  • Peanut seeds are characterized by high oils and proteins with good quality, and are utilized as an edible oil source and a protein-rich food products. The end products, being peanut butter, salted seed, confections, roasting stock and other by-products are favored in world-wide because of their unique roasted peanut flavor. As with many other foods, interest in the composition and chemistry of peanut is largely a result of thier use as human food. Thus, a more complete knowledge of thier chemical and food quality and flavor properties is desired. Literatures are reviewed mainly focucing on the physicochemical properties and nutritional quality of oil, protein and flavor in peanuts. Chemical properties of protein and oil, and volatile flavor component in peanut seeds are studied extensively in view point of chemical and food nutritional value. But in crop base, the synthesis and genetic studies of the chemicals could not provide valuable informations on the breeding for quality improvement. Some essential amino acids are limiting in peanut seeds and the tocopherols are very important in oil stability and for dietary adequacy ratio in high linoleic acid peanut oil, but it is thought to be quite difficult to improve by breeding technique as their lack information of gene actions. However, the selections of high protein and oil, and some essential amino acids and linoleic acid rich genotypes could be helpful for the quality improving. Research studies are also needed to elucidate the relationships between flavor components and consumer perception of peanut flavor.

  • As oil palm trees are an important economic source in many countries, particularly in Southeast Asia and Africa, the study of Ganoderma boninense is crucial for the sustainability of the oil palm industry. This study aims to understand the biology and ecology of the fungus, its pathogenesis, and the impact it has on oil palm trees. This knowledge can be used to develop management strategies to mitigate the damage caused by the fungus, such as the use of resistant varieties, chemical and biological control methods, and cultural practices. This study is to ensure the long-term productivity and sustainability of the oil palm industry. The main method of recent academic studies on this pathogen is molecular biology, with a focus on genetic analysis and functional genomics. Researchers have used techniques such as PCR, DNA sequencing, and transcriptomics to identify genes and pathways involved in pathogenesis and better understand the fungus's interactions with its host plant. Other methods used in recent studies include biochemical analysis, microscopy, and phytohormonal assays to investigate the biochemistry and physiology of the interaction between G. boninense and oil palm. This study is intended to provide implications from a new perspective by organizing and integrating studies on Ganoderma boninense.

  • This study evaluated the supplemental effects of linseed oil (LO) as a substitute for docosahexaenoic acid oil (DHAO) in the diet of juvenile Atlantic bluefin tuna. A control diet (DHA) was formulated to contain 65% enzyme-treated fish meal and 3% of DHAO. A LO diet was formulated to contain 1% LO replacing 1% DHAO in DHA diet. In a feeding trial, 300 juvenile bluefin tuna (initial body weight 1.15 g) were randomly divided into two concrete tanks (70 ton capacity) and fed one of the experimental diets for 13 days. Weight gain was higher in the LO group (519%) than in the control (443%) while survival and protein digestibility were similar between groups. The biological assessment of the tuna digestive organs did not differ between the DHA and LO groups. The fatty acid composition of the carcass showed that α-linolenic acid was only observed in the LO group, and there was no difference in the composition of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosapentaenoic acid between the groups. These results indicate that LO could be a dietary good oil source for Atlantic bluefin tuna without apparent negative effects.

  • Twenty college women were led experimental diet which composed ot basal diet plus different kinds of dietary rats at 27% Cal. Equal amount of 13.5g of corn oil, perilla oil or fish oil was supplied for 2 weeks as a source of n6 linoleic acid(LA). n3 $\alpha$-linolenic acid (LL). or n3 EPA + DHA. respectively. Plasma total Chol level was reduced by perilla and fish oils, significantly only by fish oil. Plasma Chol level was rather increased by corn oil(P<0.05), but was decreased by double amount of corn oil supplement. Therefore, hypocholesterolemic effect of fatty acids was in the order of n3 EPA+DHA>n3 LL>n6 LA and influenced by the degree of fat unsaturation. Plasma TG level was also significantly decreased by n3 EPA+ DHA and increased by n6 LA. Hypotriglyceridemic effect of fatty acids was also in the order of n3 EPA + DHA> n3 LL>n6 LA and influenced by the unsaturation. However, the reduction of plasma TG was more influenced by the fatty acid structure rather than the fat unsaturation. There were no significant effects on lipoprotein pattern 3nd chemical compositions of lipoprotein by different dietary PUFAs. but fish oil diet significantly increased the relative proportion of HDL-Chol. In conclusion. cholesterol- lowering effect of dietary PUFAS seemed to be a function of total fat unsaturation but hypotriglyceridemic effect seemed to be more linked to the ratty acid structure rather than the degree of unsaturation. The hypolipidemic effect of n3 PUFAs was significant so that fish oil or perilla oil may have important nutritional applications in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic disease.

