Optimal Topologies for Cascaded Sub-Multilevel Converters

  • The general function of a multilevel converter is to synthesize a desired output voltage from several levels of dc voltages as inputs. In order to increase the steps in the output voltage, a new topology is recommended in [1], which benefits from a series connection of sub-multilevel converters. In the procedure described in this reference, despite all the advantages, it is not possible to produce all the steps (odd and even) in the output. In addition, for producing an output voltage with a constant number of steps, there are different configurations with a different number of components. In this paper, the optimal structures for this topology are investigated for various objectives such as minimum number of switches and dc voltage sources and minimum standing voltage on the switches for producing the maximum output voltage steps. Two new algorithms for determining the dc voltage sources magnitudes have been proposed. Finally, in order to verify the theoretical issues, simulation and experimental results for a 49-level converter with a maximum output voltage of 200V are presented.

Thromboembolic Events after Coil Embolization of Cerebral Aneurysms : Prospective Study with Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging Follow-up

  • Objective : In order to assess the incidence of thromboembolic events and their clinical presentations, the present study prospectively examined routine brain magnetic resonance images (MRI) taken within 48 hours after a coil embolization of cerebral aneurysms. Methods : From January 2006 to January 2008, 163 cases of coil embolization of cerebral aneurysm were performed along with routine brain MRI, including diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance (DW-MR) imaging, within 48 hours after the embolization of the aneurysm to detect the silent thromboembolic events regardless of any neurological changes. If any neurological changes were observed, an immediate brain MRI follow-up was performed. High-signal-intensity lesions in the DW-MR images were considered as acute thromboembolic events and the number and locations of the lesions were also recorded. Results : Among the 163 coil embolization cases, 98(60.1%) showed high-signal intensities in the DW-MR imaging follow-up, 66 cases (67.0%) involved the eloquent area and only 6cases (6.0%) showed focal neurological symptoms correlated to the DW-MR findings. The incidence of DW-MR lesions was higher in older patients (${\geq}60$ yrs) when compared to younger patients (<60 yrs) (p=0.002, odd's ratio=1.043). The older patients also showed a higher incidence of abnormal DW-MR signals in aneurysm-unrelated lesions (p=0.0003, odd's ratio=5.078). Conclusion : The incidence of symptomatic thromboembolic attacks after coil embolization of the cerebral aneurysm was found to be lower than that reported in previous studies. While DW-MR imaging revealed a higher number of thromboembolic events, most of these were clinically silent and transient and showed favorable clinical outcomes. However, the incidence of DW-MR abnormalities was higher in older patients, along with unpredictable thromboembolic events on DW-MR images. Thus, in order to provide adequate and timely treatment and to minimize neurological sequelae, a routine DW-MR follow-up after coil embolization of cerebral aneurysms might be helpful, especially in older patients.

Analysis of the Simon effect using Amplitude of RTA-ERP and Response time (응답속도정합-유발전위의 진폭과 응답 속도를 이용한 사이먼효과 분석)

  • In this paper, the RTA-ERP(Response Time Aligned-Evoked Relative Potential) was modelled to analyze the effect of motor activation pattern in response to visual sensory stimuli. Simon effect was analysed using the amplitude response of RTA-ERP and measured response time. The 'odd number' experiments, which identify an odd number mixed with same numbers, was performed with 15 healthy adult participants(9 males and 6 females, whose mean age of 31) for 7 minutes for each participant. Throughout experimentation, we observed that the proposed RTA-ERP can compensate the timing variation due to different neural processing procedures in the brain, and shows enhanced LRP(Lateralized Readiness Potential) and Pe(Error Related Positivity). Regarding to 'congruence' and 'incongruence' testing patterns, the amplitude of RTA-ERP and the response time for the 'congruence' are $0.03{\mu}V$ larger, and 43 ms faster than those for the 'incongruence', respectively. The amplitude characteristics of RTA-ERP, obtained by synchronizing the onset times with respect to response time, corresponds more likely to that of P300 in the ERP pattern (the characteristics of the Simon effect).

Agent-Based Evacuation Simulations of Road Tunnels in the Event of a Fire (도로터널 화재 시의 행위자 기반 대피 시뮬레이션)

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the effects of the number of users and their spatial distribution on the evacuation time in a road tunnel in the event of a fire. An agent-based evacuation model was implemented using Netlogo following the ODD protocol. The proposed model illustrates how the evacuation behavior of one can hinder others across different evacuation environments. Simulations show that evacuation time increases with the number of users when they are randomly located in a road tunnel.

