  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the blood concentrations of lipids, insulin and ascorbic acid, and their correlations in obese college men in Gyeongnam area. The blood pressure was significantly higher (p<0.001) in the obese group($127.8{\pm}7.2/86.7{\pm}9.2\;mmHg$) than the control group($112.8{\pm}6.6/71.9{\pm}6.6\;mmHg$). The serum triglyceride (p<0.01), total cholesterol (p<0.01), LDL-cholesterol (p<0.05), insulin (p<0.001) concentrations and atherogenic index (AI) (p<0.001) were significantly higher in the obese group ($158.8{\pm}79.7\;{\mu}U/L$, $185.0{\pm}26.8\;{\mu}U/L$, $111.9{\pm}28.1\;{\mu}U/L$, $15.2{\pm}5.6\;{\mu}U/L$, $3.6{\pm}1.0$) than the control group($111.9{\pm}35.8\;{\mu}U/L$, $165.9{\pm}19.4\;{\mu}U/L$, $97.0{\pm}16.4\;{\mu}U/L$, $8.9{\pm}4.4\;{\mu}U/L$, $2.6{\pm}0.3$), but HDL-cholesterol concentration was significantly higher (p<0.01) in the control group($46.5{\pm}7.2\;{\mu}U/L$) than the obese group($41.3{\pm}6.9\;{\mu}U/L$). On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the plasma ascorbic acid concentration in both groups. The ascorbic acid concentration was negatively correlated with total cholesterol level in the control group, and with triglyceride, total cholesterol levels and diastolic blood pressure in the obese group (p<0.05). These data show that young adult obesity might be related to hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis, hypertension and diabetes mellitus, and that the nutrition of ascorbic acid is more important for obese males than normal weight males.

  • This study investigates the progress of obesity in men from childhood to adulthood, by analyzing the measurement references from the 5th Size Korea. It also seeks to analyze the characteristics of obese figures through the comparison of body proportions to normal-weight people, to provide a basic reference for the development of new size categories and improved pattern grading. The age range is divided into three groups: children (2-7), teenagers (13-18), and adults (19-39). The results of research into the characteristics of body proportions of obese figures and the classification of different figure groups of obese people are as follows. The ratio between width and circumference for each part of the body was investigated according to body weight that was grouped into three different categories of low, normal, and obese body weights. The result demonstrated that in all the ranges of age, the obese groups had the lowest ratio between width and circumference in having a thick body shape. According to the results that compared the ratio of the circumference of each body part divided by the waist circumference, the obese group showed a low ratio that indicates that they have a bigger waist circumference than other parts of the body. Two factors are identified as contributing to obesity in analyzing the ratio of the circumference of body parts divided by waist circumference. Using the factor loadings of the upper and lower body obesity, a cluster analysis was carried out and three different categories of obesity were defined; lower body obesity, abdominal obesity, and upper body obesity. The obese groups of children and teenagers were mostly in body shape with lower obesity and abdominal obesity, whereas the adults group showed the obesity present in the upper body obesity that have fewer cases in lower body obesity.

  • Purpose : This study was conducted to apply a 12-week resistance exercise program to obese elderly people with sarcopenia and verify the risk factors of sarcopenia and metabolic syndrome as well as the effects of this program on improving muscle function, and thus to serve as basic data for preventing and improving sarcopenia. Methods : Forty elderly people aged 65 or older were recruited and underwent dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Based on the criteria of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM/Height2: less than 5.4 kg/m2) and body fat percentage (at least 30 % for women and 25 % for men), 18 obese elderly people with sarcopenia were finally selected after excluding 22 elderly people who did not meet the criteria. Variables related to sarcopenia, metabolic syndrome, and muscle function were measured before the 12-week resistance exercise program. Results : The 12-week resistance exercise program significantly increased the bone density and muscle mass and decreased the fat mass and fat percentage in obese elderly with sarcopenia. The 12-week resistance exercise program significantly increased the HDL-C and decreased the LDL-C and waist circumference in obese elderly people with sarcopenia (p<.05). The 12-week resistance exercise program significantly increase grip strength, static balance, and 6-minute walking in obese elderly people with sarcopenia (p<.05). Conclusion : Accordingly, resistance exercise is considered a way to reduce the exorbitant medical expenses of patients who are bedridden for long and improve the lowered quality of individuals in a super-aged society.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate eating behavior, nutritional status and health condition of obese adult attending a weight control exercise. The subjects of this study consisted of 81 adult in some areas of Daegu. Their weight, height, triceps, midarm circumference were measured and their dietary intake and eating behavior were obtained by using questionnaires. Anthropometry was conducted to determine obesity. Average age of men and women were 38.1 and 35.2 years old respectively. Their intake of energy and protein were 69.5% and 97.4% of RDA respectively. Energy intake of normal and obese group was 74.4% and 64.9% of RDA respectively. Protein intake of normal and obese group was 99.7% and 95.3% of RDA respectively There was a negative correlation between PIBW and energy intake, PIBW and carbohydrate intake, BMI and energy intake, and BMI and carbohydrate intake. A relative magnitude of factors affecting weight decrease rate was analyzed by Stepwise multiple regression analysis. Overall results about relative influence of independent variables to dependent variable(weight decrease rate) indicated that the BMI(p<0.01) was the most significantly correlated with weight decrease rate in all subjects. The results of this study suggest that the extensive nutrition education in weight control program should be emphasized to prevent obesity early.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine effects of sarcopenic obesity on metabolic syndrome in Korean elders. Methods: This study is based on the analysis of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) with 1,155 subjects (524 men, and 631 women) aged 60 or older, from 2008 to 2011. Sarcopenia was defined as an appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM), divided by weight (%) of <1 SD (standard deviation) below the sex-specific mean for young adults. Obesity was defined as a total body fat percent (men${\geq}$25%, women${\geq}$35%). Results: The prevalence of SO (sarcopenic obesity) was 13.3% among men and 22.5% among women. Both sexes showed a higher total body fat percent, and the SMI (skeletal muscle index) was the lowest in the SO group. Metabolic syndrome was highly prevalent in the SO group (52.5% men, 60.4% women). The SO group showed a higher risk for metabolic syndrome (odds ratio men 6.57 [95% CI 5.19~7.27], women 3.89 [95% CI 2.41~6.29]) than the obese group (men 3.14 [95% CI 1.76~4.14], women 2.54 [95% CI 1.38~4.65]). Conclusion: SO is a major risk factor for metabolic syndrome in Korean elders. Therefore, a nursing program should be given to the Korean elderly SO group to prevent metabolic syndrome.

