Oats (Avena sativa L.) are well known for having high contents of bioactive compounds and health benefits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant compounds and antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts from milling fractions and whole grains of oat. The contents of total polyphenolics and flavonoids were analyzed by spectrophotometric methods. ABTS radical and DPPH radical scavenging activities and reducing power were used to compare relative antioxidant activities of milling fractions from oat. Total polyphenolics and flavonoids were much more abundant in oat bran extract than in extracts from whole grain and endosperm. In addition, high levels of ABTS radical (42.34 mg Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)/100 g sample) and DPPH radical (24.18 mg TEAC/100 g sample) scavenging activities and reducing power ($A_{700}=0.76$) were detected in oat bran. The results of this study indicate that oat bran has significantly higher antioxidant activities and appears to have significant health benefits.
Various light intensity and light quality were treated to oat seedlings to investigate the effect of light on the chlorophyll accumulation and the formation of chlorophyll-protein complexes. The Increase of total chlorophyll accumulation and Chl (chlorophyll) a/b ratio was promoted under H (high intensity) white light during oat chloroplast development when compared to 1 (low intensity) white light. Also H white light was more effective in the formation of chlorophyll-protein complexes associated with PSI CCI and CCII than L white light. The seedlings grown in various right quality caused little changes in total chiorophyl and ChI-a/b ratio when compared to those grown in L white light. The assembly of LHCII trimer was more affected by L white light treatment in the formation of-chlorophyll-protein complexes than red light treatment. The effect of blue light on the relative composition of chlorophyll-protein complexes was similar to that of L white light. Particualrly, blue light was more effective in the synthesis of LHCII monomer than the other light quality at the early stage of greening. When compared to red light, blue light was more effective the increase of chlorophyll accumulation and Chl a/b ratio than 1ight Quality, and light Quality may be in important factor for the regulation of the organization in the chlorophyll-protein complexes curing greening.

An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of seeding rates and nitrogen fertilization levels on the agronomic characteristics, nutritive value and forage yield of spring oat(Avena sativa L.). This experiment was undertaken over a period of 2 months from September to November, 1987. The results obtained are summarized as follows : Increased seeding rates of 120, 160 and 200kg/ha decreased emergence rates by 93.4, 71.4 and 70.6 %, respectively(P<0.05). Tillering was decreased by higher seeding rates(P<0.05) and that of 120kg/ha of seeding rate with 200kg/ha of nitrogen fertilization level was highest by 3.3. Among three seeding rates, tillering of 200 kg/ha of nitrogen fertilization level was lowest by 2.1. Leaf width was influenced by seeding rates. When seeding rate was increased, narrow leaf width (P
Evaluation works of oat in mixture with rye on forage yield have not been reported. The objective of this study was to determine yield and quality of forage mixture as affected by maturity of rye cultivar and oat-rye seeding rate at Suweon from 1999 to 2000. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. Main plots consisted of maturity of rye. such as early(cv. Koolgrazer) and late(cv. Kodiak)maturing cultivars. Sub-plots consisted of seeding rate (T1: Oat 2000 and rye 0kg/ha, Ts: Oat 150 and rye 40kg/ha, T3: Oat100 and rye 80kg/ha, T4: Oat50 and rye 120kg/ha. and T5: Oat0 and rye 160kg/ha). Crude protein(CP) content of oat-rye mixture harvested in the fall was not influenced by maturity of rye cultivar, but that of oat-rye mixture was increased from 13.6 to 19.3% as the seeding rate of rye increased(P<0.05), however, maturity of rye cultivar significantly affected CP content of oat-rye mixture in the spring(P<0.01). Acid detergent fiber(ADF) content of oat-rye mixture harvested in the spring was not significantly affected by rye cultivar, but the ADF was decreased from 27.8 to 20.7% as the seeding rate of rye increased(P$<$0.01). When rye was harveste in the spring, ADF content of late maturing cultivar 'Kodiak' was shown as 28.0%. This was lower than that of early maturing cultivar 'Koolgrazer' which was shown as 35.8%(P$<$0.01). Among treatments, neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and in vitro dry matter digestibility(IVDMD) of oat-rye mixture showed a similar trend made on ADF. In this experiment, the highest forage yield (12.356kg/ha) was obtained from early maturing rye cultivar and seeding rates of 100kg/ha of oat and 80kg/ha of rye mixture. A significant interaction between maturity of rye cultivar and seeding rate was found(P$<$0.01). The above results indicate that an early maturing rye cultivar at the seeding rate of 100kd/ha in mixtures with 80kg/ha of oat could be recommended as a succeeding cropping system after corn for silage.

