  • The aim of this study was to investigate the issue in obese children with a high probability of leading to precocious puberty for they have more advanced skeletal maturation compared to normal children in order to contribute to the health of obese children by identifying the relationship between physique and physical fitness according to their skeletal maturation. A total of 243 obese children between the ages of 10-13 were enrolled as subjects, and the skeletal maturation, which symbolize indicators of biological maturation, were evaluated by using the TW3 method after hand-wrist radiographs, thus classified the skeletal maturation level into retarded group(n=70), normal group(n=128), and advanced group(n=45). A stadiometer and InBody 270 (Biospace, Korea) were used to measure 3 components in physique. A total of 7 components in physical fitness, which included muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, power, cardiovascular endurance, balance, agility, were measured as well. Descriptive statistics and one-way variable analysis (ANOVA) were conducted for data processing using SPSS 25.0, and Duncan's multiple-range method was used for post hoc analysis; and it was considered significant at the level of P< .05. Analysis results of this study may be summarized as follow. First, height and weight in physique factors according to the skeletal maturation between the retarded, normal, and advanced groups in males and females were highly significant. Second, physical fitness comparison according to the skeletal maturation in males were statistically significant in muscular strength, power, and agility whereas muscular strength and balance were statistically significant in females.

  • The assessment of children's nutritional intakes is important because any nutritional inadequacies or toxicities may have adverse consequences. Studies on the nutritional intakes of Korean children are limited. The aims of this study were to determine anthropometric indices, estimate selectee nutrient intakes of young Korean children, and compare these intakes with current Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans. This study included 136 healthy children(65 boys, 71 girls), 2-6 y old, living in Kwangju, Korea. Weights and heights were measured. Three consecutive 24-h food recalls were obtained. According to International Obesity Taskforce BMI cutoffs, 8% were overweight and 2% were obese. The energy intakes of 40% were < Korean Estimated Energy Requirements, while all subjects consumed $\geq$ Korean Estimated Average Requirement(EAR) for protein. The majority of the children consumed > Korean EAR for iron, zinc, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, vitamin $B_6$, and niacin. Vitamin E intakes of 65% of the Korean children were < Korean Adequate Intake, and approximately half of the subjects had < Korean EAR for calcium and for folate. Many young children in Kwangju, Korea, likely have inadequate status of calcium, folate, and vitamin E.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of obesity and to examine the eating habits of elementary school students in Iksan dity. The study was carried out on 292 students(male: 151, female : 141)in May of 1997. The average height and weight of the subjects were 141 cm and 37kg in males and 142 cm and 36kg in females, which were similar to the average of Chonbuk. A Weight/Length Index(WLI), Broca Index, Rohrer Index(RI), Body Mass Index(BMI) and Waist Hip Ratio(WHR) were used as an obesity index to classify degree of obesity. WLI, Broca Index and RI were proper for judging child obesity and strict judgments were conducted in the order of RI, WLI and Brcoa Index. The subjects were classified as 30.8% underweight, 43.5% normal, 8.2% overweight and 17.5% obese by WLI and there were significant differences between height(p<0.05) and weight(p<0.01) according to obesity degree among the four groups. 50.3% of the boys and 55.3% of the girls are regularly, and the main reason they didn't ate regularly, and the maim reason they didn't eat breakfast(78.4%) was due to lack of time. The frequency of snacks were 1-2 times a week(40.4%), fruits(40.4%) from market and supermarket(68.2%). According to the survey 84.6%, 77.45, 78.1%, 69.9%, 59.9% and 86.6% of subjects didn't eat meat, fish, soysauce, instant food, sugar and seaweed respectively. Seaweed, meat, and soysauce showed low preferences. 69.5% and 74.75 of the subjects drink milk and ate kimchi respectively. By analyzing eating habits according to the degree of obesity, the rate of skipping breakfast(p<0.01), and eating meat or fish(p<0.05) were high in the overweight and obese groups of girls. In the boys case, the rate of not eating food in sugar(p<0.05) was high in the obese group. Obese children need to correct their eating habit. This reasserts the importance of nutrition education in children though teachers, parents, and dietitions. The findings of this study may be applied to nutrition education to ensure better physical fitness for children.

