  • The drilling angle of the well is an important factor that can affect the sand production process and make its destructive effects more severe or weaker. This study investigated the effect of different well angles on sand production for the Asmari Formation, located in one of the oil fields southwest of Iran. For this purpose, a finite difference model was developed for three types of vertical (90°), inclined (45°), and horizontal (0°) wells with casing and perforations in the direction of minimum and maximum horizontal stresses, then coupled with fluid flow. Here, finite element meshing was used, because the geometry of the model is so complex and the implementation of finite difference meshes is impossible or very difficult for such models. Using a combined FDM-FEM model with fluid flow, the sand production process in three different modes with different flow rates for the Asmari sandstone was investigated in this study. The results of numerical models show that the intensity of sand production is directly related to the in-situ stress state of the oil field and well drilling angle. Since the stress regime in the studied oil field is normal, the highest amount of produced sand was in inclined wells (especially wells drilled in the direction of minimum horizontal stress) and the lowest amount of sand production was related to vertical wellbore. Also, the Initiation time of sand production in inclined wells was much shorter than in other wellbores.

  • This study was aimed to investigate whether an oxygen inhibition layer (OIL) is essential for the interfacial bonding between resin composite layers or not. A composite (Z-250, 3M ESPE) was filled in two layers using two aluminum plate molds with a hole of 3.7 mm diameter. The surface of first layer of cured composite was prepared by one of five methods as followings, thereafter second layer of composite was filled and cured: Group 1 - OIL is allowed to remain on the surface of cured composite; Group 2 - OIL was removed by rubbing with acetone-soaked cotton; Group 3 - formation of the OIL was inhibited using a Mylar strip; Group 4 - OIL was covered with glycerin and light-cured; Group 5 (control) - composite was bulk-filled in a layer. The interfacial shear bond strength between two layers was tested and the fracture modes were observed. To investigate the propagation of polymerization reaction from active area having a photo-initiator to inactive area without the initiator, a flowable composite (Aelite Flow) or an adhesive resin (Adhesive of ScotchBond Multipurpose) was placed over an experimental composite (Exp_Com) which does not include a photoinitiator and light-cured. After sectioning the specimen, the cured thickness of the Exp_Com was measured. The bond strength of group 2, 3 and 4 did not show statistically significant difference with group 1. Groups 3 and 4 were not statistically significant different with control group 5. The cured thicknesses of Exp_Com under the flowable resin and adhesive resin were 20.95 (0.90) urn and 42.13 (2.09), respectively.

  • The automatic design of shell & tube type oil cooler can be used in real industrial environments. Since the automatic design system is intended to be used in small companies, it is designed to be operated well under environments of CAD package in the personal computer. It has adopted GUI in design system, and has employed DCl language. Design parameters to be considered in the design stage of shell and tube type oil cooler are type of oil cooler, outer diameter, thickness, length of tube, tube arrangement, tube pitch, flow rate, inlet and outlet temperature, physical properties, premissive pressure loss on both sides, type of baffle plate, baffle plate cutting ratio, clearance between baffle plate outer diameter and shell inner diameter and clearance between baffle plate holes. As a result, the automatic design system of shell & tube type oil cooler is constructed by the environment of CAD software using LISP. We have built database of design data for various kinds of shell & tube type oil coolers. The automatic design system have been assessed and compared with existing specification of design. Good agreement with Handbook of heat exchanger and design dta of real industrial environments has been found.

  • The selective plugging strategy of Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR) involves the use of microbes that grow and produce exopolymeric substances, which block the high permeability zones of an oil reservoir, thus allowing the water to flow through the low permeability zones leading to increase in oil recovery. Bacillus licheniformis TT33, a hot water spring isolate, is facultatively anaerobic, halotolerant, and thermotolerant. It produces EPS as well as biosurfactant and has a biofilm-forming ability. The viscosity of its cell-free supernatant is $120\;mPa{\cdot}s$ at $28^{\circ}C$. Its purified EPS contained 26% carbohydrate and 3% protein. Its biosurfactant reduced the surface tension of water from 72 to 34 mN/m. This strain gave $27.7{\pm}3.5%$ oil recovery in a sand pack column. Environmental scanning electron microscopy analysis showed bacterial growth and biofilm formation in the sand pack. Biochemical tests and Amplified Ribosomal DNA Restriction Analysis confirmed that the oil recovery obtained in the sand pack column was due to Bacillus licheniformis TT33.

  • In previous studies, heat shock has been reported to induce the apoptosis or programmed cell death through the activation of caspase-3. 1 investigated the effect of juniper pure essential oil on the heat shock-induced apoptosis in human astrocyte cell line CCF-STTGI. Treatment of the astrocytes with heat shock markedly induced apoptotic cell death. However, pretreatment of the astrocytes with juniper oil ingibited the heat shock-induced apoptosis. To determine whether juniper inhibits the heat shock-induced activation of these apoptotic proteases, activation of CPP32 was assessed by Western blotting. Consistent with flow cytometry. DNA fragmentation and giemsa staining, heat shock-induced activation of CPP32 was blocked by juniper oil. Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), cysteine protease substrates were fragmented as a consequence of apoptosis by heat shock. Juniper oil inhibited the PARP fragmentation. This juniper oil also inhibited the heat shock-induced activation of caspase-3. These results suggest that juniper oil may modulate the apoptosis through the activation of the interleukin-1-converting enzyme-like protease.

  • An efficiency of a refrigeration cycle and a reliability of a compressor can be reduced if a refrigerant including excessive lubricating oil is exhausted from the compressor. Thus, the analysis of the oil behavior inside the compressor is required to prevent the problem. A tested rotary compressor with visualization windows has been manufactured in this study to investigate the oil behavior using developed visualization techniques. The oil behaviors at various operating conditions have been quantified to obtain the relationship with the outlet pressure inside the compressor. Also, the effect of the operating conditions on the quantity of the exhausted oil from the rotary compressor has been investigated using a manufactured test model.

  • Currently government certified test method for an automobile remanufactured products is insufficient. Thus many automotive parts in the remanufacturing market are lacking proper evaluation criteria and production of defective products are causing customer dissatisfaction. In this paper a power steering oil pump, which requires stringent manufacturing standards, is studied by the failure mode and effect analysis approach. The research suggested that the test criteria such as discharge flow characteristic test, tightness test, pulley run-out test, pressure switch operation test, low temperature test and rotation pressure durability test should be performed to evaluate the reliability of remanufactured power steering oil pumps. As a result of tests, the performance of remanufactured power steering oil pump satisfied the evaluation criteria of pressure switch operation test and low temperature test. However, the remanufactured power steering oil pump failed to satisfy the evaluation criteria on discharge performance test, tightness test and pulley run-out test. These performance evaluation tests proved the necessity of standard process for the remanufactured power steering oil pump.

  • The Electrical Charge generated by friction in flowing insulating oil can create hazadous accidents. Neutralization of static charges in the oil during transportation is an obvious method of overcoming the problem of internal electric charge. It is known that SCR(Static Charge Reducer) can neutralize much of this charge by the needle electrode and mixing it with the original charge. In our experiment, a filter to generate static charge was set just befor a measurement pipe, and streaming current from the filter to the earth $I_s$, current from the electrode to the earth $I_e$ and current from the receiving tank to the earth $I_f$ were measured in a steady state. As a result, charge density and needle electrode current increases with increasing of oil temperature. Charge elimination rate decreases with increasing of oil flow rate, and increases with increases of oil temperature. Faraday Cage current decreases with increasing of oil temperature.
