Evaluation of Ramp Test Using Human Perception (인지적 평가기준을 이용한 Ramp Test의 특성평가)

  • The objectives of this study were to compare the results of HSL (Health and Safety Laboratory) ramp test with perceived sense of slip onto the several different floor surfaces under contaminated conditions. There are a variety of approaches from biomechanical measurements to psychophysical test and human perception. However, controversies over these approaches still remain. Some widely accepted methods need to be improved. AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) was used to evaluate the perception of slipperiness of seven different floor surfaces under the contaminated condition with glycerol solution. Twelve subjects worn same footwear and walked with self-selected step and cadence along the test floors. The angle of inclination obtained for water wet condition using 5 l/min with HSL ramp test was compared to perception of slipperiness. The surface roughness ($R_z$) related very well both AHP (r=0.95) and ramp test (r=0.92). The high significant correlation (r=0.90) was found between AHP and HSL ramp test.The HSL ramp test values (Coefficient of Friction, COF) according to subjective evaluation were divided into two categories. There were high correlations between test results (subjective evaluation, HSL ramp test) and surface roughness in Rz. Perception rating obtained with AHP showed a high correlation with COF obtained with HSL ramp test.

The Measurement and Investigation of Fire and Explosion Properties for Cyclohexane (사이클로헥산의 화재 및 폭발 특성치의 측정 및 고찰)

  • For the safe handling of cyclohexane, the explosion limit at $25^{\circ}C$ and the temperature dependence of the explosion limits were investigated. Flash point and AIT(autoignition temperature) for cyclohexane were experimented. By using the literatures data, the lower and upper explosion limits of cyclohexane recommended 1.0 Vol% and 9.0 Vol%, respectively. Moreover lower flash points of cyclohexane recommended $-20^{\circ}C$. It was measured relationship between the AITs and the ignition delay times by using ASTM E659-78 apparatus for cyclohexane, and the experimental AIT was $255^{\circ}C$. The new equations for predicting the temperature dependence of the explosion limits of cyclohexane is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with the literature data.

The Study of Muscle Fatigue and Risks of Musculoskeletal System Disorders from Text Inputting on a Smartphone

  • Objective: This study aims to analyze and evaluate fatigue in upper trapezius muscles of adults when inputting text on a smart phone, thereby examining the risk of cumulative trauma disorders in the musculoskeletal system of the upper extremity. Method: Forty-five healthy adults were divided equally into three groups: a smartphone group, a notebook group, and a desktop group. A surface electromyogram was placed on the upper trapezius muscle of each participant, after which they inputted text for ten minutes within an ergonomic setting; their side posture was recorded on video and analyzed. Results: The spectral edge frequency values for the smartphone group, as recorded from the upper right trapezius muscles on the surface electromyogram, showed a significant decrease(p<.05). Regarding the RULA, all three groups had results indicating "action level 2". Conclusion: All three groups had results indicating "action level 2" according to the RULA, which means that additional research on the posture of the participants while performing tasks is necessary, and their posture needs to be corrected. In particular, the smartphone group has the highest levels of fatigue in the upper trapezius muscles, suggesting that the task of inputting text on a smartphone is a high risk for causing cumulative trauma disorders.

Electromyographic Analysis of Wrist Flexors by the Shape of Ultrasound Head (초음파 도자의 모양에 따른 손목굽힘근의 근전도 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate electromyographic activities of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) and the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) by the shape of the ultrasound head. Twelve healthy subjects participated and performed ultrasound therapy with a round head and a long handled head during each 5-minute application. Electromyographic activities of the FDS and FCU were recorded by surface electrodes and normalized by maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) values. There was no difference in the muscular fatigue of FDS and FCU as determined by the shape of the ultrasound head (p>.05). Without the shape of head, the mean power frequency decreased with the time. There also was no difference in %MVIC of the FDS and FCU as determined by the shape of the ultrasound head (p>.05), but the force exerted exceeded 20%MVIC. There was however a significant difference in the amount of cumulative workload of the FDS and FCU as determined by the shape of ultrasound head (p<.05). The workload was however not affected by the shape of the ultrasound head. Constant static grasp of ultrasound transducer head during ultrasound therapy is considered a high risk factor of work-related musculoskeletal disease.