  • A Korean traditional herbal formular, Taeumbiman-tang(TBT), was based on Taeumjowi-tang, currently the most widely used herbal formula compound, and which is known to be safe and have a positive effect on adult obesity. TBT was given to obese children for thirty days, and was found to be clinically safe and effective. The subjects were children who had been admitted into the hospital to be treated for obesity, that had more than 20% relative body weight. Originally there were 19 subjects, but 5 dropped out of the experiment. There were 5 girls and 9 boys, whose average ages were $11.00\;{\pm}\;2.60$ years, average weight was $54.01\;{\pm}\;18.59\;kg$. As a pretest, all of the volunteers were examined for height, weight, blood pressure, pulse rate, EKG, and chest radiography. The subjects underwent interview, body measurement tests, blood tests, and safety tests under 8 hour fasting state. After 15 days of TBT intake, the safety tests and the interview were conducted. The interview, body measurement tests, blood tests, and safety tests were conducted again after the 30 day trial was completed. The short term effects of TBT on obese children is weight loss. It did not cause any significant changes in the subject's livers, hearts, and kidneys, and clinically dangerous side effects or withdrawal symptoms were not observed.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between obesity and dental caries in children and adolescents. This study was analyzed by searching the following words in Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.co.kr), Kiss (kiss.kstudy.com), KCI (www.kci.go.kr), and RISS (riss.kr): "pediatric," "juvenile," "obesity," and "dental caries." A total of 19 Korean and 10 foreign studies out of 107 studies were selected after excluding the studies based on the exclusion criteria. When evaluating the relationship between childhood and adolescent obesity and dental caries, 16 out of 29 articles (55.2%) indicated a significant relationship, and 2 (6.9%) indicated different results based on sex, while 13 articles (44.8%) showed no significant relationship between obesity and dental caries. Among the significant studies, a total of 10 (34.5%) showed that the number of dental caries increased according to an increase in obesity, i.e., from normal to overweight to obese. A total of 5 studies (17.2%) reported that the number of dental caries increased in underweight individuals compared to those of normal weight, or decreased according to an increase in obesity, while 1 study (3.4%) indicated that the number of dental caries increased in both the underweight and obese groups compared to the normal weight group. Therefore, studies on the relationship between dental caries and the degree of obesity in children and adolescents have not shown a certain trend.

  • This study was intended to provide basic data of nutrition education to a prevention of obesity and living patterns of elementary school students. Through the measurment of the actual obesity rate of children for students who were in the fifth and sixth grades of elementary school as well as their mothers, and by analyzing obesity-related factors. Children have started to have the characteristics obesity and obesity problems. 1. There were total 234 children including 133 boys (56.8%) and 101 girls (43.2%) for the study. There were 80 children in the fifth grade (34.2%) and 154 children in the sixth grade (65.8%). 2. Among the subjects 20.1% were obese. By gender, the obesity rate of boys (27.1%) was higher than that of girls (l0.9%)(p<0.01). By grade, children in the fifth grade (26.3%) had higher obesity rate than children in the sixth grade (l6.9%)(p<0.05). 3. In terms of the educational level of parents, the obesity rate of children of parents who received university and/or higher education was 27.5% (p<0.05). 44.1% of parents answered ‘I almost never give snack’s’(p<0.01). 4. There was 32.8% for an irregular quantity of meal. There was no obese child who under-ate (p<0.05). In terms of impulse eating, ‘I eat.’ and ‘I don't eat.’ were 24.4% and 25.9% respectively. The obesity rate of the case of ‘I eat only food I like.’ was 10.6% (p<0.05). In terms of the obesity rate based on the daily average meal frequency, there was the highest rate of 26.1% for I average meal frequency per day, 13.0% for 2 daily average meal frequency, and 7.4% for over 3 average meal frequency per day (p<0.05). For a degree of a physical activity, the group of active physical activity (p<0.05) and the group which liked the physical exercise showed a lower obesity rate (p<0.001). The obesity rate of children who had regular exercise was 11.8%. It was lower than the obesity rate (24.8%) of children who didn't exercise (p<0.01). The higher exercise frequency per week was, the lower the obesity rate was(p<0.01). In terms of the exercise time, there was 8.3% for over 60 minutes and 28.9% for less 15 minutes. The group which had the long exercise time showed a lower obesity rate(p<0.05). As the result, the education for obesity must enable students to recognize the warning signs for obesity and control their own weight with proper living patterns, by modifying behaviors considering the degree of obesity. Obesity must be controlled by the prevention and education connected with the family for all students as one of the school health programs. There must be also the development of a program through individual consultation considering the degree of obesity.

  • To evaluate the effect of obesity on serum leptin and insulin levels in 80 elementary school children (aged 10.8 yr, 47 boys, 33 girls), we collected the anthropometric data and measured serum leptin and insulin levels. Serum leptin level and insulin resistance are known as factors which are associated with obesity and obesity related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension. The results were as follows. The serum levels of insulin (p<0.001), leptin (p<0.001) and HOM $A_{IR}$ (p<0.001) in obese group were significantly higher than those of other groups. The obesity indices correlated significantly to serum levels of insulin and leptin, but not to fasting glucose level. These results suggested that circulating leptin and insulin concentrations may act as a humoral signal indicator to adiposity-associated metabolic disorder in elementary school children.