Survey of Damages of Panax ginseng Due to larvae of Holotrichia morose and Holotrichia diomphalia (큰검정풍뎅이 및 참검정풍뎅이 유충에 의한 인삼의 피해발생 조사)

  • In order to establish the integrated management of white grubs in ginseng field damages of ginseng plants (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) by the larvae of the larger black chamfer (Holotrichia morose Waterhouse) and the Korean black chamfer (Holotrichia diomphalia Bates) were investigated. Most of ginseng damages due to H, morose usually occurred in September through October, mainly on 2nd year plants. However, the damage by H. diomphalia occurred in September through October (usually in odd number of years) on 2nd year plants and in the following May and June on 3rd year plants. Therefore, in the fall of every odd number of years, synchronized occurrence of the two species caused severe damage on ginseng plants. Both of the 3rd instar larvae of the forementioned two species damaged ginseng roots regardless of the age of the plants when ginseng plants were artificially infested with them. Ginseng fields located at the slopes with good drainage are most likely damaged by them.

Thermotropic Liquid Crystalline Behaviors of 4-{4'-(nitrophenylazo)phenoxy}alkanoic Acids and 4-{4'-(nitrophenylazo)phenoxy}alkanoyl Chlorides (4-{4'-(니트로페닐아조)펜옥시}알칸 산들 그리고 4-{4'-(니트로페닐아조)펜옥시}알카노일 클로라이드들의 열방성 액정 거동)

  • Two kinds of nitroazobenzene derivatives: 4-{4'-(nitrophenylazo)phenoxy}alkanoic acids (NAAn, n = 2~8, 10, number of methylene units in the alkyl chain) and 4-{4'-(nitrophenylazo)phenoxy}alkanoyl chlorides (NACn, n = 2~8, 10) were synthesized, and their thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviors were investigated. NAA6 formed an enantiotropic nematic phase, while the remainders, except NAA2, showed monotropic nematic phases. Isotropic-nematic transition temperature ($T_{iN}$) and change of entropy (${\Delta}S$) at $T_{iN}$ for both of NAAn and NACn varied by the change of n, and pronounced odd-even effects of n were also observed. However, the $T_{iN}$ and ${\Delta}S$ values of NAAn were much higher than those of NACn. This fact may be attributed to the hydrogen bonding between carboxyl groups. Thermal properties and degree of order in the mesophase and the magnitude of the odd-even effects of both NAAn and NACn were significantly different from those reported for 4-(alkoxy)-4'-nitroazobenzenes. It was discussed in terms of the differences in the molecular anisotropy and the temperature-dependent flexibility of the substituted groups.

Structural characteristics and properties of phase singularities in optical fibers

  • The formation of phase singularities in optical fibers is theoretically and experimentally investigated. In particular, their structural characteristics and properties are discussed in relation to guided mode patterns. It is found that except for the fundamental linearly polarized(LP) modes, all the mixed modes displayed phase singularities in the transverse plane. The results in the few mode fiber show that superposition of the LP even and odd modes produces isolated dark points and phase singularities. Phase singularities are found to be of the screw type and of first order. The number of phase singularities linearly increases with the number of guided modes.

Speeding up Scalar Multiplication in Genus 2 Hyperelliptic Curves with Efficient Endomorphisms

  • This paper proposes an efficient scalar multiplication algorithm for hyperelliptic curves, which is based on the idea that efficient endomorphisms can be used to speed up scalar multiplication. We first present a new Frobenius expansion method for special hyperelliptic curves that have Gallant-Lambert-Vanstone (GLV) endomorphisms. To compute kD for an integer k and a divisor D, we expand the integer k by the Frobenius endomorphism and the GLV endomorphism. We also present improved scalar multiplication algorithms that use the new expansion method. By our new expansion method, the number of divisor doublings in a scalar multiplication is reduced to a quarter, while the number of divisor additions is almost the same. Our experiments show that the overall throughputs of scalar multiplications are increased by 15.6 to 28.3 % over the previous algorithms when the algorithms are implemented over finite fields of odd characteristics.

  • Let γ(n) ≡ {γij} (0 ≤ i+j ≤ 2n, |i-j| ≤ n) be a sequence in the complex number set ℂ and let E (n) be the Embry truncated moment matrices corresponding from γ(n). For an odd number n, it is known that γ(n) has a rank E (n)-atomic representing measure if and only if E(n) ≥ 0 and E(n) admits a flat extension E(n + 1). In this paper we suggest a related problem: if E(n) is positive and nonsingular, does E(n) have a flat extension E(n + 1)? and give a negative answer in the case of E(3). And we obtain some necessary conditions for positive and nonsingular matrix E (3), and also its sufficient conditions.

Let ${\gamma}$ be a generator of $\mathbb{F}^*_q$. Let $\mathcal{H}_n$ be the subset of $\mathbb{A}$ consisting of monic square-free polynomials of degree n. In this paper we obtain an asymptotic formula for the mean value of $L(1,{\chi}_{\gamma}{\small{D}})$ and calculate the average value of the ideal class number $h_{\gamma}\small{D}$ when the average is taken over $D{\in}\mathcal{H}_{2g+2}$.