The Development of a SVR-based Empirical Model for the Effect of the Unbalanced Floor Height on MVC of Lifting Task (불균형한 바닥높이가 들기 작업의 최대발휘근력에 미치는 영향 분석을 위한 SVR 예측모델 설계)

  • Low back pain is one of major issues in musculoskeletal diseases mainly caused by MMH (Manual Material Handling) tasks. In Korea, the standards of NIOSH(National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) Lift Equations in U. S. A. have been most widely used. However, there is no standard in case the height of one feet is higher than that of another one. Moreover, since the standards are developed in U. S. A., there are many limitations for the applicability of Korean workers. In this study, MVC(Maximum Voluntary Contraction) for four postures are measured and an empirical model based on SVR(Support Vector Regression) is constructed. Constructing SVR model, PSO(Particle Swarm Optimization) is employed to investigate the optimal parameters of SVR. The results show that the performance of this empirical model is approximately accurate, even if the deviation of experimental values is large due to the individual differences. This empirical model may contribute to establish the standards of MMH tasks in Korea.

Minimum Autoignition Temperature Behavior(MAITB) of the Flammable Binary Systems (가연성 이성분계의 최소자연발화온도 거동(MAITB))

  • The values of the AIT(Autoignition temperature) for fire and explosion protection are normally the lowest reported. The minimum autoignition temperature behavior(MAITB) of flammable liquid mixtures is exhibited when the AIT of mixture is below the AIT of the individual components. The MAITB is an interesting experimental features, which can be significant from the perspective of industrial safety. In this study, the AITs of m-xylene+n-butyric acid and ethylbenzene+n-butanol systems were measured using ASTM E659-78 apparatus. The AITs of m-xylene, n-butyric acid, ethylbenzene and n-butanol which constituted two binary systems were $587^{\circ}C$, $510^{\circ}C$, $475^{\circ}C$ and $340^{\circ}C$ respectively. The m-xylene+n-butyric acid system is exhibited MAITB at 0.3 mole fraction of m-xylene, and its minimum autoignition temperature was $460^{\circ}C$.

Prediction of Explosion Limits of Aldehydes Using Chemical Stoichiometric Coefficients and Heats of Combustion (연소열 및 화학양론계수를 이용한 알데히드류의 폭발한계의 예측)

  • The explosion limit is one of the major combustion properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. The explosion limit of aldehydes have been shown to be correlated the heat of combustion and the chemical stoichiometric coefficients. In this study, the lower explosion and upper explosion limits of aldehydes were predicted by using the heat of combustion and chemical stoichiometric coefficients. The values calculated by the proposed equations agreed with literature data above determination coefficient 0.99. From the given results, using the proposed methodology, it is possible to predict the explosion limits of the aldehydes.

Prediction of Lower Explosion Limits of Binary Liquid Mixtures by Means of Solution Thermodynamics (용액열역학에 의한 2성분계 혼합물의 폭발하한계 예측)

  • Low explosion limits of flammable liquid mixtures can be calculated with the appropriate use of the fundamental laws of Raoult, Dalton, Le Chatelier and activity coefficient models. In this paper, Raoult's law, van Laar equation and Wilson equation are shown to be applicable for the prediction of the lower explosion limits for ethylacetate+ethanol and ethanol+toluene systems. The calculated values based on Raoult's law were found to be better than those based on van Laar and Wilson equations.

The Flash Point Measurement for Binary Flammable Mixture (이성분계 가연성 혼합물의 인화점 측정)

  • The flash point is the major physical property used to characterize the fire hazard of flammable liquid solutions. In the present study, the main focus is on measuring and estimating the flash points for binary flammable mixture. The flash points for n-propanol+propionic acid were measured by Seta flash closed cup apparatus. The experimental data were correlated with the van Laar and NRTL equations through the optimization method. The results estimated by these correlations were compared with the values calculated by the method based on Raoult's law. The optimization method were found to be better than the method based on the Raoult's law.

An Experimental Study on Acute Toxicity of Benzo[a]pyrene (벤조피렌의 급성독성시험 연구)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to observe the toxicological changes caused by a single exposure to benzo[a]pyrene. Methods: Based on the results of a preliminary study, 300 mg/kg was set as the middle dose. A highest dose of 2,000 mg/kg and a lowest dose of 50 mg/kg were selected based on GHS guidelines. Benzo[a]pyrene was orally administered once to female and male SD rats at dose levels of 50, 300, and 2,000 mg/kg(body weight). All animals were monitored daily for clinical signs and mortality over 14 days. Hematological and biochemical values were examined as well. Results: There were neither dead animals nor significant changes in body weights during the experimental period. In addition, no differences were found between the control and treated groups in clinical sign, hematology, serum biochemical, and histopathological analysis. Conclusion: Compared with the control group, we could not detect any toxic alteration in all treated groups. These studies indicate that the acute toxicity of benzo[a]pyrene is relatively low.
