DESIGN ANALYSIS OF OFFSET STRIP FIN HEAT EXCHANGER

  • The characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop in an offset strip fin heat exchanger was studied with a steady-state three dimensional numerical model. Flow Reynolds number $Re_{dh}$ ranged from 10 to 3500 and Prandtl number Pr ranged from 0.7 to 50. The dimensionless performance factors, i.e. 'the pumping power factor F' and 'the heat transfer performance factor J' were analyzed and obtained a relationship between them. Finally, the prediction of F and J factors was generalized for different Prandtl numbers.

  • In this study, thermal performance of recuperators with plain and offset strip fins is investigated to enhance the thermal efficiency of a micro gas turbine. Thermal cycle analysis is conducted to determine major design parameters of a single-pass counterflow recuperator. In order to evaluate the performance of the recuperator, the effectiveness and the pressure drop in the recuperators are chosen as the objective function and the design constraint, respectively. The optimized geometries for internal structure of the recuperators with plain and offset strip fins are obtained with varying the fin spacing and height. From the result, the recuperator with offset strip fins has better thermal performance when the fin spacing, s, is smaller than 1.45mm and the thermal performance of the recuperator with plain rectangular fins is higher than that with offset strip fins in the region of $s{\geq}1.45mm$. In addition, it is found that the entrance region effect and the longitudinal wall heat conduction effect should be taken into account for accurately predicting the thermal performance of the recuperators with both plain and offset strip fins.

  • This work discusses the pressure droop, heat and mass transfer of the finned-tube heat exchangers having 7 mm tubes and offset strips in dehumidifying applications. It focuses on the fin material saving and the reduction of pressure drop. The experiment was conducted using three times scaled-up models to simulate the performance of the prototype. Eight kinds of fins having different strips and S shape edges were tested. the area density of the strip was a major factor and its shape and the location were secondary factors on the pressure drop, the heat and mass transfer. The reduced-area fin can almost equal the non-reduced fin in the aspect of heat and mass transfer. The strip fins proposed in the present work can considerably reduce both the pressure drop and the fin material for similar thermal load.

  • This paper numerically investigates thermo-flow characteristics of offset strip fins to obtain a correlation of heat transfer and pressure drop. The flow is divided into three regimes, i.e. laminar, transition and turbulent. The predicted j and f values from the SST k-w turbulence model agree with previous correlations with the error less than 20% in transition and turbulent regimes. Prandtl number is varied from 0.5 to 40 and a correlation to predict heat transfer and pressure drop for offset strip fins is suggested.

  • Conjugate heat transfer of an automotive oil cooler with offset-strip fins was numerically investigated to predict the performance of the oil cooler for various flow-rates. The simulations were conducted by directly modeling offset-strip fins with unstructured meshes. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were used for the present simulations. Heat transfer characteristics of the oil cooler was compared well with experimental results and the errors were approximately within 5 percents. It was found that the performance of the oil cooler increased as the flow-rate increased up to the flow-rate of 12 L/min, but the performance seemed to be saturated beyond a critical flow-rate, which was estimated as 15 L/min. Furthermore, it was confirmed that compared to the performance without fins, that of the oil cooler with offset-strip fins was increased by about 75 percents.

  • A numerical study of thermo-flow characteristics is presented to determine correlations of pressure drop and heat transfer for offset-strip fins. As a blockage ratio increased, previous correlations underestimate f values in laminar and turbulent regimes, and overestimate j values in laminar regime. Therefore, new correlations, which are applicable to fins with blockage ratios more than 15%, are presented.

  • Intercoolers for multi-stage turbocharger of the hydrogen reciprocating engine for HALE UAV are installed for reducing the charged air inlet temperature of the engine. The intercooler is air to air, cross flow, plate-fin type and the fin configuration is offset-strip fin which is referenced from the heat exchanger of the ERAST. Most of HALE UAV's cruising altitude is 60,000 ft and the density of air for this altitude is very low compared to sea level. Therefore the required heat transfer area for the HALE UAV is about three-times bigger than the sea level. Consequently, it is essential to design to meet the required efficiency of intercooler in the range of not excessively growing the weight of the heat exchanger. The quasi-one dimensional heat transfer design/analysis for satisfying the requirement of the engine are written in this paper. The numerical analyses for estimating the coolant flow rate of the engine bay and pressure loss in the header and core are also summarized.

  • 본 연구에서는 가스 터빈의 효율을 증대시키는데 사용되는 리큐퍼레이터의 성능에 대한 실험적 연구를 수행하였다. 본 연구에서 채택한 리큐퍼레이터는 오프셋 스트립 휜을 가지는 대항류 열교환기이다. 기존에 제시된 상관식 및 이상상태 사이클 해석을 통하여 최적화된 리큐퍼레이터의 형상을 결정하였다. 리큐퍼레이터의 성능을 평가하기 위해 실험연구를 수행하였다. 특히 리큐퍼레이터의 고온부 입구 온도를 변화시키면서 실험을 수행하였다. 또한 실험 결과를 기존에 제시되어 있던 상관식들과 비교를 하였다. 그 결과 압력강하는 실험결과와 상관식이 잘 맞지 않았지만 유용도는 실험결과와 상관식이 잘 일치하는 것을 확인하였다.
