  • Objective : The secondary verification of Leksell Gamma Knife treatment planning system (LGP) (which is the primary verification system) is extremely important in order to minimize the risk of treatment errors. Although prior methods have been developed to verify maximum dose and treatment time, none have studied maximum dose coordinates and treatment volume. Methods : We simulated the skull shape as an ellipsoid with its center at the junction between the mammillary bodies and the brain stem. The radiation depths of the beamlets emitted from 201 collimators were calculated based on the relationship between this ellipsoid and a single beamlet expressed as a straight line. A computer program was coded to execute the algorithm. A database system was adopted to log the doses for $31{\times}31{\times}31$ or 29,791 matrix points allowing for future queries to be made of the matrix of interest. Results : When we compared the parameters in seven patients, all parameters showed good correlation. The number of matrix points with a dose higher than 30% of the maximal dose was within ${\pm}\;2%$ of LGP. The 50% dose volume, which is generally the target volume, differs maximally by 4.2%. The difference of the maximal dose ranges from 0.7% to 7%. Conclusion : Based on the results, the variable ellipsoid modeling technique or variable ellipsoid modeling technique (VEMT) can be a useful and independent tool to verify the important parameters of LGP and make up for LGP.

  • The amount of spent fuel from nuclear power plants has been increasing. An effective management plan of the spent fuel becomes a critical issue, because the storage capacity of each plant will reach its storage limit in a few years. The volume of high toxic spent fuel can be reduced through a fuel processing. Advanced Fuel Cycle (AFC) system is considered to be one of the options to reduce the toxicity and volume of the spent fuel. It is necessary to set up a test facility to demonstrate the feasibility of the process at the engineering scale. The objective of the work is a development of the safety evaluation technology for the AFC system. The evaluation technology of the AFC structural integrity and processes were surveyed and reviewed. Key evaluation parameters for the main processes such as electrolytic reduction, electrorefining, and electrowinning were obtained. The survey results may be used for the establishment of the AFC regulatory licensing procedure. The establishment of the licensing criteria minimizes the trials and errors of the AFC facility design. Issues taken from the survey on the regulatory procedure and design safety features for the AFC facility provide a chance to resolve potential issues in advance.

  • It is often believed that a more complex water quality model is better able to simulate reality. The more complex a model, however, the more parameters are involved thus increases the cost and uncertainty of modeling processes. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of two steady-state river water quality models, QUAL2E and QUAL-NIER, that have different complexity. QUAL-NIER is recently developed by National Institute of Environmental Research aiming to enhance the simulation capability of QUAL2E for eutrophic rivers. It is a carbon based model that considers different forms, such as dissolved versus particulate and labile versus refractory, of carbon and nutrients, and the contribution of autochthonous loading due to algal metabolism. The models were simultaneously applied to Nakdong River and their performance was evaluated by statistical verification with field data. Both models showed similar performance and satisfactorily replicated the longitudinal variations of BOD, T-N, T-P, Chl.a concentrations along the river. The algal blooms occurred at the stagnant reaches of downstream were also reasonably captured by the models. Although QUAL-NIER somewhat reduced the magnitude of errors, the hypothesis tests revealed no statistical evidence to justify its better performance. The contribution of autochthonous carbon and nutrient load by algal metabolism was insignificant because the hydraulic retention time is relatively short compare to the time scale of kinetic reactions. The results imply that the kinetic processes included in QUAL-NIER are too complex for the nature and scale of the real processes involved, thus needs to be optimized for improving the modeling efficiency.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate an application of stochastic continuous storage function model with ensemble Kalman filter technique. The case study is performed at the upstream basin of Jibo streamflow gauge including Andong and Imha dam. Test period is for the rainy season during 2006 and 2007. Long term runoff analysis is feasible in the case of using deterministic model. Ensemble members for input data and parameters are generated using Monte Carlo simulation for the purpose of applying ensemble Kalman filter technique. The cumulative absolute errors of stochastic model to the deterministic one are improved for the amount of 17.5 %, 18.3 % and more than 40.0 % for Andong dam, Imha dam and Jibo station, respectively. The results indicate that the stochastic model improves the accuracy of the simulated discharge considerably.

