This study analyzed the offshore plant industry and related regulations such as ISO, IEC, and Norsok Standards to develop an integrated network management system (INMS) capable of both on-site and remote management and configuration of IP-based network equipment in offshore plants. The INMS was designed based on actual specifications and POS plans, and a plan of management was verified through an offshore plant engineering company. Various modules such as PAGA interface modules, CCTV, IP-PBX, and HF-radio communication modules were developed for system implementation. Protocol and data design and screen design were followed by framework development and introduction of the automatic satellite communication function.

An offshore(submarine) cable has been used for more than a century, however it has been used mainly for communication or power supply to near-shore island. Therefore, offshore cable has not been got more attention than other types of cable and the related standards have also not been established well. However wind farms have been shifting from land to offshore because of better wind condition. Consequently, it has been pushing up demand for offshore cable. Hence, this paper introduces the trend of offshore cable industry and related standards or recommendations only focusing on offshore wind farm. In details, the installed offshore cables in offshore wind farms, the main offshore cable makers and up to date technologies are covered. In addition, the related standards or recommendations are also analyzed and compared each other.

In this paper, we analyzed underwater multiple sensors acoustic communication technologies for monitoring and control of offshore plants in underwater environments. Information on underwater structure of offshore plants is transmitted and received by multiple sensors at the same time. Using multiple sensors with same frequency, we employed spread spectrum techniques to avoid interferences between these multiple sensors. Owing to the multi-path characteristic in underwater communications, the performance is degraded. In order to improve the performance of underwater multiple sensors communication, we proposed turbo equalized RAKE receiver structures. Assuming that the number of sensors is fixed to three, we conformed the effectiveness of the proposed method as compared to the conventional one.

In this paper, TCP/IP based Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication uses CDMA/GSM network for data communication. This communication method is widely used by offshore moored buoy for data transmission back to the system server. Due to weather and signal coverage, the TCP/IP M2M communication often experiences transmission failure and causing data losses in the server. Data losses are undesired especially for meteorological and oceanographic analysis. This paper discusses a software approach to minimize M2M data losses by handling transmission failure and re-attempt which meant to transmit the data for recovery. This implementation was tested for its performance on a meteorological buoy placed offshore.

The wind power generation is an eco-friendly clean energy that produces almost zero $CO_2$ emission, and has a good economic feasibility. As for the location, the installation of large turbines and construction of large-scale wind farm is easier on the offshore than on the land. In Korea, it is inevitable to generate offshore wind power through the offshore wind farm, and the radio interference of larger wind power generators and offshore wind power farm to broadcasting, communication and radars is becoming a core issue for constructing the offshore wind farm. In this study, the wind power generation status and rotor blade technology trend were presented, along with the technical trend of radar radio interference reduction relating to construction of the offshore wind farm.

With the increasing of the penetration rate of large-scale wind farms, a reliable, highly available and cost-effective communication network is needed. As the failure of a WF communication network will significantly impact the control and real-time monitoring of wind turbines, network reliability should be considered into the WF design process. This paper analyzes the network reliability of different WF configurations for the Southwest Offshore project that is located in Korea. The WF consists of 20 WTs with a total capacity of 60 MW. In this paper, the performance is compared according to a variety of indices such as network unavailability, mean downtime and network cost. To increase the network reliability, partial protection and full protection were investigated as strategies that can overcome the impact of a single point of failure. Furthermore, the reliability performances of different network architectures are analyzed, evaluated and compared.

In recent, the communication networks of wind power farm are becoming crucial technologies for monitoring and controlling the large-scale offshore wind power farm. In this paper, EPON based communication network architectures are proposed in order to combat the problems of conventional Ethernet based communication network such as delay, data processing overhead and the fairness of data transmission among turbines in offshore wind power farm. The proposed architecture constructs the point to multi-point network by using OLT and ONUs installed in central control center and wind turbines respectively. The EPON based communication network architecture has low cost, high reliability, and fair transmission capability. To evaluate the performance of proposed architectures, the wind power farm based on IEC 61850 is modelled by using OPNET The simulation results are analyzed and compared with conventional Ethernet based communication network in terms of the overhead, delay and fairness of data transmission.

Recently, the offshore plant has been revived by rise in oil prices and energy consumption. Due to the external environmental impact, the ballast system is essential for an offshore plant. The ballast system for the existing offshore plant, consist of pump 6EA and Ballast tank 4EA, is performed by the tilt control. However, this system is vulnerable to a failure due to the fact that a lot of equipment needs to be installed within the system. In this paper, a new concept of ballast system and the control algorithm based on IT is proposed. Simulator has been created to test the proposed system and algorithm, and as a result, it has proven that it is controlled stably.
The energy production of offshore wind farms plays an important role in expanding renewable energy. However, the development of offshore wind farms faces many challenges due to its incompatibility with marine environments and its social acceptability among the local community. In this study, we reviewed the marine environmental impact assessment status of offshore wind farm development projects for 2012-2019 in South Korea. A total of nine projects were selected for this study, all of which experienced considerable conflict with local fisheries resources. To appropriately respond to the underlying challenges faced by offshore wind farm development and in order to better support decision-making for future impact assessment, our findings identified: i) a need for adequate preliminary investigation and technical examination of fisheries resources; ii) a need to assess and estimate the impact of underwater noise, vibration, and electromagnetic waves on fisheries resources during wind farm construction and operation; and iii) a need for a bottom-up approach that allows for communication with local stakeholders and policy-makers to guarantee the local acceptability of the development.

The safety of marine construction workers and marine pollution problems are occurring due to large-scale offshore construction. In particular, underwater construction work in the sea has a higher risk than other work, so it is necessary to apply an unmanned alternative system that considers the safety of the workers. In this paper, the ROV system for offshore construction has been developed for underwater unmanned work. A monitoring system was developed for position control through the control of underwater propellants, pneumatic gripper, and monitoring of underwater work. As a result of the performance evaluation, the underwater movement speed of the ROV was evaluated to be 0.89 m/s, and it was confirmed that the maximum load of the pneumatic gripper was 80 kg. In addition, the network bandwidth required for underwater ROV control and underwater video streaming was evaluated to be more than 300Mbps, wired communication at 92.7 ~ 95.0Mbit/s at 205m, and wireless communication at 78.3 ~ 84.8Mbit/s.
