  • The risk of a fire in a building is closely related to the usage of the building. In particular, all fires that occur in a building are not risky to safety of human life, and it is associated with the combustion area and the increase of total floor area of the building. Therefore, this study focused on safety of human life in terms of the statistics of fire with considering the aspect of growing fires and analyzed the statistical data of fire for 10 years. As for the analysis on fire, the time of occurrence by usages of buildings, frequency of occurrence and the ratio of casualties etc. were analyzed. It is expected that results of this study could be used for evaluations on a variety of parts in terms of design, construction and maintenance of buildings.

  • One directional and biaxial tension tests of 13 reinforced concrete panels were conducted to derive a constitutive law of concrete. Based on the test results, a model equation is derived for the stress-strain relationship of concrete in tension. Main test variables are reinforcement ratio and the load ratio applied in two directions. In addition a failure envelope of concrete in tension-tension region is suggested based on the initial crack occurrence. Test results show that the concrete carries substantial tensile stress even after cracking occurrence. However, the application of this proposed stress-strain relationship for concrete is limited to the case where the direction of reinforcement coincides with the direction of the applied principal stresses.

  • In the study of traffic safety, the analysis on factors affecting crash severity and the understanding about their relationship is important to be planning and execute to improve safety of road and traffic facilities. The purpose of this study is to develop a hierarchical binomial logistic model to identify the significant factors affecting fatal injuries and vehicle damages of traffic crashes on freeway. Two models on death and total vehicle damage are developed. The hierarchical structure of response variable is composed of two level, crash-occupant and crash-vehicle. As a result, we have gotten the crash-level random effect from these hierarchical structure as well as the fixed effect of covariates, namely odds ratio. The crash on the main line and in-out section have greater damage than other facilities. Injuries and vehicle damages are severe in case of traffic violations, centerline invasion and speeding. Also, collision crash and fire occurrence is more severe damaged than other crash types. The surrounding environment of surface conditions by climate and visibility conditions by day and night is a significant factor on crash occurrence. On the orher hand, the geometric condition of road isn't.

  • This study attempted to develop and suggest a more appropriate method for the determination of event mean concentration (EMC) and pollutant removal efficiency of a stormwater best management practice (BMP) considering rainfall. The stormwater runoff and hydrologic data gathered from 22 storm events during a 28-month monitoring period on a swirl and filtration type of BMP were used to evaluate the developed methods. Based on the findings, the modified EMC method resulted in lower (average) values than the overall EMC, although the differences were not significant (P>0.05). By comparison, the developed 'Rainfall Occurrence Ratio' (ROR) method was most significantly correlated (r=0.967 to 988, P<0.009) with the other existing removal efficiency determination methods such as the 'Efficiency Ratio' (ER), 'Summation of Loads' (SOL) and 'Regression of Loads' (ROL) methods. In addition, the ROR method gave the highest efficiency values, with no significant differences with any of the pollutant parameters, unlike the other three methods. These results were obtained because the ROR method integrated both pollutant loading and rainfall, which are not considered by the other three methods. Therefore, this study proved the suitability of the modified EMC and ROR methods for application in other BMP monitoring studies.

  • In this study the relative dynamic modulus and surface rebound hardness measurement methods were used for comparison to predict the occurrence of frost dam age on the concrete. From the test results, it was observed that the initiation of concrete dam age predicted by surface rebound hardness values was 200 cycles quicker than that of the relative dynamic modulus method in the W/C 70 specimens. In addition, it continuously provided data that showed the frost damage development of concrete surfaces according to increasing freeze-thaw cycles. This indicated that the frost dam age of the concrete could be found from the initial point of its occurrence by the surface rebound hardness measurement method. Similar results were also observed in W/C 60 and 50 specimens. Therefore, it is considered that surface rebound hardness method predicted the freeze-thaw damage well, regardless of water-cement ratio.

  • This study presents an optimal seismic design method based on genetic algorithms to induce beam-hinge collapse mechanisms in reinforced concrete moment frames. Two objective functions are used. The first minimizes the cost of the structure and the second maximizes the energy dissipation capacity of the structure. Constraints include strength conditions of columns and beams, minimum conditions for column-to-beam flexural strength ratio, and conditions for preventing plastic hinge occurrence of columns. Linear static analysis is performed to evaluate the strength of members, whereas nonlinear static analysis is carried out to evaluate energy dissipation capacity and occurrence of plastic hinges. The proposed method was applied to a four-story example structure, and it was confirmed that solutions for inducing a beam-hinge collapse mechanism are obtained. The value of the column-beam flexural strength ratio of the obtained design was found to be larger than the value suggested by existing seismic codes. A more robust strategy is needed to induce a beam-hinge collapse mode.

  • In this paper we suggest a development of surface defect inspection algorithms for cold mill strip using tree structure. The defects which exist in a surface of cold mill strip have a scattering or singular distribution. This paper consists of preprocessing, feature extraction and defect classification. By preprocessing, the binarized defect image is achieved. In this procedure, Top-hit transform, adaptive thresholding, thinning and noise rejection are used. Especially, Top-hit transform using local min/max operation diminishes the effect of bad lighting. In feature extraction, geometric, moment, co-occurrence matrix, histogram-ratio features are calculated. The histogram-ratio feature is taken from the gray-level image. For the defect classification, we suggest a tree structure of which nodes are multilayer neural network clasifiers. The proposed algorithm reduced error rate comparing to one stage structure.

  • In developing an automated surface inspect algorithm, we have designed a hierarchical classifier using neural network. The defects which exist on the surface of cold mill strip have a scattering or singular distribution. We have considered three major problems, that is preprocessing, feature extraction and defect classification. In preprocessing, Top-hit transform, adaptive thresholding, thinning and noise rejection are used Especially, Top-hit transform using local minimax operation diminishes the effect of bad lighting. In feature extraction, geometric, moment, co-occurrence matrix, and histogram ratio features are calculated. The histogram ratio feature is taken from the gray-level image. For defect classification, we suggest a hierarchical structure of which nodes are multilayer neural network classifiers. The proposed algorithm reduced error rate by comparing to one-stage structure.

  • Hydrogen gas has several merits such as lower ignition energy, wide flammability and shorter quenching distance. It leads to high thermal efficiency but backfire occurrence. In this study, feasibility of expansion of BFL(Back-Fire Limit) equivalence ratio and combustion characteristics by a dilution of hydrogen fuel are experimently examined by using experimental heavy duty single cylinder hydrogen fueled engine. As results, it is found that BFL equivalence ratio is expanded to rich range and torque is increased.

  • One of the important aspects of ductility is redistribution. To see the difference of redistribution between reinforced concrete members and prestressed concrete beams, two span continuous concrete beams are tested. From the test results, we can get important information on the redistribution ratio. After occurrence of crack at support section, the redistribution ratio increased and after yielding they fluctated very much. Compare with reinforced concrete, the redistribution ratio of prestressed concrete beam changed more abruptly after yielding. Both of the them show limited redistribution up to 70%.