  • The main objective of this study is to examine the adaptability for the large watershed of the storage tank model which can be applied for the analysis of both long and short terms runoff developed on the basis of hydrologic data for a smaH mountaineous watershed. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows ; 1. Areal rainfalls of the Dae Chong watershed were calculated by Thiessen method composed of 9 Thiessen networks. 2. Optimal parameters for two types, Model A and Model B of tank models were derived through calibration procedure by standardized Powell method. 3. Monthly simulated flows of Model B are seemed to be closer to the monthly observed than those of Model A during calibration period in the long terms runoff. 4. Relative errors for the simulated flood flows of Model B were apperaed as lower percentage to the observed than those of Model A during calibration period in the short terms runoff. 5. Daily simulated hydrographs of Model B are seemed to be closer to the daily observed than those of Model A during verification period in the long terms runoff. Significance of Model B was highly acknowledged in comparison with Model A in the correlation analysis between annual observed and annual simulated runoff. 6. Reproducibility of simulated flows for Model B is generally seemed to be better than that of Model A during calibration period in the short terms runoff. 7. It can be concluded that reproducibility of Model B is superior to that of Model A in the long and short terms runoff even a large watershed like the result of the small one. 8. It was verified that adaptability for the large watershed of Model B is superior to that of Model A between the two models which were developed by a small watershed characteristics for both long and short terms runoff. 9. Further study for getting a suitable tank model is desirable to be established by the decision, calibration method of initial parameters of tank model and by additional application of another watershed with different watersheds and meterological characteristics.

  • Stable-state behaviors of asynchronous sequential machines represented as finite state machines can be corrected by feedback control schemes. In this paper, we propose a state feedback control scheme for input/state asynchronous machines with uncertain transitions. The considered asynchronous machine is deterministic, but its state transition function is partially known due to model uncertainty or inner logic errors. The control objective is to compensate the behavior of the closed-loop system so that it matches a sub-behavior of a prescribed model despite uncertain transitions. Furthermore, during the execution of corrective action, the controller reflects the exact knowledge of transitions into the next step, i.e., the range of the behavior of the closed-loop system can be enlarged through learning. The design procedure for the proposed controller is described in a case study.

  • In the initial design stage, the geometry of systems needs to be optimized regarding its performance. However, performance analysis is very time-consuming. Therefore, optimization becomes difficult/impossible problems because we need to evaluate the system performance for alternative design cases. To overcome this problem, many researchers perform prediction of system performance using the approximation model. The response surface method (RSM) is typically used to predict the system performance in the various research fields, but it presents prediction errors for highly nonlinear systems. The major objective of this paper is to propose a proper prediction method for marine system problems. Case studies of marine systems (the substructure of a floating offshore wind turbine considering hydrodynamic performance and bulk carrier bottom stiffened panels considering structure performance) verify that the proposed method is applicable to performance prediction in marine systems.

  • This study proposes severity analysis for pedestrian accidents by improving variables which were used for general severity analysis. The existing variables were collected based on the interviews with policeman or witnesses and evidence of accidents. Therefore, existing variables were subjective and had several measurement errors. In order to improve such problems, this study collected variables from vehicle recorder of taxi which recorded the moment of accidents. As a result, explanatory power of independent variables was enhanced and the complete objective variables could be collected. After collecting variables, ordered probit model was developed by utilizing vehicle recorder database. Fitness of ordered probit model was 0.23. Vehicle speed and pedestrian's eye direction variables were the most critical factors for severity of pedestrian accident. In addition, severity analysis for vulnerable pedestrian was carried out. As a result, it was revealed that vehicle speed, pedestrian's eye direction and safety zone variables affected the severity of pedestrian accidents most. Particularly, vehicle speed variable is the most important factor. Consequently, driver's defensive driving and compliance to the regulations are the priority to reduce severity of pedestrian accidents and prevent pedestrian accident.