  • This study utilized data to classify and characterize the body types of plus-size adult men aged in their 30s and 40s. Diversity is an important factor in the era of inclusive design, and discussion about size diversity to include the plus size should be accommodated. Data from 493 adult men classified as obese (with a World Health Organization criterion ≥25 BMI) were used for the analysis. The results of the study are as follows. Six independent factors were extracted using factor analysis for cluster analysis, which were then classified into five types. Type 1 (29.01%) was identified as body type I with the smallest degree of obesity. Type 2 (15.4%) was identified as body type Y with wide shoulders and a thin waist. Type 3 (14.2%) was the largest body volume (body type O), while the fourth (19.27%) identified as body type H has a large height and upper body. Lastly, type 5 (22.11%) has a long lower body and a slim abdomen, referred to as body type X. This study presents a basis for the development of various clothing sizes utilizing the body shape characteristics of plus-size men in their 30s and 40s. Follow-up research is needed to develop patterns for plus size men and to design various products.

  • Purpose: This study compared the differences in health and dietary characteristics between middle-aged men and women according to their health-related quality of life. Methods: This study used the data from the 2019 and 2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The participants were men (n = 1,571) and women (n = 2,179) aged 40-59. A health-related Quality of Life Instrument with eight items (HINT-8) was used to measure the health-related quality of life. The participants were divided into four groups based on their HINT-8 total scores (high, mid-high, mid-low, and low). The general and health characteristics, mental health, and dietary behaviors were compared according to the quality of life. Results: Men with a lower quality of life had lower incomes, were more likely to be single, smoked and drank more, and perceived themselves as slim or obese. Women with a lower quality of life had a higher proportion of older age, obesity, lower education and income, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. Both men and women with a lower quality of life had higher proportions of subjectively perceiving poor health, weight gain over the past year, and considering themselves as obese. Both men and women with a lower quality of life had lower consumption frequencies of vegetables/mushrooms/seaweed and fruits. Conclusion: Both men and women with lower health-related quality of life had lower incomes, higher rates of perceiving their health as poor, and consumed vegetables/ mushrooms/seaweed and fruits less frequently, but they showed different characteristics in other aspects. Therefore, policy development tailored to men and women is necessary.

  • This study presents an efficient clothes-sizing system for those experiencing obesity in old age with the aim of revitalizing the clothing industry for older obese people. The study targets 249 obese men aged 60 to 85 who satisfy a Rohrer index score of 1.6 or higher and a BMI (body mass index) of 25 or higher. Elderly obese males showed more obesity in the body based on the waist. In particular, those in their 60s were the most obese, and after reaching their 70s, characteristics of old age in which the stature was reduced and the limbs were tapered were shown. The clothes-sizing system was set to 5cm in stature, 5cm and 3cm in chest girth, 2cm in waist girth (omphalion), and 2cm in hip girth according to the KS standards. Through the two-way distribution of each section, the name of the section with a high distribution was given. Casual tops were selected from eight sizes, ranging from 155 to 170cm in stature and 95 to 105cm in chest girth. Suit top sizes were selected from eight sizes, ranging from 160 to 170cm in stature and 94 to 103cm in chest girth. Bottoms suggested 10 sizes distributed between 90 and 100cm in waist girth (omphalion) and 92 and 98cm in hip girth. According to the KS standards, the detailed size was divided into the basic part and the reference part.
