  • Bidirectional transport trend using the sediment-transport path model was identified in the two areas, sand ridge area and tidal mudflat in Garolim Bay, which is located in the mid-western coast of Korean Peninsular. This model exhibits the two-dimensional view of clear sediment transport trend based on data of changes in sediment statistics such as mean, sorting, and skewness, Garolim Bay was selected to test for the sediment-transport path model developed by McLaren and Bowles [1985]. Line-S, a typical tidal mudflat and representative of the Garolim Bay tidal flats, is well tested by this model, showing a clear seasonal change and coarsening-trend seaward (case C). This indicates that strong ebb currents carried relatively coarser sediments seaward with respect to high energy regime. Seasonally, this energy regime slowly decreases toward the summer in contrast with an increase of energy regime of flood tides, carrying coarser sediments landward (case C) in the summer. However, the Line-D area does not show consistent transport trend with respect to time-series. Separated and scattered events show fining trend landward (case B) in the sand ridge itself. The finining-trend (case B) either seaward and landward is not chiefly important in both the entire Line-D area and sand ridge itself. Also, the coarsening-Trend (case C) landward is not significant in the sand ridge itself. Consequently, in reality, the selection of suitable and representative locations are very important to fit with this model.

  • To produce a level-3 monthly composite image from daily level-2 Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) chlorophyll-a concentration data set in the East Sea, we applied four average methods such as the simple average method, the geometric mean method, the maximum likelihood average method, and the weighted averaging method. Prior to performing each averaging method, we classified all pixels into normal pixels and abnormal speckles with anomalously high chlorophyll-a concentrations to eliminate speckles from the following procedure for composite methods. As a result, all composite maps did not contain the erratic effect of speckles. The geometric mean method tended to underestimate chlorophyll-a concentration values all the time as compared with other methods. The weighted averaging method was quite similar to the simple average method, however, it had a tendency to be overestimated at high-value range of chlorophyll-a concentration. Maximum likelihood method was almost similar to the simple average method by demonstrating small variance and high correlation (r=0.9962) of the differences between the two. However, it still had the disadvantage that it was very sensitive in the presence of speckles within a bin. The geometric mean was most significantly deviated from the remaining methods regardless of the magnitude of chlorophyll-a concentration values. Its bias error tended to be large when the standard deviation within a bin increased with less uniformity. It was more biased when data uniformity became small. All the methods exhibited large errors as chlorophyll-a concentration values dominantly scatter in terms of time and space. This study emphasizes the importance of the speckle removal process and proper selection of average methods to reduce composite errors for diverse scientific applications of satellite-derived chlorophyll-a concentration data.

  • Ship Power Management System(SPMS) based on Communication Network(CN) is one of the most significant factor for a safe voyage. Therefore, most of the vessels are using greater capacity generator than necessary to prevent pulsating load for safety purposes. However, It provokes low-load damage and reduces generator efficiency that using large capacity generator. Accordingly, in this paper propose hybrid power system for prevent damage of pulse load. Simulation using NI's LabVIEW was conducted for the design of the power system based on actual navigation data of the ship. Also, propose applying methods for hybrid power system in connection with the auxiliary power system for safe navigation.

  • Arleigh Burke(DDG-51) and Sejong warship are AEGIS destroyer of US Navy and Korea Navy. These are designed to make more than 30knots by applying a COGAG(COmbined Gas turbine And Gas turbine) system. However, the gas turbine(LM2500) in this system has a low SFC (Specific Fuel Consumption) when the warship operated low speed. So, many kinds of companies are researching the HED(Hybrid Electric Drive) system to improve this problem. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the HED system and simulate by Sejong warship data. Serveral methods were used for that purpose. More specifically, the equipment modeling are employed for regression analysis by LabVIEW. As a result, it was found that the warship installed HED system could cut their fuel bills by as much as about 80,000,000won per year.