DAF와 펜톤 산화 실험을 수행한 결과 7분내에 TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon)와 COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand) 농도가 각각 1.5mg/L와 40.0mg/L 이하로 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 펜톤 산화 반응으로 인하여 슬러지 농도가 약 5배 가량 증가하여 후단에 침전조를 설치하는 것이 바람직하다.

  • As a part of the studies on effective utilization of polyunsaturated lipids in sardine (Sardinops melanosticta), when the refined sardine oil was mixed with soybean and other vegetable oils storage stability and the effect to the quality of the product was investigated. Addition of 1 volume of refined sardine oil to 4 volumes of soybean oil was recommended to yield 3 in P/S ratio and 1.5g of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid per 40g of the mixed oil for a good storage stability and as a dietary source of EPA requirement for atherosclerotic disease. When the unpurified vegetable oils, sesame oil and perilla oil, were mixed with the same volume of refined sardine oil the content of n-3 fatty acids was increased to $13.36\%\;and\;30.65\%\;%\;from\;0.27\%$ in sesame oil and $29.72\%$ in perilla oil. The n-3/n-6 ratios were also raised to 0.476 and 1.433 from 0.006 and 0.876. And these mixed oils were more stabilized than the refined sardine oil during storage at $30^{\circ}C$.

  • Eucalyptus oil is a rich source of bioactive compounds with a variety of biological activities and is widely used in traditional medicine. Eucalyptus citriodora is cultivated for the production of essential oils. However, the mode of antibacterial action of essential oils from E. citriodora is not well-known. This study aimed to determine the chemical components, microbial inhibitory effect, and mechanism of action of the essential oil from E. citriodora. The oil was extracted from E. citriodora leaves by hydro-distillation and the chemical components were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The antibacterial activities of eucalyptus oil against gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus intermedius) and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were screened by disc diffusion method and quantitative analysis was conducted by the microdilution method. The mechanism of action of the extracted essential oil was observed using SEM and analyzed by SDS-PAGE. The major components of E. citriodora oil were citronellal (60.55 ± 0.07%), followed by dl-isopulegol (10.57 ± 0.02%) and citronellol (9.04 ± 0.03%). The antibacterial screening indicated that E. citriodora oil exhibited prominent activity against all tested strains. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) against B. subtilis were 0.5% and 1.0%, respectively. The MIC and MBC concentrations against S. aureus, S. intermedius, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa were 1% and 2%, respectively. As observed by SEM, the antibacterial mechanism of E. citriodora oil involved cell wall damage; SDS-PAGE revealed decrease in protein bands compared to untreated bacteria. Thus, E. citriodora oil showed significant antimicrobial properties and caused cellular damage.

  • This study investigated changes in gene expression by dietary fat source, i.e., beef tallow, soybean oil, olive oil, and coconut oil (each 3% in feed), in both male and female growing-finishing pigs. Real-time PCR was conducted on seven genes (insulin receptor; INSR, insulin receptor substrate; IRS, phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-triphosphate; PIP3, 3-phosphoinositide-dependent protein kinase-1; PDK1, protein kinase B; Akt, forkhead box protein O1; FOXO1 and cGMP-inhibited 3', 5'-cyclic phosphodiesterase; PDE3) located upstream of the insulin signaling pathway in the longissimus dorsi muscle (LM) of pigs. The INSR, IRS, PIP3, and PDE3 genes showed significantly differential expression in barrow pigs. Expression of the PIP3 and FOXO1 genes was significantly different among the four dietary groups in gilt pigs. In particular, the PIP3 gene showed the opposite expression pattern between barrow and gilt pigs. These results show that dietary fat source affected patterns of gene expression according to animal gender. Further, the results indicate that the type of dietary fat affects insulin signaling-related gene expression in the LM of pigs. These results can be applied to livestock production by promoting the use of discriminatory feed supplies.
