Reproductive cycle and spawning rhythm with lunar cycle of the ascidian, Halocynthia hilgendorfi ritteri were investigated by histological examination. The specimens were sampled in the coastal waters of Yongdam, northwest of Jeju Island, Korea, from November 2001 to January 2003. H. hilgendorfi ritteri is a synchronous hermaphrodite; the gonads are located in the mantle. The reproductive cycle can be grouped into the following successive stages in the ovary: growth (February to June), vitellogenesis (April to September), mature (July to December), spent (November to February), and recovery (December to April). Likewise, in the testis, the stages observed were: growth (October), mature (October to December), spent (November to February), and resting (January to September). Major spawning probably occurs between November and January, when water temperatures decrease. The histological observations of the gonads suggested that this species is a multiple spawner during the spawning period. Spawning occurred between the new moon and full moon, and again between the full moon and new moon, suggesting that the spawning rhythm is influenced by the lunar cycle.
This is the first report of Chaetodontoplus melanosoma, belonging to the family Pomacanthidae, collected in Korea. The specimen (123.1 mm in standard length) was caught in the coastal waters of Jejudo Island by a trammel net on 23 February 2010. This species was characterized by the following morphological traits: 26 dorsal fin rays, 16 pectoral fin rays, 6 pelvic fin, 21 anal fin rays, no blue strips on the body, no markings behind the eye, and an egg-shaped faint black spot on the base of the pectoral fin. We suggest a new Korean name "Geom-eun-cheong-jul-dom" for C. melanosoma.
Three generalized additive models were applied to the distribution of anchovy eggs and oceanographic factors to determine the occurrence of anchovy spawning grounds in Korean waters and to identify the indicators of their occurrence using survey data from the spring and summer of 1985, 1995, and 2002. Binomial and Gaussian types of generalized additive models (GAM) and quantile generalized additive models (QGAM) revealed that egg density was influenced mostly by ocean temperature and salinity in spring, and the vertical structure of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and zooplankton biomass during summer in the upper quantiles of egg density. The GAM and QGAM model deviance explained 18.5-63.2% of the egg distribution in summer in the East and West Sea. For the principle component analysis-based GAMs, the variance explained by the final regression model was 27.3-67.0%, higher than the regular models and QGAMs for egg density in the East and West Sea. By analyzing the distribution of anchovy eggs off the Korean coast, our results revealed the optimal temperature and salinity conditions, in addition to high production and high vertical mixing, as the key indicators of the major spawning grounds of anchovies.
This thesis analyzes Somali piracy as a non-traditional threat to the Sea Lines of Communication (SLOC) and international countermeasures to the piracy. In an era of globally interdependent economies, the protection of sea lines and freedom of navigation are prerequisites for the development of states. Since the post-Cold War began in the early 1990s, ocean piracy has emerged as a significant threat to international trade. For instance, in the Malacca Strait which carries 30 percent of the world's trade volume, losses from failed shipping, insurance, plus other subsequent damages were enormous. Until the mid-2000s, navies and coast guards from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, together with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), conducted anti-piracy operations in the Strait of Malacca. The combined efforts of these three maritime states, through information sharing and with reinforced assets including warships and patrol aircrafts, have successfully made a dent to lower incidents of piracy. Likewise, the United Nations' authorization of multinational forces to operate in Somali waters has pushed interdiction efforts including patrol and escort flotilla support. This along with self-reinforced security measures has successfully helped lower piracy from 75 incidents in 2012 to 15 in 2013. As illustrated, Somali piracy is a direct security threat to the international community and the SLOC which calls for global peacekeeping as a countermeasure. Reconstructing the economy and society to support public safety and stability should be the priority solution. Emphasis should be placed on restoring public peace and jurisdiction for control of piracy as a primary countermeasure.
Data on squid catches, water temperature, and climatic factors collected for the Northwest and subtropical North Pacific were analyzed to examine the influence of oceanic and climatic conditions in spawning grounds on catches of Japanese common squid, Todarodes pacificus, in the East (Japan) Sea. The main spawning ground was divided into four sub-areas: the South Sea of Korea (R1), the southern waters off Jeju, Korea (R2), the southwestern part of Kyushu, Japan (R3), and the northern part of Okinawa, Japan (R4). Interannual and decadal fluctuations in water temperatures correlated well with squid catches in the East/Japan Sea. In particular, water temperatures at a depth of 50 to 100 m in sub-areas R3 and R4 showed higher correlation coefficients (0.54 to 0.59, p<0.01) in relation to squid catches in the East/Japan Sea than for R1 and R2, which had correlation coefficients of 0.40 or less (p>0.05). Air temperature and wind velocity fluctuations in each sub-area are correlated with water temperature fluctuations and were closely connected with variations in the surface mixed layers. Water, air temperatures and wind velocities at the main spawning grounds are linked to the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) with higher signals in the ca. 2-4-year band. Strong changes in a specific band and phase occurred around 1976/77 and 1986/87, coincident with changes in squid catches.