Due to increased consumption and demand for oat-related foods and processed food, this study examined physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, and ${\beta}-glucan$ contents of 5 Korean naked oat cultivars. Oat seeds had long-grain appearance in all cultivars except for Seonyang. The contents of main components such as protein, starch, and crude fat were significantly different among cultivars. The total ${\beta}-glucan$ content was 3.78-4.60% and the soluble ${\beta}-glucan$ ratio was 71-83%. Fatty acid composition was C18:1, C18:2, C16:0, C18:0, and C18:3. Unsaturated fatty acid (USFA) content was 75.4-81.2%. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethyl-benzo-thiaxoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity were significantly different for each cultivar. Daeyang had the highest ${\beta}-glucan$, USFA content, and antioxidant activity. Protein content showed a negative correlation with starch content (r = -0.775). Antioxidant activity was positively correlated with total phenol content (r =0.760). Ash content and flour whiteness showed a positive correlation (r =0.732).

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of the various stage of growth on dry matter yield and chmical composition of forage oat(Avena sativa. L.). Seeds were planted on March 13 1993 on the Livestock Experimental Farm Keiymung junior college at keongsan Keongsangbukdo. Oat plant were harvested at various stages of maturity while the oat was in the premature stages. 1. Whole plant dry matter increased with advancing maturity. It was 11.8, 12.3, 14.9, 25.6 and 28.8% at before flag leaf emerged, flag leaf emerged, heads emerged, milk and dough stage., respectively. Dry matter increased very little during from before flag leaf emerged to heads emerged, after which it increased rapidly until the plant was dough stage. 2. Leaf weight ratio decreased with advancing maturity from before flag leaf emerged to dough, varied fmm 58 to 1 1%. Grain(with lemma, palea) increased with advancing maturity from heads emerged to dough, varied from 7 to 43%. 3. The content of cmde protein decreased during the stages of growth until milk(P<.OS), and then changed very little with advancing maturity. 4. The content of NDF and ADF increased rapidly during the early growth period until heading(P<.05) and then decreased due to the increase in carbohydrate storage in the grain. 5. The dry matter yields per ha increased with advancing maturity, it was 2,420, 4,380, 7,190, 13,130 and 14,530kg at before flag leaf emerged, flag leaf emerged, heads emerged, milk and early dough, respectively. Significant difference has been obtained among stages of growth(P< .05). 6. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested that milk stage of maturity is higher in dry matter yields would be recomendable for spring oat for silage.
'Jungmo2501' (Avena sativa L.), a winter oat for forage use, was developed by the breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2010. The following is the characteristics of 'Jungmo2501' that is characterized as light green leaf, yellow brown culm and whitish yellow grain. The heading date of 'Jungmo2501' was about 3 days earlier than that of check cultivar 'Samhan'(May 7 and May 10, respectively). Its plant height was 11 cm longer than 103 cm of the check, and the leaf blade ratio of aerial parts was 26 % higher than the check (11.8% and 9.4%, respectively). The cold tolerance, resistance to lodging and wet injury of 'Jungmo2501' were similar to those of the check. The average forage dry matter yield of 'Jungmo2501' harvested at milk-ripe stage was 5% higher than the check ($15.5ton\;ha^{-1}$ and $14.7ton\;ha^{-1}$, respectively). 'Jungmo2501' was higher than the check in terms of protein content (6.6% and 5.9%, respectively), neutral detergent fiber (58.5% and 57.6%, respectively), and acid detergent fiber (34.5% and 32.1%, respectively), while total digestible nutrients was lower than the check (61.6% and 63.6%, respectively), and TDN yield was $0.37ton\;ha^{-1}$ more than that of the check ($9.71ton\;ha^{-1}$ and $9.34ton\;ha^{-1}$, respectively). The silage grade of 'Jungmo2501' estimated by Flig score showed level II, meaning good quality. Fall sowing cropping of 'Jungmo2501' is recommended only for areas where average daily minimum mean temperatures in January are higher than $-6^{\circ}C$.
The objective of this research was to study the production and quality of forage at three different times of the year (April, June and July) of six winter cereals in the southern plateau of the Iberian Peninsula. The cereals studied were Triticale (xTriticosecale wittm) cv. "Tritano", Oat (Avena sativa L.) cv. "Prevision" and cv. "Saia; Rye (Secale cereale L.) cv. "Giganton", Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cv. "Cameo" and cv. "Albacete". The study was carried out in three different locations and over three successive years of harvesting. The three variables considered were location, year and cereal. The % dry matter (DM), % crude protein (CP), % acid detergent fiber (ADF), % neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and % ash content were determined for the three sampling periods and the quality was calculated in milk forage units (MFU/kg DM), the production in kg DM/ha, MFU/ha and kg CP/ha. In all three sampling periods the quality of the cereals was significantly influenced only by the year and by species. However, for production of dry matter (kg DM/ha), milk forage units (MFU/ha) and gross protein (kg CP/ha) all three variables were of significant influence as were their interactions. In the April sampling, the species which showed a significantly higher production ($p{\leq}0.05$) was rye (1,693 kg DM/ha), which, along with its forage quality (16.56% CP, 0.886 MFU/kg DM) meant that the same occurred in MFU/ha and kg CP/ha. Significant differences between species were also found for the June sampling. The most productive cereal was again rye with 2,656 kg DM/ha, although its sharp fall in forage quality meant that barley cv Albacete (2,513 kg DM/ha) returned the highest production in forage units (1,934 vs. 1,951 MFU/ha) and barley cv. Cameo (2,413 kg DM/ha) in gross protein production (242 vs. 264 kg CP/ha). The significantly highest cereal production for July was barley cv. Albacete (4,923 kg DM/ha, 9.11% CP 0.722 MFU/kg DM). As a consequence of the results, we conclude that from the viewpoint of nutritional quality and production, rye is the most suitable for use in early spring in whatever year and location. However, barley cv. "Albacete" is the most appropriate for utilisation in later spring or early summer.

