  • In this paper, we present a conversion algorithm of the oblique ionogram obtained from Jeju and Icheon to the equivalent vertical ionogram of the path mid-point, based on some equivalence theorems between the vertical sounding and the oblique sounding for the ionosphere. And in order to verify the conversion algorithm under the condition of no vertical ionosonde at the mid-point on the test path, the equivalent vertical ionograms are compared to the real vertical ionograms measured adjacently in space-time. The comparison results show that the conversion algorithm performs well for the short-path oblique ionogram and the equivalent vertical ionograms could be applied to get the electron density profiles at the mid-point.

  • Statement of problem: Currently, there are some 20 different geometric variations in implant/abutment interface available. The geometry is important because it is one of the primary determinants of joint strength, joint stability, locational and rotational stability. Purpose: As the effects of the various implant-abutment connections and the prosthesis height variation on stress distribution are not yet examined this study is to focus on the different types of implant-abutment connection and the prosthesis height using three dimensional finite element analysis. Material and method. The models were constructed with ITI, 3i TG, Bicon, Frialit-2 fixtures and solid abutment, TG post, Bicon post, EstheticBase abutment respectively. And the super structures were constructed as mandibular second premolar shapes with 8.5 mm, 11 mm, 13.5 mm of crown height. In each model, 244 N of vertical load and 244 N of $30^{\circ}$ oblique load were placed on the central pit of an occlusal surface. von Mises stresses were recorded and compared in the crowns, abutments, fixtures. Results: 1. Under the oblique loading, von Mises stresses were larger in the crown, abutment, fixture compared to the vertical loading condition. 2. The stresses were increased proportionally to the crown height under oblique loading but showed little differences with three different crown heights under vertical loading. 3. In the crown, the highest stress areas were loading points under vertical loading, and the finish lines under oblique loading. 4. Under the oblique loading, the higher stresses were located in the fixture/abutment interface of the Bicon and Frialit-2 systems compared to the ITI and TG systems. Conclusions: The stress distribution patterns of each implant-abutment system had difference among them and adequate crown height/implant ratio was important to reduce the stresses around the implants.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine EMG activities and VMO/VL ratio of the vastus medialis oblique, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris during squat exercise (knee angle: 15, 45, and 60 degrees; tibial rotation: internal rotation, neutral, and external rotation). Methods: Twelve subjects performed squat exercise at each knee angle and tibial rotation while electromyographic (EMG) activity was collected. Statistical analysis consisted of two-way repeated measures analysis of variance with post hoc analysis. Results: There were significant main effects of knee angles and foot positions and interaction effect on EMG activities of vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis. VMO/VL ratios were significantly different by tibial rotations and there was an interaction effect. A neutral position produced significantly more VMO/VL activity ratio than that from internally rotated position and externally rotated position at 60 degrees. Conclusion: Considering the interaction effects for EMG activity across quadriceps muscles tested, the 60 degrees knee angle with a neutral foot position may provide the most effective condition for patients with acute patellofemoral syndrome.

  • PURPOSE. Four and six implant-supported fixed full-arch prostheses with various framework materials were assessed under different loading conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In the edentulous maxilla, the implants were positioned in a configuration of four to six implant modalities. CoCr, Ti, ZrO2, and PEEK materials were used to produce the prosthetic structure. Using finite element stress analysis, the first molar was subjected to a 200 N axial and 45° oblique force. Stresses were measured on the bone, implants, abutment screw, abutment, and prosthetic screw. The Von Mises, maximum, and minimum principal stress values were calculated and compared. RESULTS. The maximum and minimum principal stresses in bone were determined as CoCr < ZrO2 < Ti < PEEK. The Von Mises stresses on the implant, implant screw, abutment, and prosthetic screws were determined as CoCr < ZrO2 < Ti < PEEK. The highest Von Mises stress was 9584.4 Mpa in PEEK material on the prosthetic screw under 4 implant-oblique loading. The highest maximum principal stress value in bone was found to be 120.89 Mpa, for PEEK in 4 implant-oblique loading. CONCLUSION. For four and six implant-supported structures, and depending on the loading condition, the system accumulated different stresses. The distribution of stress was reduced in materials with a high elastic modulus. When choosing materials for implant-supported fixed prostheses, it is essential to consider both the number of implants and the mechanical and physical attributes of the framework material.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the conditions for the application of various plank exercises to people who require trunk stabilization by comparing trunk muscle activity according to the degree of hip abduction in the plank exercise. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty healthy participants voluntarily participated in this study and the plank exercise was performed under 5 conditions (two-legged support plank [TSP] with hip abduction, TSP with hip abduction of 15 degrees, TSP with hip abduction of 30, one-legged support plank [OSP] with hip abduction of 15 degrees, OSP with hip abduction of 30 degrees). In order to measure the trunk muscle activity according to the 5 conditions, surface electromyography was used. The electrical activities of the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), and internal oblique (IO) muscles were measured during the 5 plank exercises. Subjects practiced each of the 5 conditions three times in random order and the average values were obtained. Results: In the OSP condition with 15/30 degrees of hip abduction, activities of the RA, EO, and IO were significantly greater than during the TSP (p<0.05). In the OSP with 30 degrees of hip abduction condition, activities of the left EO, IO were significantly greater than other plank exercise conditions (p<0.05). Conclusions: The plank exercise with hip abduction of 30 degrees and the OSP exercise can be suggested as an effective method to enhance the activity of the trunk oblique muscles.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the trunk and lower extremity muscle activity induced by three different intensity conditions (intensity 1, 3, 5) of whole body vibration (WBV) during bridging exercise. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to measure trunk and lower extremity muscles activity. Eleven healthy young subjects (6 males, 5 females) were recruited from university students. The collected EMG data were normalized using reference contraction (no vibration during bridging) and expressed as a percentage of reference voluntary contraction. To analyze the differences in EMG data, the repeated one-way analysis of variance was used. A Bonferroni's correction was used for multiple comparisons. The study showed that EMG activity of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, erector spinae and rectus femoris muscles was not significantly different among three intensity conditions of WBV during bridging exercise (p>.05). However, there were significantly increased EMG activity of the medial hamstring muscle (p=.001) and medial gastrocnemius muscle (p=.027) in the intensity 3 condition compared with the intensity 1 condition. This result can be interpreted that vibration was absorbed through the distal muscles, plantar flexor and knee flexor.

