Kelvin Ship Wake Modification due to Wind Waves

  • A kinematics model of a ship wake in the presence of surface waves generated by wind is presented. It was found that a stationary wave structure behind a ship covered a wedge region with the angle at the top of the wake and that only divergent waves were present in a ship wake instead of both the longitudinal and cross-waves, which are known as the Kelvin model. Ship motion at some angle to wind waves can cause an essential asymmetry of the wake, compressing its windward half.

  • This paper concerns about a study on dynamic responses of tracked vehicle on soft cohesive soil. For dynamic analyses of tracked vehicle, two different models were adopted, i.e. a single-body model and a multi-body model. The single-body vehicle model was assumed as a rigid body with 6-dof. The multi-body vehicle was modeled by using a commercial software, RecurDyn-LM. For the both models properties of cohesive soft soil were modeled by means of three relationships: pressure to sinkage, shear displacement to shear stress, and shear displacement to dynamic sinkage. Traveling performances of the two tracked vehicle models were compared through dynamic analyses in time domain.

  • This paper describes a design model for the conceptual design of ships. Existing design models have problems such that their operating mode of batch versions cannot reflect the design procedures in reality. Reliability of the results is low because the performance estimations are based mainly on empirical formulas. To improve the problems of existing design models, a new design model has been developed. The new model consists of an interactive user interface, a database of main engines, a database of particulars of existing ships, and ten modules for performance estimations. To develop such a user-oriented system, the concept of graphical user interface (GUI) is adopted.

Salt and Sand Transport from Aral Sea Basin

  • Model for dust and salt transportation from the dried bottom of the Aral Sea is suggested. Theoretical analysis is based on the turbulent diffusion equation for the averaged function of passive impurity concentration. One-layer model of the atmospheric boundary layer is assumed. Impurity precipitation rates are calculated as the functions of the particle size and the distance source of particles. Analytical solutions for the point and two-dimensional sources of impurities are found. Model calculations for salt and sand transport from the Aral Sea basin are made on the basis of 2D source model with a constant intensity.

Model test of an inverted conical cylinder floating offshore wind turbine moored by a spring-tensioned-leg

  • A new 5-MW floating offshore wind turbine moored by a spring-tensioned-leg was proposed for installation in about 50m water depth. Its substructure is a platform of the inverted conical cylinder type with massive ballast weight plate at the bottom. A 1:128 scale model was built for the preliminary engineering development. The model tests in waves and wind were carried out to estimate motion characteristics of this platform in the Ocean Engineering Wide Tank of the University of Ulsan. Its motions were measured and the RAOs were compared. The proposed floating offshore wind turbine showed a good stability and decent responses in waves, wind and operation of the wind turbine.

  • A North Pacific Ocean Model has been developed with the Global Ocean Model of the Meteorological Research Institute of Japan which solves the primitive equations with Boussinesq, rigid-lid, and hydrostatic assumptions.   • This study investigates the accuracy of short-term ocean predictions during the development of ocean stratification for the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Global Seasonal Forecast System version 5 (GloSea5) as well as the effect of atmosphere-ocean coupling on the predictions through a series of sensitive numerical experiments. Model performance is evaluated using the marine meteorological buoys at seas around the Korean peninsular (KP), Tropical Atmosphere Ocean project (TAO) buoys over the tropical Pacific ocean, and ARGO floats data over the western North Pacific for boreal winter (February) and spring (May). Sensitive experiments are conducted using an ocean-atmosphere coupled model (i.e., GloSea5) and an uncoupled ocean model (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean, NEMO) and their results are compared. The verification results revealed an overall good performance for the SST predictions over the tropical Pacific ocean and near the Korean marginal seas, in which the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) were $0.31{\sim}0.45^{\circ}C$ and $0.74{\sim}1.11^{\circ}C$ respectively, except oceanic front regions with large spatial and temporal SST variations (the maximum error reached up to $3^{\circ}C$). The sensitive numerical experiments showed that GloSea5 outperformed NEMO over the tropical Pacific in terms of bias and RMSE analysis, while NEMO outperformed GloSea5 near the KP regions. These results suggest that the atmosphere-ocean coupling substantially influences the short-term ocean forecast over the tropical Pacific, while other factors such as atmospheric forcing and the accuracy of simulated local current are more important than the coupling effect for the KP regions being far from tropics during the development of ocean stratification.

  • For the optimization design and strength evaluation of the umbilical cable, the calculation of cross section stress is of great importance and very time consuming. To calculate the cross section stress under combined tension and bending loads, a new integrated analytical model of umbilical cable is presented in this paper. Based on the Hook's law, the axial strain of helical components serves as the tensile stress. Considering the effects of friction between helical components, the bending stress is divided into elastic bending stress and friction stress. For the former, the elastic bending stress, the curvature of helical components is deduced; and for the latter, the shear stress before and after the slipping of helical components is determined. This new analytical model is validated by the experimental results of an umbilical cable. Further, this model is applied to estimate the extreme strength and fatigue life of the umbilical cable used in South China Sea.

Comparison of RIAMOM and MOM in Modeling the East Sea/Japan Sea Circulation

  • The seasonal variations in the circulation of the water mass in the East Sea/Japan Sea have been simulated using a free surface primitive ocean model, RIAMOM (RIAM Ocean Model), comparing the results from GFDL-MOM1 (Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Modular Ocean Model, version 1.1, hereafter MOM) with the GDEM (Generalized Digital Environmental Model) data. Both models appear to successfully reproduce the distinct features of circulation in the East Sea/Japan Sea, such as the NB (Nearshore Branch) flowing along the Japanese coast, the EKWC (East Korean Warm Current) flowing northward along the Korean coast, and the NKCC/LCC (North Korean Cold Current/Liman Cold Current) flowing southwestward along Korean/Russian coast. RIAMOM has shown better performance, compared to MOM, in terms of the realistic simulation of the flow field in the East Sea/Japan Sea; RIAMOM has produced more rectified flows on the coastal region, for example, the narrower and stronger NKCC/LCC than MOM has. There is however obvious differences between the model results and the GDEM data in terms of the calculation of the water mass; both models have shown a tendency to overpredict temperature and underpredict salinity below 50m; more diffusive forms of thermocline and halocline have been simulated than noted in GDEM data.

선박의 저항성능 추정을 위한 EARSM 난류 모형의 활용 (Numerical Prediction of Ship Hydrodynamic Performances using Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Turbulence Model)

  • In this study, Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Model (EARSM) which is based on the existing ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model has been applied to the flow field analysis around ship hulls. Existing transport equations for the turbulent kinetic energy and the dissipation rate are used in almost the same form and anisotropy terms of Reynolds stresses are newly considered. The well-known KVLCC2 and KCS hull forms are selected as validation cases, which were also used in 2010 Workshop on CFD in Ship Hydrodynamics. In case of KVLCC2 double model, comparison of mean velocity distribution, turbulent kinetic energy, and Reynolds stresses near the propeller plane has been carried out and wave elevation and wave profiles have been additionally studied for KCS and KVLCC2 with free surface models. Some improved results for mean velocity distribution at the propeller plane have been obtained while there is little change in free surface wave profiles.
