A Study on Optimal Design of Mud Tank with Response Surface Optimization (반응표면 최적화를 이용한 머드탱크 최적 설계에 관한 연구)

  • Mud tanks used for storing and supplying mud in mud supply systems are essential to secure structural stability according to the mud loads inside the tank. In terms of structural stability of the mud tank can be ensured by increasing the thickness of the structure. However, increasing the thickness may cause a problem of increasing production costs. In addition, this increases the weight of the tank, which can cause problems with the trailer loading weight limitation during transportation. To satisfy both these problems and structural stability, the mud tank should be optimally designed. Therefore, this study conducted an optimum design in consideration of the load of the mud tank through the structural analysis and response surface optimization method in ANSYS.

  • As a global effort for eco-friendly, the ship building is making great efforts to develop ships using low-carbon, eco-friendly alternative fuels. Nuclear energy, one of several eco-friendly alternative energy sources, is evaluated as an effective alternative for future ships by minimizing carbon emissions and securing economic feasibility with low power generation cost. However, although appropriate regulatory requirements are necessary for commercialization of nuclear powered ships, there are currently no regulatory requirements for nuclear powered ships in Korea. In this study, accordingly, domestic and international regulatory requirements related to nuclear powered ships were reviewed, matters to be considered in terms of safety when developing domestic marine nuclear reactor regulatory requirements were derived, and a licensing regulatory system for nuclear powered ships was derived.This study is expected to be used as basic reference data when developing regulatory requirements for nuclear powered ships.

A Study on Roll Reduction Devices for FPSOs (FPSO의 횡요 감쇠 장치에 대한 고찰)

  • Several roll motion reduction devices are reviewed and suggested for the application in FPSO. The firstly suggested solution is the shape of the bilge. The next is a bilge keel. The last suggestion is the ART (anti-rolling tank). Typical U-tube type ART is designed for a FPSO and examined extensively by model experiment. The model section was made of transparent acryl. Free decay test, forced oscillation test and wave test were carried out at a two-dimensional wave flume. U-tube type ART is effective only when the natural periods of ART and ship are same. Therefore, the divided U-tube type ART with split plate is suggested for the reduction of the roll motion of a FPSO over the wide range of the roll period.

  • The industry has undergone a significant change over the last decade: digital business has become a strategy to survive; the extended enterprise is being implemented; parts are made where conditions are most favourable; non-core activities are out-sourced; advanced manufacturing systems and information technologies are introduced to improve manufacturing performance. Suppliers and distributors become part of the supply chain and they all comprise an integrated international co-operative network to provide manufactured goods and support services for a world market just in time, at low prices and with quality surpassing customers' expectations. In this paper, we review various state-of-the-art information technologies for the shipbuilding industry. The successful introduction and implementation of those technologies will be the key enabler for e-transformation in the shipbuilding industry.

  • The analysis on the international safety management code (ISM Code) and case of foreign national safety management for fishing vessel was conducted to serve as a basic data on the introduction of safety management system (SMS) for a deep-sea fishing vessel in Korea. As a result, Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) has managed operations of SMS in the maritime rules according to the Maritime Transport Act since 1994. MNZ underwent a safe ship management (SSM), which includes elements applied to shipping companies, ship and verification of the ISM Code for ships, except ISM Code application since 1998. In 2014 the introduction of the advanced maritime operator safety system (MOSS) superior to the SSM by MNZ was promoted actively switch and enforcement. Meanwhile, the safe operation manual of Japanese fishing vessel includes large part of the contents of the ISM Code, and voluntary implementation to fit the realities of the fishing vessel. The law application of SMS for a deep-sea fishing vessel after the newly establishment of the Ocean Industry Development Act to SMS would be advantageous to the schematic management, supervision, maintenance and application and, in 2016 from the implementation of maritime safety supervisor for a deep-sea fishing vessel that the management and supervision through the fishing vessel will be the efficient operation. The configuration of the safety management system in a deep-sea fishing vessel should be included as an element of ISM Code. The introduction of such a system is gradually applicable, such as nationality overseas vessel case study of the ISM Code, and vessels that are excluded from the application will be implemented as autonomous as Japan. The results are expected to contribute to sustainable development in the ocean industry safety culture spread throughout the ocean industry through the enhancement of safety fishing competency and safety management responsibility of fisher.

  • Deep Sea Water (DSW) has recently drawn attention due to the considerable benefits provided by low-temperature, various minerals included, purity and safety of the water resource. Since Korean DSW-industry initiated exploitation of the alternative water resource in 2008, it merely took off, but remains in the infant stage. It is mainly because the industry has only focused on production of drinkable bottled water, and failed to improve sustainability and competitiveness. On the contrary, not a few oversea DSW industries (e.g. Japanese and Taiwanese DSW industries) have successfully cultivated their markets, and have become leading cases of the industry. The common success factors learned from the cases are as follows; 1) They continuously invest on technology innovation, introduce new DSW-based products, and increase the usability of DSW in various areas of products and services, and 2) they strategically focus on high value-added products rather than just bottled water products. This paper examines the cases of the advanced DSW industries and analyzes patent data and their technology-based development strategies.

  • Aquaculture have been important role to supply food resources for mankind. However, competitive power of domestic mariculture industry was declined due to increase of labor and feed expenditures, and quantity import of low-priced livefishes from the developing underdeveloped nations in North and South East Asia. Mass production and quality enhancement can be pointed out to overcome such an industrial environment in this decade. To meet these requirement, movable mariculture base remodeling feasible vessel of chemical tanker or crude oil carrier has been proposed for more advanced mariculture management system by using deep seawater from about 200m which is sustainablely clean, nutrient-rich and cold seawater. Deep seawater can be applied for control of seawater temperature for mariculture base and cultivation phytoplankton and seaweed as feed. Besides mariculture, strategic marketing can be implemented by raw water and ice of deep seawater. Feasibility of applying deep seawater was considered after evaluating general movable mariculture base and management system.

  • With the advent of Internet era, e-commerce has become the focus of human's life. It leads a new direction of social development. As the representative of traditional industry, shipping industry is confronted with a series of difficulties, which have to break through the traditional and existing model to make their business for survival. With the increasing pricking up of market competition, shipping industry is now facing development bottle neck, but e-commerce provides a new way to solve the problem. This paper firstly describes the existing forms of the e-commerce shipping platform. Secondly analyzes the data for the situation of shipping industry in China, the data for expected functions of an e-commerce shipping platform and the data for how to choose a specific e-commerce shipping platform. Thirdly analyzes the potential risks of establishing e-commerce shipping platform in China. Based on the above researched, the paper provides a suggested model of the shipping e-commerce shipping platform in China.

  • Kenya is a sovereign country with a vast potential in maritime industry. Though Kenya is known to have made it in IMO white list on $14^{TH}$ May 2010, she is making huge investments in maritime industry in an effort to have a share of booming world maritime industry and sea trade. Statistics has it that 90% of trade volume is carried on the sea, which is strong indication that for any country inspiring to be an economic powerhouse it has to have a lion share of sea trade volume, and one of the proven ways in gaining economic success is by investing heavily in maritime infrastructure. The purpose of this paper is to give a brief description of marine traffic status in port of Mombasa which is the largest port in Kenya, highlight vital features of multi-billion Lamu port investment under taken by the Kenyan government and finally discuss the future of maritime industry and Kenyan seafarer.