Benthic amphipod, Grandidierella japonica widely inhabits the Korean coastal waters and is developed as a standard test species for sediment toxicity tests. We exposed G. japonica to various pollutants including 4 kinds of inorganic metals (Ag, Cd, Cu and Hg), tributyltin [TBT], ammonia and 7 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds (acenaphthene, chrysene, fluoranthene, fluorene, naphthalene, phenanthrene and pyrene) to estimate the no observed effect concentration (NOEC) and the median lethal concentration (LC50) of each pollutant during the 96-hour acute exposure. Among all tested pollutants, TBT was most toxic to G. japonica, and Rg was most toxic among inorganic metals. The toxicity of pyrene to G. japonica was greatest among PAH compounds, followed by fluoranthene, phenanathrene, acenaphthene, fluorene and naphthalene. The toxicity of PAH compounds was closely related to their physico-chemical characteristics such as $K_ow$ and water solubility. G. japonica responded adequately to pollutant concentrations and exposure durations, and the sensitivity of G. japonica to various inorganic and organic pollutants was generally comparable to other amphipods used as standard test species in ecotoxicological studies, indicating this species can be applied in the assessment of environments polluted by various harmful substances.
Low salinity water was observed during May in the Cheju Strait. Its structure and source were studied by using both the hydrographic data collected not only in the Cheju Strait during 1987-1989 but also in the wider area around Cheju Island extending to the Bank of Changjiang river in 1994 and the current data taken in the Strait during 1987-1989. The water had lower values of temperature, salinity, and density compared with the surrounding water and it was found in the surface layer outside of Tsushima Current Water 10-50 km off Cheju coast. The density of low salinity water was more dependent on salinity than on temperature. The low salinity water flowed into the Strait from the west as a series of intermittent waters whose size was variable in width and in thickness. The low salinity water was originated from the Chanajiang River Diluted Water. In the Cheju Strait, the water showed changes within 3 days on time and 30-50 km on space, and its sudden appearance was marked especially in May. Such strong variability and sudden appearance may be attributed to the beginning stage in May when the fresh water of Changjiang River Diluted Water starts to arrive in the Cheju Strait.
Formerly T. Nishimura, T. Oshima and M. Otsuru studied on Anisakis-like larvae in the various marine fishes from the Japan Sea and the Pacific Ocean. In the present observation, many kinds of marine fishes from the Yellow Sea and the southern coast of Korea were. studied, with the samples from the islands: Eocheng-do, Sohuksan-do, Chuja-do and Keomun-do. The authors examined 313 samples from the adjacent waters of Korea and the distribution of the Anisakis-like larvae in the fish body was found to be 9,219 larvae of Anisakis-like larvae found in the mesentery and coelomic cavity of all samples. Of them, 8,112 Anisakis-like larvae were found from 187 samples from the southern coast of Korea, 1,107 Anisakis-like larvae were found in 126 samples from the Yellow sea (Tables 1 & 2). The fish from the southern coast of Korea are much more infected than the fish from. the Yellow Sea. The larger the fish length, the heavier infection of Anisakis-like larvae were observed.

Temperature inversion off Wasaka Bay in the East Sea was studied using data measured on a CREAMS cruise in June of 1995 and 1996. Temperature inversion occurred mainly at the upper layer of the thermocline at a depth of no more than 20 m and around the thermal front between the TWC and the coastal waters of Japan. At some stations. temperature inversion had an influence un density inversion, while, in some other stations, high salinity water prevented density inversion.

In the present study, wave deformation and wave-induced current were calculated under the regular wave conditions using the Boussinesq model. The model results of the wave deformation showed good agreements with the preceeding laboratory experiments of others. The wave-induced current of the fully developed sea state was calculated. For field application of model, the preceeding field data by others in the real scale of the water area were compared, the numerical result of wave deformation showed a relatively good agreement with the field data. Although the numerical result of wave-induced current was underestimated over the longshore bar developed area, the Boussinesq model is generally suitable to predict the wave-induced current.
