This work presents an IR-based system for parking assistance and obstacle detection in the automotive field that employs the Microsoft Kinect camera for fast 3D point cloud reconstruction. In contrast to previous research that attempts to explicitly identify obstacles, the proposed system aims to detect "reachable regions" of the environment, i.e., those regions where the vehicle can drive to from its current position. A user-friendly 2D traversability grid of cells is generated and used as a visual aid for parking assistance. Given a raw 3D point cloud, first each point is mapped into individual cells, then, the elevation information is used within a graph-based algorithm to label a given cell as traversable or non-traversable. Following this rationale, positive and negative obstacles, as well as unknown regions can be implicitly detected. Additionally, no flat-world assumption is required. Experimental results, obtained from the system in typical parking scenarios, are presented showing its effectiveness for scene interpretation and detection of several types of obstacle.
In this paper, the method for navigation and obstacle avoidance of an autonomous mobile robot is proposed. It is based on the fuzzy inference system which enables to deal with imprecise and uncertain information, and on the neural network which enables to learn input and output pattern data obtained from ultrasonic sensors. For autonomous navigation, the wall-following navigation utilizing input and output data by an expert's control action is constructed. An approach by the neural network is developed for the obstacle avoidance because of the redundant input data. For an autonomous navigation, the fuzzy control and the control of the neural network are integrated and its feasibility is demonstrated by means of experiment.
A new approach based on artificial potential function is proposed for the obstacle avoidance of redundant manipulators. Unlike the so-called "global" path planning method, which requires expensive computation for the path search before the manipulator starts to move, this new approach, "local" path planning, researches the path in real-time using the local distance information. Previous use of artificial potential function has exhibited local minima in some complex environments. This thesis proposes a potential function that has no local minima even for a cluttered environment. This potential function has been implemented for the collision avoidance of a redundant robot in Simulation. The simulation also employ an algorithm that eliminates collisions with obstacles by calculating the repulsive potential exerted on links, based on the shortest distance to object.
In this paper, we implemented the electornic moving aid system for safe walking of the blind. An obstacle detecting of each sector used ultrasound and a distance measurement used time of flight. The alarm is designed to have a sound and a tactile function that can be selected on an user's convenience. This system can detect and obstacle of upward, forward, downward and optimally warn to the blind with vibration, beep sound by appling warning algorithm on object detection. Experimental testing and performance evaluation have been successfully carried out with a prototype cane, and the experiment shows the capability of the function to detect unknown objects within an assigned distance, under knees, over head height, and crushed puddles.

In this paper, the method for an effective and intelligent route decision of the automatic ground vehicle (AGV) using a 2D spatial map of the stereo camera system is proposed. The depth information and disparity map are detected in the inputting images of a parallel stereo camera. The distance between the automatic moving robot and the obstacle detected and the 2D spatial map obtained from the location coordinates, and then the relative distance between the obstacle and the other objects obtained from them. The AGV moves automatically by effective and intelligent route decision using the obtained 2D spatial map. From some experiments on robot driving with 480 frames of the stereo images, it is analyzed that error ratio between the calculated and measured values of the distance between the objects is found to be very low value of 1.57% on average, respectably.

This paper is concerned with stereo vision-based approach to detect obstacles and to generate the path of destination from the start. The hexapod robot in the experiment is cable of walking by legs and driving by wheels simultaneously. The hexapod robot operates under the driving mode normally, and it changes driving mode to walking mode to overcome obstacles using its legs. Disparity map, which is the correlation between two images taken by stereo camera, is employed for calculation of the distance between the robot and obstacles. When the obstacles information is extracted from the disparity map, the potential field algorithm is applied to create the obstacle-avoidance path. Simulator, based on OpenGL, is developed to generate the graphical path, and the experimental results are shown for the verification of the proposed algorithm.

A novel real-time path planning algorithm suitable for implementation on a small mobile robot is introduced. The algorithm can be used as the basis for mapping unknown or partially known environments and is tested in a specially developed simulation environment in Matlab(R). Simulations results are presented demonstrating that the algorithm can readily be implemented to allow a small robot to navigate in various unknown and partially known environments. The main characteristics of the algorithm include simplicity, ease of implementation, speed, and efficiency, thereby being especially suitable for small robots. Furthermore, for partially known environments, another algorithm is proposed to predefine an optimal path taking into account information provided regarding the environment.

This paper describes a device platform which the blind can wear to keep path and to get surrounding information during their independent walking. Compared to the existing technologies, the proposed device could be used indoors and outdoors, and maps need not be provided in advance. It is composed of a glasses type device equipped with image sensors, and a portable device that analyzes sensor data for sighted guiding. RGB images and depth images are extracted to generate a walking map based on feature points. It also can cope with the risk of collision with bollard, color cone by applying vertical obstacle detection technology based on floor detection.

The acts of biological immune system are similar to the navigation for autonomous mobile robots under dynamically changing environments. In recent years, many researchers have studied navigation algorithms using artificial immune networks. Conventional artificial immune algorithms consist of an obstacle-avoidance behavior and a goal-reaching behavior. To select a proper action, the navigation algorithm should combine the obstacle-avoidance behavior with the goal-reaching behavior. In this paper, the neural network is employed to combine the behaviors. The neural network is trained with the surrounding information. the outputs of the neural network are proper combinational weights of the behaviors in real-time. Also, a velocity control algorithm is constructed with the artificial immune network. Through a simulation study and experimental results for a autonomous mobile robot, we have shown the validity of the proposed navigation algorithm.
