The lubrication characteristics of line contacts between the vane and cam ring in an oil hydraulic vane pump with intravanes have been investigated. Variations of the radial acting force of a vane were calculated from previously measured results of dynamic internal pressures in four chambers surrounding a vane, and variations of the film thickness were estimated in both the rotational speed range from 500 to 1500 rpm and in the delivery pressure range from 1 to 14 MPa. The results indicate the variations of the radial acting force and film thickness. It is found that the regimes of lubrication in the vane tip contacts lover rigid-isoviscous to rigidvariable viscosities.
This paper presents the contact pressure distribution of pin bushing bearings for various lubrication friction modes such as oil film and elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts, a mixed lubrication contact, a boundary contact, and a dry contact. During a sliding contact of a plain bearing, the boundary and dry rubbing contacts are dominated between a piston pin and a pin bushing bearing. This may come from a micro-scale clearance, an explosive impact pressures from the piston head, and an oscillatory motion of a pin bearing. The computed results show that as the oil film parameter $h/{\sigma}$ is increased from the dry rubbing contact to the oil film lubrication friction, the maximum oil film pressure is radically increased due to an increased viscous friction with a thin oil film thickness and the maximum asperity contact pressure is reduced due to a decreased asperity contact of the rubbing surfaces.
The piston of a marine diesel engine works under severe conditions, including a combustion pressure of over 180 bar, high thermal load, and high speed. Therefore, the analyses of the fatigue strength, thermal load, clamping (bolting) system and lubrication performance are important in achieving a robust piston design. Designing the surface profile and the skirt ovality carefully is important to prevent severe wear and reduce frictional loss for engine efficiency. This study performs flexible multi-body dynamic and elasto-hydrodynamic (EHD) analyses using AVL/EXCITE/PU are performed to evaluate tribological characteristics. The numerical techniques employed to perform the EHD analysis are as follows: (1) averaged Reynolds equation considering the surface roughness; (2) Greenwood_Tripp model considering the solid_to_solid contact using the statistical values of the summit roughness; and (3) flow factor considering the surface topology. This study also compares two cases of skirt shapes with minimum oil film thickness, peak oil film pressure, asperity contact pressure, wear rate using the Archard model and friction power loss (i.e., frictional loss mean effective pressure (FMEP)). Accordingly, the study compares the calculated wear pattern with the field test result of the piston operating for 12,000h to verify the quantitative integrity of the numerical analysis. The results show that the selected profile and the piston skirt ovality reduce friction power loss and peak oil film pressure by 7% and 57%, respectively. They also increase the minimum oil film thickness by 34%.
Abstract: In the oil hydraulic piston pumps the clearance between the valve plate and cylinder block plays an important role for volumetric and overall efficiency. Thus, adequate lubricational fluid film is needed for the interface. In this study, fluid film thickness is measured by a gap sensor and a slip ring under operational conditions to observe the behavior of the lubrication mechanism in detail. To investigate the effect according to the valve plate types in view of the fluid film, three different types were designed. Leakage flow rate and shaft torque were also measured to clarify the effect according to the valve plate types. A broad range of experiments were conducted to provide reasonable data on the effect of fluid film. In this experiments two main parameters were found, of which the one is the discharge pressure and the other is valve plate geometry. As a result, we found that the spherical valve plate could get more stable fluid film thickness, maintain good efficiency for high pressure range than the other types.

The operation of proceeding bearing in the conditions of misaligned axis of proceeding and bush leads to the load concentration on the bearing edges causing further mixed lubrication conditions, unstable operation and intensive wear of mating parts. For the design process of proceeding bearing the knowledge of static characteristics determined from the oil film pressure and temperature distribution is very important. For the 3-lobe proceeding bearing, the pressure, temperature and viscosity fields, load capacity, minimum oil film thickness, power loss, oil flow and maximum oil film temperature have been determined by iterative solution of the Reynolds', energy and viscosity equations. The paper introduces the results of theoretical investigations of static characteristics of 3-lobe proceeding bearing operating at misaligned axis of proceeding and bush. An effect of misalignment ratio, length to diameter ratio of the proceeding bearing, the lobe clearance ratio on the static characteristics was investigated. Laminar, adiabatic model of oil film for the solution of Reynolds, energy and viscosity equations was applied.
