  • Processing steps such as washing and cutting, involved in preparing fresh-cut produce causes tissue damage, leading to rapid quality deterioration. Major defects of fresh-cut produce are discoloration, softening, off-odor development, and microbial growth. Packaging of fresh-cut produce has been changed to reduce these quality problems. Flexible packaging film is widely used to pack fresh-cut produce. Vacuum packaging was the popular packaging method in the beginning of fresh-cut industry in Korea. Vacuum packaging creates high $CO_2$ and low $O_2$ levels to control browning of fresh-cut produce. However, these conditions induce some visual defects and off-odor development. Discoloration problem was also found when fresh-cut produce was packaged with conventional packaging film or plastic tray. Modified atmosphere (MA) packaging is effective for prolonging shelf-life of fresh-cut produce by decreasing $O_2$ and increasing $CO_2$ concentration in the package. Retail MA packaging using different oxygen transmission rate (OTR) film and micro-perforated film has started to be applied to fresh-cut produce in Korea. Proper MA package design that provides optimum range of $O_2$ and $CO_2$ partial pressures is one of the major challenges in the industry. An initial package flushing with $N_2$ or an low $O_2$/high $CO_2$ atmosphere is also used to more rapidly establish steady-state MA condition. Film OTR and $O_2$ flushing affects the fermentative volatile production, off-odor development, electrolyte leakage, discoloration, $CO_2$ injury, microbial population of fresh-cut produce. There is also a demand for convenient packaging to attract consumers. Rigid fresh-cut produce container for retail market has increased since the packaging provides excellent protection from physical damage during transport. Rigid tray used as actual serving vessel for the consumer is increasing in Korea. The tray with flexible lid to wrap or seal fresh-cut produce is more and more gaining popularity. Further practical technology to control quality change and microbial growth for each fresh-cut product has been studied since various fresh-cut items were required. The fresh-cut industry also focuses on searching for more convenient and environmentally friendly packaging.

  • Removal of decay heat from an operating reactor during a prolonged station blackout condition is a big concern for reactor designers, especially after the recent Fukushima accident. In the case of a prolonged station blackout condition, heat removal is possible only by passive means since no pumps or active systems are available. Keeping this in mind, the AHWR has been designed with many passive safety features. One of them is a passive means of removing decay heat with the help of Isolation Condensers (ICs) which are submerged in a big water pool called the Gravity Driven Water Pool (GDWP). The ICs have many tubes in which the steam, generated by the reactor core due to the decay heat, flows and condenses by rejecting the heat into the water pool. After condensation, the condensate falls back into the steam drum of the reactor. The GDWP tank holds a large amount of water, about 8000 $m^3$, which is located at a higher elevation than the steam drum of the reactor in order to promote natural circulation. Due to the recent Fukushima type accidents, it has been a concern to understand and evaluate the capability of the ICs to remove decay heat for a prolonged period without escalating fuel sheath temperature. In view of this, an analysis has been performed for decay heat removal characteristics over several days of an AHWR by ICs. The computer code RELAP5/MOD3.2 was used for this purpose. Results indicate that the ICs can remove the decay heat for more than 10 days without causing any bulk boiling in the GDWP. After that, decay heat can be removed for more than 40 days by boiling off the pool inventory. The pressure inside the containment does not exceed the design pressure even after 10 days by condensation of steam generated from the GDWP on the walls of containment and on the Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) tubes. If venting is carried out after this period, the decay heat can be removed for more than 50 days without exceeding the design limits.

  • In this study, new design method of prosthetic foot was suggested which can evaluate the performance of prosthetic foot by implementing amputee's gait simulation using the finite element analysis. The basic shape of ESPF(Energy Storing Prosthetic Foot) was designed which is suitable for the below-knee amputee considering mechanical properties and kinematic properties. And, the performance evaluations were performed using the Taguchi method with orthogonal array L25. As a result, average main effect of factors for the ESPF's performance were calculated and then optimum condition of given shape was selected. Essential particulars for the performance evaluation from the simulation result were the quantity of external work needed in stance phase, the quantity of transferred energy from the ESPF through the knee, and the vertical displacement of knee at toe-off. Reasonable optimum condition was obtained from the using performance index. From this study, it was found that it is necessary for the design of ESPF to consider the geometrical data related to the magnitude of load on elastic material.

  • The present paper deals with concept design of supersonic inlet based on compressible flow theory and flow control of bleeding in order to guarantee stability of supersonic inlet of ramjet engine in broad range of operating conditions. Shock instability, shock wave-boundary layer interaction and flow separation should be properly controlled to improve performance of the supersonic inlet. Considering shock strength, boundary layer and flow separation, the supersonic inlet is modified from the basic model which is designed under inviscid theory. Consequently, shock is stabilized, and required mass flow rate is obtained. Furthermore, bleeding is applied to the supersonic inlet to maintain performance in off-design conditions. Mass flow condition is adopted for modeling of bleeding effect, and performance of the supersonic inlet is evaluated by changing bleeding locations and numbers.