'Okhan' (Avena sativa L.), an oat cultivar for winter use, was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2011. It was derived from an original cross between 'Early80', exhibiting early heading, and 'Maine PI-590' (CI 7518), exhibiting large-size grain, in 1995. Subsequent generations as well as cross-bred cultivars were handled in bulk, and pedigree selection programs took place at Suwon and Yeoncheon, respectively. A promising line, 'SO95027-B-45-16-10-6-2-Y7-10', was selected in 2004, and was designated 'Gwiri74' after being selected from a yield trial for three years from 2005 to 2008. The breeding line 'Gwiri74' was subsequently evaluated for earliness of heading and forage yield in four different locations, Yesan, Iksan, Kimjae, and Jeju, from 2009 to 2011, and was finally named as 'Okhan'. Over 3 years, the heading date of 'Okhan' was about 6 days earlier than that of the check cultivar 'Samhan', and their average forage dry matter yield harvested at the milk-ripe stage was 15.0 ton $ha^{-1}$, compared with 14.1 ton $ha^{-1}$ of check cultivar. Cultivar 'Okhan' was lower than the check cultivar 'Samhan' in terms of the protein content (9.2% and 9.9%, respectively) and total digestible nutrients (58.5%, and 59.3%, respectively), while the TDN yield per ha was more than the check (8.70 and 8.36 kg, respectively). Fall sowing cropping of 'Okhan' is recommended only in areas where average daily minimum mean temperatures in January are higher than $-7^{\circ}C$, and it should not be cultivated in mountain areas, where frost damage is likely to occur.

This expeiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of the different planting and harvest date on dry matter yield and feed value of forage oat (Avena sativa L.). Seeds were planted on September 1 (first), September 11 (second) and September 21 (third planting date) by hand between rows 30cm and harvest were achieved on November 7 (first) and November 19 (second harvest date) 1992. 1. The plant height was influenced by planting and harvest date. the first planting date showed the tallest plant height. 2. Dry matter (DM) content decreased with delaying planting date from first to third planting date, DM varied from 15.1 to 13.5% and increased with delaying harvest date from first to second harvest date at the same planting date. 3. Leaf weight ratio increased delaying planting date from first to third planting date, varied from 52 to 77%. 4. The content of crude protein increased with delaying planting date from first to third planting date, varied from 14.3 to 25.4% NDF and ADF contents were influenced by planting date and harvest date, it was decreased with delaying planting date. 5. The dry matter yields per ha decreased with delaying planting date: it was 6, 705, 5, 520, and 2, 315 kg at first, second and third planting date, respectively. Significant difference has been obtained among planting date(P<.01). The dry matter yields increased with delaying harvest: it was 4, 027 kg at first and 5, 667 kg at second harvest(P<.01). 6. According to the results obtained from this study. it is suggested that planting date on September 1 and harvest date on November 19 would be recomendable for fall oat forage production.