The electric controlled marine diesel engine has fuel pump generating the high pressurized fuel for fuel injection to combustion chamber via a common rail. Fuel pump consists of a cam-roller system. Journal bearing installed between a roller and a cam-roller pin is subjected to fluctuating heavy and instant loads by cam lift. First, Kinematic analysis is carried out to predict bearing loads during one cycle acting on the journal bearing. Second, flexible multi-body dynamic analysis and transient elasto-hydrodynamic(EHD) lubrication analysis for journal bearing considering elastic deformation of cam-roller pin, roller and bearing are conducted using AVL EXCITE/PU software to predict lubrication performance. The clearance ratio and journal groove shape providing lubrication oil are important parameter in bearing design having good performance and can be changed easier than other design parameters such as diameter, width, oil supply pressure and bearing material grade. Generally, journal bearing performance is represented by the minimum oil film thickness(MOFT) and peak oil film pressure(POFP). As well as the traditional design parameters(MOFT, POFP), in this study, temperature rise of lubrication oil is also evaluated through the side leakage flow of supplied oil. By the evaluating MOFT, POFP and temperature rise, the optimum bearing clearance ratio is decided.
The surface roughness between a piston ring pack and a cylinder liner directly affects the fuel economy, the oil consumption, and the emission of the engine so that it is very important to clarify the surface roughness effects on the lubrication characteristics. The friction characteristics of the piston ring during engine operations are known to as mixed lubrication experimentally. In this study to simulate the effects of the surface roughness of the piston ring pack on the lubrication characteristics, the mixed lubrication analysis of piston rings was performed using the simplified average Reynolds equation. From the results the surface roughness was found be considerably affects minimum oil film thickness as well as FMEP(Friction Mean Effective Pressure). Especially, the oil ring was the most sensitive on the surface roughness.
It is very important to estimate static squeezing pressure distributions for lining material of sterntube after bearing at dry dock stage since the maximum squeezing pressure value can be one of the significant characteristics representing coming navigation performances of the propulsion system. Moderate oil film pressure between lining material and propulsion shaft is also essential for safe ship service. In this paper, Hertz contact theory is explained to derive static squeezing pressure. Reynolds equation simplified from Navier-Stokes equation is centrally differentiated to numerically obtain dynamic oil film pressures. New shaft alignment technology of nonlinear elastic multi-support bearing elements is also used in order to obtain external forces acting on lining material of bearing. For 300K DWT class VLCC with synthetic bush of sterntube after bearing, static squeezing pressures are calculated using derived external forces and Hertz contact theory. Optimum partial slope of the after bush is presented by parametric shaft alignment analyses. Dynamic oil film pressures are comparatively evaluated for partially bored and unbored after bush. Finally it is proved that the partial slope can drastically reduce oil film pressure during engine running.

A regression formula including the inlet film thickness as the parameter for the starvation factor in EHL condition is obtained by numerical analysis with Elord‘s cavitation algorithm. In addition, an apparatus for starved film thickness measurement by use of the white light interferometry is developed in order to verify the proposed regression formula. From observation results by this apparatus, the proposed regression formula can predict the reduction of central film thickness caused by starvation in a ball-plate contact with an uncertainty up to 10%
In this study, we perform a numerical analysis to predict the film thickness and lubrication regions for a thrust ball bearing under different operating conditions. Film thinning and replenishment affect the film thickness in starved lubrication. As the inlet meniscus position is brought to the edge of the Hertz contact, the thin film thickness is calculated as starved equation. We use a film replenishment model to determine the recovery film thickness between rolling elements. We use a hydrodynamic model to describe film recovery, that results from the effects of surface tension. In this model, we consider the surface tension gradient in fluid depression as the driving force for fluid recovery. We use Fourier transform method to determine the time-dependent depth of depressed oil. We calculate the change in the central film thickness graphically by using the recovery equation in starved elastohydrodynamic lubrication(EHL) under operating conditions that include numbers of balls, sliding velocity, applied force, and ambient film thickness. We evaluate the degree of starvation by using the distance from the center of the contact area to the meniscus position. Parched lubrication, a phenomenon where the film thickness decreases consistently, occurs at the severe condition. We determine optimal values with respect to the numbers of balls, and sliding velocity. The investigation can contribute to the design operating conditions for proper lubrication.