  • In view of the importance of material reduction because of the jump in oil and steel prices, structural design studies for lifting lugs were performed. Hundreds of thousands of such lifting lug structures are needed every year for ship construction. A direct design study was reviewed using the developed design system to increase the design efficiency and provide a way of directly inserting a designer's decisions into the design system process. In order to understand the design efficiency and convenience of a lug structure, parametric studies for prototype lug shapes were performed using the developed design system. From these design studies, various patterns of design parameters for the lug structure according to changes in the main plate length were examined. Based on these parametric study results, design guides were developed for more efficiently suggesting structural data for enormous lug structures. Additionally, a more detailed structural analysis through local strength evaluations will be performed to verify the efficiency of the optimum structural design for a lug structure.

  • This paper aims at the elucidation of the characteristics of longshore current profile after wave breaking. Wave breakers are always accompanied by complex turbulent process, wave energy losess occur and the mean water level also varies due to the gradient of radiation stress. These with other factors result in the development of longshore currents. Longshore currents have relations to the alongshore sand transport and to the diffusion of contaminants in nearshore region, thus the understanding and elucidation of them are very important from the engineering point of view. Using the calculated results, the factors such as lateral mixing cofficients, bed shear stress. wave angle. wave steepness and bottom slope. which are influencing the longshore current profile. are examined. Also, by comparing the results of longshore currents with the experimental data obtained by other investigators, the procedure proposed in the present study is shown to be valid.

  • As vessels become larger and competition between ports intensifies, there has been an increase in the number of cases where vessels that exceed the available berths are berthed at the pier. Therefore, there has been an increase in the number of cases in which the bow or stern of a ship is projected and moored. The risk of overhanging berthing is that mooring safety can be compromised because it is not possible to connect the bow and stern mooring line to the ship properly. In addition, collision accidents may occur between moving vessels if the view of a vessel moving in the port is obstructed. Therefore, in this study, the simulation of mooring safety was performed according to the overhanging range in Piers No. 6 and 7 in Ulsan's main port to propose the overhanging limit and operational standards according to each ship. As a result of the assessment, 30,000 DWT bulkers are able to overhang up to 0.75B, and 50,000 DWT bulkers can overhang up to 0.50B. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for setting the allowable overhang limit, as well as clear usage criteria for safe unloading operations.

  • Monthly mean data of ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent and Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) from Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) measurements over the East Asian waters were analyzed. Increasing trend of the satellite-derived ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent from 1998 to 2004 was found while AOT mean was observed stable during the same period. The trend of ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent is then interpreted as increase in fraction of small aerosol particles to give quantitative estimates on the variability of aerosols. The mean increase is evaluated to be $4{\sim}5%$ over the 7-year period in terms of the contribution of small particles to the total AOT, or sub-micron fraction (SMF). Possibilities of the observed trend arising from the sensor calibration or algorithm performance are carefully checked, which confirm our belief that this observed trend is rather a real fact than an artifact due to data processing. Another time series of SMF data (2000-2005) estimated from the fine-mode fraction (FMF) of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) supports this observation yet with different calibration system and retrieval algorithms.

  • Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the Korean Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform worldwide ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography. The instrument images the ocean surface using a whisk-broom motion with a swath width of 800 km and a ground sample distance (GSD) of less than 1 km over the entire field-of-view (FOV). The instrument is designed to have an on-orbit operation duty cycle of 20% over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable gain/offset and on-orbit image data storage. The instrument also performs sun calibration and dark calibration for on-orbit instalment calibration. The OSMI instrument is a multi-spectral imager covering the spectral range from 400 nm to 900 nm using a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) Focal Plane Array (FPA). The ocean colors are monitored using 6 spectral channels that can be selected via ground commands after launch. The instrument performances are fully measured for 8 basic spectral bands centered at 412, 443, 490, 510, 555, 670, 765 and 865 nm during ground characterization of instalment. In addition to the ground calibration, the on-orbit calibration will also be used for the on-orbit band selection. The on-orbit band selection capability can provide great flexibility in ocean color monitoring.
