on the characteristics of transverse jet into a supersonic flow field)

  • When a secondary gaseous flow is injected vertically into a supersonic flow through circular nozzle, a complicated structure of flow field is produced around the injection area. The interaction between the two streams produces a strong bow shock wane on the upstream side of the side-jet. The results show that bow shock wave and turbulent boundary layer interaction induces the boundary layer separation in front of the side-jet. This study is to analyze the structure of flow fields and distribution of surface pressure on the flat plate according to total pressure ratio using a supersonic cold-flow system and also to study the control force of affected side-jet. The nozzle of main flow was designed to have Mach 2.88 at the exit. The injector has a sonic nozzle with 4mm diameter at the exit of the side-jet. In experiments, The oil flow visualization using a silicone oil and ink was conducted in order to analyze the structure of flow fields around the side-jet. The flow fields are visualized using the schlieren method. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic solution is also compared with experimental results.

인공지능을 이용한 이종액체 정상 상태 혼합의 혼합과정 해석 (Analyses of Steady State Mixing Process of Two-Liquids Using Artificial Intelligence)

  • Two liquids which are generally used as fuels of rockets are mixed and their mixing process is quantitatively investigated by the use of particle image velocimetry (PIV). As working fluids for the liquid mixing, Dimethylfuran (DMF) and JetA1 oils have been used. Since the specific gravity of DMF is larger than that of JetA1 oil, the DMF oil has been set at the lower part of the JetA1 oil. For better visualization of the mixing process, Rhodamin B powder has been blended into the DMF oil. An agitator having 3 blades has been used for mixing the two liquids. For quantitative visualization, a LCD monitor has been used as a light source. A color camera, camcoder, has been used for recording the mixing process. The images captured by the camcoder have been digitized into three color components, R, G, and B. The color intensities of R, G, and B have been used as the inputs of the neural network of which hidden layer has 20 neurons. Color-to-concentration calibration has been performed before commencing the main experiments. Once this calibration is completed, the temporal changes of the concentration of the DMF has been quantitatively analyzed by using the constructed measurement system.

  • We present an experimental investigation on emulsions created during the impact process between a surfactant-laden droplet and an oil layer on water. By varying the surfactant concentration and the viscosity of oil layer, we created emulsions and visualized them using multi-dimensional high-speed imaging. Our analysis shows that the emulsions are more likely to be unstable and decay within a minute if the impacting droplet contains more surfactant. We also found that there are three mechanisms of generation of emulsions depending on the concentration of surfactant and the viscosity of oil layer; the jet pinch-off, cavity pinch-off, and tearing of oil layer. Jet and cavity pinch-off turned out to be dominant mechanisms for high oil viscosities, while tearing of oil layer is dominant for low oil viscosities. Our result is potentially useful in designing optimal dispersant properties for offshore oil contamination.

항공안전 확보를 위한 항공유(Jet A-1) 품질관리 필요성 (Necessity of Quality Control for Aviation Fuel(Jet A-1) to Secure Aviation Safety)

  • 항공기 연료 결함으로 인한 사고는 CICTT에서 규정하는 사고유형 34개 중 상위 13번째를 차지할 정도로 중요하다. 유통과정과 보관환경 등에 따라 수분이나 오염물질의 유입되어 항공기 사고가 발생하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 장기간 보관 항공유의 물성변화를 확인하고자 JET A-1 항공유를 금속캔에 보관하여 6개월 이후의 변화를 관찰하였다. 그 결과 장기간 보관된 항공유는 품질기준을 만족하였으며, 연료유의 안정성도 높은 것으로 확인되었다. 하지만 해양경찰 항공기와 같이 임무의 특성상 항공유를 선박과 육상 저장시설, 유조차등에 분리하여 보관하고 있는 상황에서는 내외부 환경 변화로 인해 수분이나 오염물질의 유입 가능성이 높다. 또한, 오염물질에 대한 분석은 현존 검, 증류성상 등으로 분석이 가능하지만 수분의 경우는 국내외 표준과 국내법령에서 물 분리지수를 통한 항공유의 수분 분리능력을 판단할 뿐 수분함량에 대한 분석이 수행되지 않고 있다. 이에 수분함량에 대한 품질관리 기준을 추가하고 국내외 표준과 법령을 획일화하는 개정을 수행하여 항공 안전성을 확보해야 할 것이다.

동북아 3국의 석유수급 의미의 재검토 : 원유, 석유제품 생산과 수출입, 그리고 정제시설을 중심으로 (The Meaning of the Oil Market Supply and Demand in three Northeast Asian Countries)

  • 동북아 3국(한국, 중국, 일본)의 원유시장 수급과, 원유수급에 영향을 주는 석유제품별 수급 현황을 살펴보는 것은 원유와 석유제품수급에서 발생할 수 있는 석유안보의 의미를 검토하는데 도움을 준다. 2006년 동북아 3국의 석유시장에서는 1,060만 배럴/일의 수급불균형이 발생하였고, 2030년에는 1,550~2,200만 배럴/일의 불균형이 발생할 것으로 전망되며, 이러한 수급불균형은 국가간 교역으로 해결되고 있다. 원유소비는 다양한 석유제품의 수요로 나타나는데, 2005년 중국은 경유>휘발유>연료유>LPG>나프타>등 항공유, 일본은 경유>휘발유>나프타>등 항공유>연료유>LPG, 한국은 나프타>경유>연료유>LPG>등 항공유>휘발유 순의 수요패턴을 보였다. 수요가 주어진 경우, 석유제품의 공급을 담당하는 각국의 주어진 정제시설규모는 공급 측면에서 석유제품의 수불균형에 영향을 미친다. 본 연구는 관련하여 3국의 상압증류시설과 이용률에 관해서 함께 살펴본다. 본 연구는 원유와 석유제품의 수급, 그리고 정제설비시장의 국가별 분포와 계획 등과 석유안보의 개념이 무관하지 않음을 실제 자료를 통해 평가해 보고, 석유안보 확보를 위한 다양한 방안마련에 대해 논의한다.

손상된 라이저로부터 유출된 기름 확산에 대한 수치해석 (Numerical Investigation on Oil Spill from Damaged Riser)

  • 해양에서 시추작업 중 라이저가 손상되어 기름유출이 발생하면 경제적인 피해 뿐 아니라 해양환경에 막대한 피해를 가져오게 되므로 사고 발생 시 신속하게 사고에 대처해야 될 뿐만 아니라 초기의 기름 유출량 및 확산 정도를 파악하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 소스코드가 공개된 전산유체역학 라이브러리인 OpenFOAM을 이용하여 손상된 라이저로 부터 기름이 유출되는 현상을 해석하였다. 수치방법을 검증하기 위해 제트 유동과 밀도 차에 의한 확산 문제인 Rayleigh-Taylor instability를 해석하였다. 라이저의 손상된 크기, 기름 유출량, 손상된 위치, 해류의 속도를 변화시키며 해석하였다. 해석 결과 기름이 유출 될 경우 수면에 도달 할 때까지 이동한 거리 및 시간을 예측하여 기름 확산에 대비할 수 있는 가이드라인을 제시하였다.