  • In this study, indoor thermal environment, resident behavior of operating cooling device, and thermal comfort vote are investigated at the living room of apartment during summertime in Seoul. Based on the results of the investigation, indoor air temperatures that residents turn air conditioners (especially for cooling load in this research) on and off were found out. The relationships between outdoor weather condition and the number of days using air conditioner, and whether operating patterns of the devices were also found out. The acceptable thermal comfort zone is figured out from these results, and this research is expected to contribute to the development of household air conditioner. The results can be summarized as the followings; Residents turned the air conditioner on at $29.76^{\circ}C$ of indoor air temperature, and $28.89^{\circ}C$ of $SET^\ast$. And turned the air conditioner off at $27.31^{\circ}C$ of indoor air temperature, and $23.70^{\circ}C$ $SET^\ast$. Therefore, acceptable thermal comfort zone could be lied between these temperatures. If comfortable indoor thermal environment can be obtained with various architectural passive cooling techniques based on the results, energy consumption of cooling devices will be reduced.

  • At the lift-off condition, the combustion and Jet noise of launch vehicle produces a severe acoustic environment and the acoustic loads may be damaging to paylaod and equipments. Prediction of the acoustic environment is thus needed to support the load-resistive design and test-qualification of components. Currently, such a high frequency problem is usually dealt with by using the SEA technique, for which the assumptions should match reasonably well with the vibro-acoustic condition of system. The subsystems of SEA model was composed of 16 flat plates, 8 L-shaped beams, and 2 acoustic cavities. The frequency range was 400 Hz - 4 kHz considering the modal parameter. The experiment was performed in a high intensity acoustic chamber, in which the diffuse acoustic field was assured. By comparing the SEA analysis and the experiments, the error less than 5 dB was observed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the installed performance of the PW206C turbo shaft engine used in the development of the smart UAV(Unmanned Ariel Vehicle) by KARI(Korean Aerospace Research Institute). It mainly aims to investigate performance behavior at installed conditions using both inlet and exhaust losses generated by CFD analysis of the ducts. The ways employed to be able to analyze the performance extensively were mainly rallied out by performing design point analysis of the engine where the performance simulation results from the commercial program 'GASTURB 9' used for simulation were used as inlet boundary condition for the ducts in CFD program The use of CFD tool involve modeling of the ducts to conform with the stipulated shape and sizes as defined by KARI with a grid density that allows reasonable flow characteristics applicable to aircraft components. Respective values of Shaft horse power obtained by varying flight Mach number, Gas generator RPM and Altitude considering several losses inclusive of those estimated by use of CFD tool were then plotted at three conditions with the ECS-OFF, ECS-MAX and at un-installed condition. Reasonable results were obtained as a result of using computational fluid dynamics that can hence be justified as an alternative tool for use in future flow analysis of engine and components.

  • In this paper, the analysis of the electric field in the chamber of high voltage $SF_6$ GCB(Gas Circuit Breaker) is presented by using C-1 FEM. For this purpose, pre-processing program and post-processing program were developed for axisymmetirc 3 dimensional analysis and the electric field in cylindric chamber was analyzed. Important problem is that electric analysis must be considered coronal due to break-down of $SF_6$ when it is cutted off. To solve this problem, a procedure is needed to verify that the solution of Poisson's equation for scalar potential satisfy charge continuos condition because of using first order element os not satisfy the electric continuous condition, C-1 FEM is introduce to obtain electirc potential and electric field at the same time. Analysis of the distribution of electric field on model was done. It is confirmed that the developed program in this paper applicable to design and to analyze of characteristics in total program as electric characteristics analysis routine.

  • In this paper, the well-conditioned observer for a stochastic system is designed so that the observer is less sensitive to the ill-conditioning factors in transient and steady-state observer performance. These factors include not only deterministic uncertainties such as unknown initial estimation error, round-off error, modeling error and sensing bias, but also stochastic uncertainties such as disturbance and sensor noise. In deterministic perspectives, a small value in the L$_{2}$ norm condition number of the observer eigenvector matrix guarantees robust estimation performance to the deterministic uncertainties. In stochastic viewpoints, the estimation variance represents the robustness to the stochastic uncertainties and its upper bound can be minimized by reducing the observer gain and increasing the decay rate. Both deterministic and stochastic issues are considered as a weighted sum with a LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) formulation. The gain in the well-conditioned observer is optimally chosen by the optimization technique. Simulation examples are given to evaluate the estimation performance of the proposed observer.

  • A centrifugal water chiller using alternative refrigerant R134a has been developed. The prototype was designed to have refrigerating capacity of 300RT. Its compressor employs a single high-speed impeller, airfoil diffuser and collector. Newly developed, enhanced tubes were installed in the evaporator and the condenser to reduce the required head for the compressor. Off-design characteristics at various conditions, performance test of the compressor and analysis of the refrigeration cycle were performed. So the probability of use in part load condition was checked and the direction for revision was suggested.