  • Purpose: This study was to propose the clear understanding for stress distribution of supporting bone by use of staggered buccal offset tripodal placement of fixtures of posterior 3 crown implant partial dentures. We realized posterior 3 crown implant fixed partial dentures through finite element modeling and analysed stress effect of implant arrangement location to supporting bone under external load using finite element method. Method: To understand stress distribution of 3 crown implant fixed partial dentures which have 2 different arrangement by finite element analysis. In each model, for loading condition, we applied $45^{\circ}$ oblique load to occlusal surface of crown and applied 100 N for 3 crown individually(total 300 N) for imitating possible oral loading condition. at this time, we calculated Von Mises stress distribution in supporting bone through finite element method. Result: When apply $45^{\circ}$ oblique load to in-line arrangement model, maximum stress result for 100 N for each 3 crown 47.566MPa. In tripodal placement, result for 1mm buccal offset tripodal placement implant model was maximum distributed load 51.418MPa, so result was higher than in-line arrangement model. Conclusion: In stress distribution result by placement of implant fixture, the most effective structure was in-line arrangement. The tripodal placement does not effective for stress distribution, gap cause more damage to supporting bone.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of three different oblique mechanical loading to occlusal surfaces of posterior implant partial dentures on the stress distributions in surrounding bone, using 3-dimensional finite element method. A 3-dimensional finite element model of a posterior implant partial dentures composed of three unit implants, simplified 3 gold alloy crown and supporting bone was developed according to the design of AVANA self tapping implant for this study. Three kinds of surface distributed oblique loads(300 N) are applied to following occlusal surfaces in the three crowns; 1) All occlusal surfaces in the three crown(load of 300 N was shared to three crown), 2) Occlusal surface of centered crown (load of 300 N was applied to a centered crown), 3) Occlusal surface of proximal crown(load of 300 N was applied to a distal proximal crown). In the results, 141 MPa of maximum von Mises stress was calculated at third loading condition and 98 MPa of minimum von Mises stress was calculated at first loading condition. From the results, location and type of occlusive loading conditions are important for the safety of supporting bone.

  • Based on the boundary element method, the motion responses and transmission coefficients of a moored floating breakwater were investigated in oblique waves. To satisfy the outgoing radiation condition in the far field, the fluid domain was divided into inner and outer regions. The complete solution could be obtained by applying the matching conditions between the eigenfunction-based outer solution and BEM-based inner solution. Using the developed predictive tools, the wave exciting forces, added mass, damping coefficients, motion responses, and transmission coefficients were assessed for various combinations of breakwater configuration, wave heading, mooring cables properties, and wave characteristics. It was found that the transmission coefficient for a moored floating breakwater was closely dependent on the motion responses, which were greatly amplified at the resonant frequencies.

  • A numerical study is carried out to investigate the transient process of combustion phenomena associated with hypersonic propulsion devices. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations for reactive flows are used as governing equations with a detailed chemistry mechanism of hydrogen-air mixture and two-equation SST turbulence modeling. The governing equations are discretized by a high order accurate upwind scheme and solved in a fully coupled manner with a fully implicit time accurate method. At first, oscillating shock-induced combustion is analyzed and the comparison with experimental result gives the validity of present computational modeling. Secondly, the model ram accelerator experiment was simulated and the results show the detailed transient combustion mechanisms. Thirdly, the evolution of oblique detonation wave is simulated and the result shows transient and final steady state behavior at off-stability condition. Finally, shock wave/boundary layer interaction in combustible mixture is studied and the criterion of boundary layer flame and oblique detonation wave is identified.
