  • Atypical facial pain (AFP) is a type of facial pain which does not fulfill any other diagnosis. It has several features such as no objective signs, no obvious explanation of the cause and poor response to treatments. We report a case of a female patient with AFP on the left maxillary area. The pain was increased by cold innocuous stimulation and thermography showed that the temperature on the painful area was significantly decreased. The pain was successfully alleviated by stellate ganglion block (SGB). Therefore, SGB can be effectively used to treat AFP.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze the small animal patients treated by Oriental medicine and develop the treatment strategies for small animal patients. Methods : 58 cases of small animal patients treated in the department of integrated medicine, Veterinary Medical Center, University of Minnesota, USA, from Jan 1 2003 to Aug 30 2003 were surveyed. Results : 1. The number of dog patients was more than that of cat patients and the female patients were more than the male patients. 2. The highest incidence was shown in the age of 6 to 15 on dogs and 11 to 15 on cats, respectively. 3. The number of patients via other hospital was as much as that of the first visitor to this department. 4. The most frequent disease was the musculoskeletal problems in dog patients and the internal medicine problems in cats patients. 5. The improvement rate was 85% in dogs and 86% in cats, respectively. Conclusions: Oriental medicine is supposed to be effective on relieving the symptoms and signs in small animal patients.

  • Chronic abdominal pain, defined as long-lasting intermittent or constant abdominal pain, is a common pediatric problem encountered by primary care physicians and medical subspecialists. Chronic abdominal pain in children is usually functional, i.e., without objective evidence of an underlying organic disorder. Functional abdominal pain is categorized as functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, functional abdominal pain, abdominal migraine, and aerophagia according to the Rome II criteria for pediatric functional gastrointestinal disorders. There is insufficient evidence to state that the nature of abdominal pain or the presence of associated symptoms can discriminate between functional and organic disorders. The presence of alarming symptoms or signs, such as weight loss, gastrointestinal bleeding, persistent fever, and chronic severe diarrhea, is associated with a higher prevalence of organic disease. Most children with chronic abdominal pain are unlikely to require diagnostic testing; such children often need pharmacologic and behavioral therapy.

  • In this paper, we propose a new framework for anomaly detection in medical wireless sensor networks, which are used for remote monitoring of patient vital signs. The proposed framework performs sequential data analysis on a mini gateway used as a base station to detect abnormal changes and to cope with unreliable measurements in collected data without prior knowledge of anomalous events or normal data patterns. The proposed approach is based on the Mahalanobis distance for spatial analysis, and a kernel density estimator for the identification of abnormal temporal patterns. Our main objective is to distinguish between faulty measurements and clinical emergencies in order to reduce false alarms triggered by faulty measurements or ill-behaved sensors. Our experimental results on both real and synthetic medical datasets show that the proposed approach can achieve good detection accuracy with a low false alarm rate (less than 5.5%).

  • The main gate of a university is a element of landscape which improves the quality of campus as well as demarcates the boundary and publicizes the image of university. Therefore, each university strives to differentiate its main gate from that of other universities with a unique form. This research investigates the signs and symbols shown at the university's main gate of 18 universities in Korea, and also presents useful design tips with the objective of bearing the spirit of the campus and its founding ideology. The results of this research as follows: Icons of Sign for 18 universities can be classified into five separate categories: things, human, animal, character, and metaphor. Examples of the 'things' icons include a pen nib, the sun, the cross, a big bell, and so on. Also, the meaning of the represented symbols can be grouped in three separate categories: university's development, contribution to society, and mining of knowledge. From the three category, university development symbol is the most likely to be used.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the safety test for propolis in Beagle based on blood count, serum biochemistry, and electrolyte. Total six beagle dogs were assigned to this experiment. To investigate the safety of propolis in beagle dogs, we performed oral administration of propolis (5%) for 8 weeks. Among six beagles, three beagle dogs were randomly allocated to the control group which were fed only regular fodder, and the other three dogs were assigned as the treatment group which were fed regular fodder and propolis (5%). No clinical signs were observed in neither group throughout the experimental period. During the experimental period, there were no significant change in feed intake, water consumption, and body condition. Also, there were no statistically significant differences in hematological and biochemical analyses between the control group and the treated group. Our safety study showed that oral consumption of propolis did not cause any toxicological effects in beagle dogs.

  • The objective of this study was to establish a systematic ergonomic program for the prevention and control of work-related musculoskeletal disorders(WMSDs) in a machinery manufacturing company. The steps such as looking for the signs of WMSDs problems, setting the stage for action, training-building in-house expertise, gathering and examining the evidence of WMSDS, developing controls of health care management, and proactive ergonomic interventions were applied. The primary success factors were management commitment and encouragement, and harmonious union-management relations.

  • Small-fiber neuropathy (SFN) is a common clinical problems. The disorder is a generalized peripheral polyneuropathy that selectively involves small-diameter myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers. It is often idiopathic and typically presents with painful feet in patients over the age of 60. And autoimmune mechanisms are often suspected, but rarely identified. The clinical features consisted of painful dysesthesias and postganglionic sympathetic dysfunction, as well as reduced pinprick and temperature sensation. Although affected patients complain of neuropathic pain, this condition is often difficult to diagnose because of the few objective physical signs and normal nerve conduction studies. Diagnosis of SFN is made on the basis of the clinical features, normal nerve conduction studies, and abnormal specialized tests of small fiber function. These specialized studies include assessment of epidermal nerve fiber density as well as sudomotor, quantitative sensory, and cardiovagal testing. Unless an underlying disease is identified, treatment is usually directed toward alleviation of neuropathic pain.

  • The objective of this research is to utilize the ultrasonic method to analyze the property of partial discharge (PD) which is generated by the winding of the insulation stator in the generator. Therefore, a PD measurement system is built based on ultrasonic and virtual instruments. Three types of PD models (internal PD model, surface PD model and slot PD model) have been constructed. With the analysis of these experimental results, this research has identified the ultrasonic signals of the discharges which were produced by three types of PD models. This analysis shows the different features among these PD types. Both the time domain and frequency domain of the ultrasonic signals are obviously different. In addition, an experiment based on a large rotating machine has been done to analyze ultrasonic noises. The result indicates that the ultrasonic noises can be wiped off by the filters and algorithms. The application of this system is convenient for the detection of early signs of insulation failure, which is an effective method for diagnosis of insulation faults.
