  • Transverse steel bars are used in the plastic hinge zone of columns to insure adequate confinement, prevention of longitudinal bar buckling and ductile behavior. Fabrication and placement of rectangular hoops and cross-ties in columns are difficult to construct and require larger amount of transverse steels. In this paper, to solve these problems, the new lateral confinement method using oblong hoop is proposed for the transverse confinement of columns of the oblong cross-section and flared column. The experimental study for octagonal oblong cross-section was carried out by the flared columns test in strong axis. The lateral confinement method using proposed oblong hoop detail showed satisfactory performance of lateral confinement. Therefore it can be the alternative for oblong cross-section and flared column with improved workability and cost-efficiency.

  • Transverse steel bars are used in the plastic hinge zone of columns to insure adequate confinement, prevention of longitudinal bar buckling and ductile behavior. Fabrication and placement of rectangular hoops and cross-ties in columns are difficult to construct. Details of reinforcement for rectangular section require a lot of rectangular hoops and cross-ties. In this paper, to solve these problems, the new lateral confinement method using oblong hoop is proposed for the transverse confinement of the flared column. It can be the alternative for oblong cross-section and flared column with improved workability and cost-efficiency. The final objectives of this study are to suggest appropriate oblong hoop details and to provide quantitative reference data and tendency for seismic performance or damage assessment based on the drift levels such as residual deformation, elastic strain energy. This paper describes factors of seismic performance such as ultimate displacement/drift ratio, displacement ductility, response modification factor, equivalent viscous damping ratio and effective stiffness.

  • The objectives of this study were to provide experimental data on the behavior of interlocking spiral columns under cyclic loading, to compare the performance of columns with interlocking spirals to columns with U-type hoops with hook, to study the flexural detailing of interlocking spirals and other transverse steel configurations as the transverse reinforcement The oblong columns with interlocking spirals and with hooked U-type hoops and cross-ties better seismic performance than the rectangular columns with rectangular hoops and cross-ties. The oblong columns with hooked U-type hoops and cross-ties showed better seismic performance than the rectangular columns with rectangular hoops and cross-ties. And this research were to make recommendations for the design of bridge columns incorporating interlocking spirals and U-type hoops with hook as the transverse reinforcement.

  • The experimental study for oblong section was carried out by the column test in weak axis. The column specimens had 3 types of transverse steel configurations, such as interlocking spirals, interlocking circular hoop ties and rectangular ties. The oblong columns with interlocking spirals and with interlocking circular hoop ties showed better seismic performance than the rectangular columns with rectangular hoops and cross-ties. The objectives of this study were to provide experimental data on the behavior of interlocking spiral columns under cyclic loading, to compare the performance of columns with interlocking spirals to columns with various transverse steel configurations, to study the flexural detailing of interlocking spirals, interlocking circular hoops, and other transverse steel configurations as the transverse reinforcement, and to make recommendations for the design of bridge columns incorporating interlocking spirals, circular hoops as the transverse reinforcement.

  • A comparative anatomical and ultrastructural study was undertaken to investigare on the leaf epidermis by light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). On the basis of results from this study, it was grasped major characters of taxa and variation range of each character on the level of species, section and subgenus respectively. The shape of leaf epidermal cell was oblong to linear, which was varied by each taxon. Epidermal cell of taxa in sects. Microscordum, Anguinum, and Rhizirideum, which had wide leaf blade, oblong instead of linear shape in others examined taxa in this study. The leaf of taxa in sect. Anguinum was hypostomatic, while the rest of taxa had amphistomatic leaf. This was also one of characters which could discriminate taxa of sect. Anguinum from others. The guard cell in investigated taxa had not so much variation in the respect of its size. The number of stomata per unit area reduced by increasing size of epidermal cell, the fewest number of stomata per unit area was found in the taxa of sect. Anguinum. The type of stomatal apparatus of observed all taxa was anomocytic. It was found to know ultrastructural variation in the epidermal cell, like as patterns of sculpture on the cell wall, and features of deposition of wax by SEM. There were no depositions of wax in the taxa of sect. Microscordum and Anguinum, but fine thread-like structures which were parallel or cross to axis was found on the surface of epidermal cell respectively. The patterns of sculpture on the cell were prominent straight in sects. Recticulato-bulbosa and Rhizirideum, discontinuous line in the sect. Oreiprason. The epicuticular wax had been deposited on the surface of its epidermal cell in all taxa except sects. Microscordum and Anguinum.
