Thermodynamic performance of a simple Rankine cycle, regenerative Rankine cycle, and Kalina cycle for Ocean thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) is evaluated under the same condition with various working fluids. The evaporator and condenser are modeled by a UA and LMTD method while the turbine and pump are modeled by considering isentropic efficiencies. As for the working fluids, R22, R134a, R32, propylene, ammonia are used for the Rankine cycles while ammonia/water and R32/R134a mixtures are used for Kalina cycle. Calculated results show that newly developed fluids such non-ozone depleting refrigerants as R134a and R32 perform as well as R22 and ammonia. The regenerative Rankine cycle showed a 1.2 to 2.8% increase in energy efficiency as compared to the simple Rankine cycle while the Kalina cycle with ammonia/water mixture showed a 1.8% increase in energy efficiency. The efficiency of the Kalina cycle with R32/R134a mixtures is the same as that of a simple Rankine cycle using R22. Therefore, the regenerative Rankine cycle turns out to be best choice for OTEC applications.

The preliminary design of a radial inflow turbine using R134a as the working fluid at 5 kW of power for application to ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is performed to obtain the trends for the efficiency and geometrical dimensions of the turbine. Using input conditions that included a turbine inlet temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, an outlet static pressure of 4.9 bar, and a mass flow rate of 1.16 kg/s, the results of a mean flow analysis show the major dimensions of the turbine, along with an angular velocity of 12,820 rpm. Based on these results, a three-dimensional turbine model is constructed for a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The flow characteristics inside the turbine, including the volute and nozzle, are investigated using the CFD software ANSYS CFX. For a pertinent number of nozzle guide vanes, ranging from 10 to 15, the turbine efficiency was higher than 80%, with the highest efficiency shown by a nozzle with 15 guide vanes.
In this paper, EP-Kalina cycle applying liquid-vapor ejector and motive pump is newly proposed. In this EP-Kalina cycle, the liquid-vapor ejector is used to increase pressure difference between inlet and outlet of the turbine. Also the motive pump enhances the performance of liquid-vapor ejector, resulting in increase of system efficiency of OTEC cycles. The comparison cycles in this study are basic, Kalina, EKalina and EP-Kalina ones. The pump work, net power, APRe, APRc, TPP and system efficiency of each cycle are compared. In case of net power, EP-Kalina cycle is lowest among the cycles due to the application of the motive pump. But, the net power difference of cycles seems to be minor since the pump work of cycles is merely about 1kW, compared to turbine gross power of 20kW. The system efficiency of EP-Kalina cycle shows 3.22%, relatively 44% higher than that of basic OTEC cycle. Therefore, the system efficiency is increased by applying the liquid-vapor ejector and the motive pump. Additional performance analysis is necessary to optimize the proposed EP-Kalina cycle.
In this paper, Performance of 1MW OTEC system using R32 with varying seawater temperature range is studied. Steady state cycle is designed and its output and generation efficiency were 1,014kW and 2.72%, respectively. Compared to dynamic cycle, system performance and change during long term operation is studied. The simulation is performed by decreasing surface seawater temperature from $29^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ with 20 minute of reaction time. Dynamic cycle with same condition applied to steady state cycle and it showed output and efficiency of 1,020kW and 2.75% respectively. Seawater temperature decreased from $29^{\circ}C$ and the vapor fraction of refrigerant decreased below 1 at $28^{\circ}C$. While the vapor fraction was above 1, the turbine output decreased by 0.017kW per second. After the seawater temperature reached $26.2^{\circ}C$, the turbine output decreased by 1.03kW per second. However, Driving the turbine below the saturation temperature caused the occurrence of surging and the influx of liquid refrigerant. When the liquid separator having a capacity of 1.0 m3 was used, the flow into the turbine was confirmed after 5 minutes from the first liquid refrigerant coming into the separator.

Heat pump systems based on ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems use the temperature difference between deep ocean water and surface ocean water to operate. However, they may have heat transfer degradation due to corrosion on the heat exchanger surface due to the salinity of sea water. This study presents experimental results for the heat transfer decrease of corroded metal tubes with respect to corrosion time. In order to replace high-priced titanium, electro-deposition (ED) coating was performed on aluminum tubes. Aluminum tubes with ED coating thicknesses of 10, 15, and $20{\mu}m$ were tested for double-tube heat exchangers after performing accelerated corrosion for 6, 12, and 18 weeks. The effects of the coating thickness and the corrosion time on the heat transfer degradation were investigated. From the results, the aluminum tube with an ED coating of $20{\mu}m$ thickness can be suggested as a candidate for replacing titanium tubes.

The concept design of a riser for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion in 10 MW is proposed and its dynamic behaviour characteristics is analyzed with numerical method. A riser pipe with a hollow along its thickness in the cross-section to increase the effective modulus of its cross-section is designed considering the manufacture. The riser pipe without hollows along its thickness needs a lumped weight at the bottom end of a riser in order to keep its vertical hanging configuration from large buoyancy and the strong current. The riser is designed to control its density by inserting materials in high or low density into a hollow. The dynamic behaviour characteristics of the two designed risers is evaluated with the developed numerical analysis tool. The combined stress of the riser with a lumped weight is showed to be dominated by weight of a lumped mass. The riser with no hollow shows large combined stress near sea surface by strong current. Local structural analysis for the cross-section of a hollow riser is needed in detail.
This study discusses the interacting with deep water waves approaching from deep water based on the linear wave theory and steep sloping sea bottom floor by the numerical procedure. The results of particular interest are particle velocity and acceleration in x, y, z direction wave height amplification factor reflection coefficient and dimensionless pressure distribution on the steep sloping bottom with respect to the various incident wave angle. The wave loads relative to various bottom slopes, incident wave angles and wave periods on submerged breakwater and pipe are represented in comparison with mild sloping bottom the wave load parameters on the steep sloping bottom seemed to be influenced by variation of incident wave angle. In general the particle velocities and accelerations in x, y, z directions on the steep sloping bottom represented larger value or about two than those on the mild sloping bottom according to incident wave angle. However, the wave height amplification factors did not show distinct difference, but the slight variation with respect to the various incident angle showed on mild sloping bottom. The reflection coefficient increased with respect to increase of the incident angle on the steep sloping bottom the results also indicate that the very steep sloping beach produces a rather substantial amount of reflection as we expected. No significant variation of wave pressure was shown on the steep sloping bottom but it represented a certain amount of variation on the mild sloping bottom according to the various incident wave angle. The analysis at the OTEC site also showed similar results.

The global demand for oil and natural gas has increased, and resource development is moving to the deep sea. Floating and flexible offshore structures such as semi-submersible, spar, and FPSO structures have been widely used. The major equipment of floating structures is always exposed to waves, currents, and other marine environmental factors, which cause structural damage. Moreover, flexible risers are susceptible to an exciting force due to the motion of the floating body. The inline and transverse responses from the three-dimensional behavior of a floating structure occur because of various forces. Typical risers are made of steel pipe and applied in the oil and gas development field, but flexible materials such as polyethylene are suitable for OTEC risers. Consequently, the optimal design of a flexible offshore plant requires a dynamic behavior analysis of slender bodies made of the different materials commonly used for offshore flexible risers. In this study, a three-dimensional motion measurement device was used to analyze the displacements of riser models induced by external force factors, and forced oscillation of a riser was linked to forced oscillation under a steady flow and regular wave condition.
