The interaction of contained oil slicks with current was investigated with a two-dimensional experimental setup in the circulating water channel facility. A vertical plate was used to contain the oils against the currents and the evolution of the oil slick, mainly focusing on the water/oil interface, was examined with an aid of a laser sheet. Two different oils - soy bean oil and diesel oil - were studied with varying the current speed (10 cm/sec to 35 cm/sec), the barrier depth (4 cm and 8 cm) and the volume of oil (2 liter to 12 liter). Different types of the interface behavior were observed according to the conditions and their mechanism was discussed based basically on the dimensional analysis. The critical speeds of two types of oil loss mechanism (entrainment failure and drainage failure) were also examined.

This research was performed to determine the oil separation characteristics of the specially designed oil filter installed in a PCV cylinder head passage. The oil filter was specially designed with fleece for separating oil mist from blow-by gas. The fleece, made of fiber fabric material, is placed in the oil filter case to absorb oil mist with a small pressure drop during blow-by gas through the filter. To do this, 3-D CFD analysis was simulated for the simplified PCV system with the oil filter using the commercial code, Ansys CFX. Results showed that the oil filter's efficiency with fleece sharply increased as oil droplet size increased.
Four Holstein cows were used in a 4 ${\times}$ 4 Latin square experiment to study effects of fat sources on rumen metabolism and digestibility of nutrients. All cows were fed a total mixed diets containing 60% silage and 40% concentrate. The four concentrates were formulated to contain either Megalac(MEG), formaldehyde-treated whole linseed(LIN), a mixture (50 : 50, oil basis) of fish oil and formaldehyde-treated whole linseed(MIX), or no fat source in the concentrate but 500g per day of linseed oil being infused into the duodemm (OIL). The rumen pH was lowest in OIL among the treatments(P < 0.05), but ammonia N concentration in the rumen was not significantly different among the treatments. The differences of total VFA, acetate, propionate, iso-butyrate and iso-valerate concentrations were not significant among the treatments. While, butyrate and valerate were highest in OIL and lowest in MEG(P < 0.05 and P <0.01, respectively). In addition, A:P ratio was also highest in OIL and lowest in MEG(P < 0.05). As expected, intake of nutrients(DM, OM, NDF and ADF) was lowest in OIL among the treatments(P < 0.01). However, all nutrients flow to the duodenum, and digestion in the rumen and total tract were not significantly different among the treatments. Intake of N was highest in MEG, but lowest in OIL treatment(P < 0.01). Duodenal flow of total N, nonammonia N and microbial N was not significantly different across the treatments. In addition, microbial synthesis and ammonia N and total N digestibility were not affected by different dietary fat sources. The present results show that fermentative characteristic and microbial efficiency in the rumen, and nutrients digestibility in the rumen and total tract were not depressed by supplementation of as much as 6% dietary fat sources.

This study suggests a new type flow control logic valve which have grooves on the main poppet valve. The grooves connect oil supply port to pilot chamber and the oil passages made by the grooves are designed to vary in proportion to the displacement of the main poppet valve. From analytical formulations on the hydraulic circuit including the flow control valve, equations on the characteristics of the valve were obtained. In the experiment, the relationships between valve displacement and flow rate to the load side, and the variations of flow rate to the load side according to the variation of load pressure were investigated. From the experimental and numerical results, it was ascertained that the flow control valve designed in this study had excellent characteristics on proportional control and remote control.
A wind power heat generation system that converts wind power directly to heat instead of electric power is considered in this study. The system consists of a wind turbine part and a heat generation part. The heat generation part is materialized by a hydraulic system including a hydraulic pump, a flow control valve, a hydraulic oil tank, etc. The flow control valve primarily converts hydraulic energy generated in the pump to heat energy. It should have a function of overspeed protection under excessive wind speeds. In this study, a novel flow control valve design is proposed for excellent flow control characteristics under excessive pump driving torque (excessive wind speed). The performance of the suggested valve is analyzed using numerical simulation.

The hydraulic LSD which uses the principle of gear pump is packed with viscous oil in tight container. When a slip occurs on one wheel, the hydraulic LSD generates torque caused by high oil pressure in the container. In this study, two dimensional(2-D) side pinion gear model was developed for hydraulic LSD. Using that model the flow analysis was conducted to preestimate pressure distributions of the side pinion gear according to the variations in the design factors such as oil viscosity, gear gap and rpm. Then, applying the obtained pressure distributions on the side pinion gear, finite element analysis was conducted to evaluate the torque characteristics. From the analysis results, the torque characteristics according to the design factor variations were evaluated.

This paper describes the fluttering characteristics of the upper pad in a tilting pad journal bearing(6-pad, LOP type) using a steam turbine. In order to investigate the phenomena of the upper pad fluttering experimentally, the absolute vibration of the upper pads the relative vibration between bearing and shaft and the circumferential distribution of the film thickness are measured under the different values of supply oil flow rate, shaft speed and bearing load. It can be known that the fluttering mechanism of the upper pads has a tendency of the self-excited vibration from the study of fluttering frequencies and amplitudes with the change of shaft speed. furthermore, it is observed that the incipient upper pad fluttering velocity is increased by the increase of oil supply flow rate and fluttering amplitude of the upper pads is increased by the decrease of the oil flow rate and by the increase of the bearing load.

Sealing an oil-air mixture plays important roles to have an enhanced lubrication for high speed spindle. Current work is emphasized on the investigation of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve the sealing capability of conventional labyrinth seal, air jet is injected against through the leakage flow. It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. In this study, both of a numerical analysis by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement. Both of the turbulence and the compressible flow model are introduced in CFD analysis. The sealing effect of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude are studied for various parameter in the experiment. The results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient. Effects of sealing improvement are explained as decreasing of effective leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger.

The vibration characteristics of the pad fluttering in a fluid film tilting pad journal bearing (4-pad LBP) have been investigated experimentally under the different values of oil supply flow rate, bearing load and shaft speed. The vibration characteristics of the pad fluttering are estimated by measuring the time signal of circumferential distribution of the film thickness and the cascade plot of the response of the relative displacement between the bearing and the shaft. It is shown that the vibration frequency of the pad fluttering has a sub-synchronous frequency and almost does not change by the increase of shaft speed. However the vibration amplitude is increased by the increase of shaft speed. From those experimental results, pad fluttering can be thought of as a self-excited vibration. The incipient pad fluttering velocity is increased by the increase of oil supply flow rate and by the decrease of bearing load. It is observed that the vibration amplitude of the pad fluttering can be decrease by the control of supply oil flow rate effectively. And also It is known that the outbreak of pad fluttering does not concern with the shaft vibration.
