The probes of fiber optic OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor was developed to measure displacements of social infrastructures. This probe was simply constructed with two conventional optical fiber connectors, and a fiber bending part, which transforms displacement to optical loss. When the displacement was affected on the bending loss part, the reflected light intensity of one optical connector was changed. The displacement was determined from this reflected light intensity change of the connector. fiber optic OTDR displacement sensor was developed as the multiplexed type of one fiber line with 5 sensor probes. Multiplexing operation was tested by these 5 sensor probes.

The perimeter defense system was created and its characteristics were evaluated. It was designed to utilize the fiber sensing device, namely OTDR(Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) which has been used for the maintenance of the optical communication network. An OTDR was constituted by a pulse laser with the nature of 1310nm, +15dBm for the observation of 400 meter optical fence. The high-speed 32-bit processor(S3C2440) has applied to MPU(Main Processor Unit) which helps to improve the performance of OTDR algorithms. Consequently, the maximum error was 0.84 meter on the performance test of the 10km monitoring and the pass criteria of ${\pm}1m$ satisfied in all the sections. The alarm delay time was under 3 sec after detecting the disorder. For the case of secondary trespassing after primary trespassing, the optical switch was installed in OTDR to monitor the secondary trespassing and to measure the multi-point detection. Therefore, this paper shows that the detections of secondary trespassing and multi-point is possible by means of optical switch.

An experimental study is presented of the application of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation method based on optical time-domain reflectometery (OTDR) to monitoring strain in bent reinforced concrete beams. The results obtained with the OTDR-based method are shown to agree well with the direct spectral measurements. Strain sensitivity, resolution and measurement range amounted to $0.0028dB/{\mu}strain$; $30{\mu}strain$; $4000{\mu}strain$, correspondingly. Significant differences are observed in surface and inner deformations of the test beams which can be attributed to different mechanical properties of concrete and steel reinforcement. The prospects of using OTDR-based FBG interrogation technique in real-life applications are discussed.
Railway obstacle detecion system has been introduced with high-speed railway in 2004 to prevent accidents by obstacles such as landslide, rockfall and things fallen from the gauntry over the railway. But existing system has some limitation for landslide or fallen obstacle over railway. Therefore, In this study, we suggest new advanced obstacle detection system introducing the OTDR, optical fiber fences and detection cameras. This system can detect depression degree by the force to the fences and video for the specific region as well as detection wire Off condition. We produce and functional tests for fiber fence and OTDR, which are the core parts of the development system, and results were obtained to demonstrate improved detection capabilities. Several functions also been tested to verify the advanced detection performance and got some satisfactory results. Further we will conduct environment tests and field test.

This paper, proposes a new analysis method for the event detection of an OTDR signal. An OTDR signal was passed through the Hamming filter to remove the high frequency noise included in the signal. The signal was then passed consecutively through a differential filter to detect the events of interest. The terminal position was determined using the fact that there is a large gap between the signal and the trailing noise power beyond the terminal. This study examined the local maxima of the signal up to the terminal position and determined the peak regions. The real events were determined from the peak regions using noise information and peak threshold. Finally, the user events were found by inspecting the user peaks beyond the terminal position. The events of the OTDR signal without users are located at less than 17m compared to the optical fiber link setup. The events of the JDSU device are located less than 25m and their users are less than 5m. For the RadianTech device, the events are detected at less than 19m and the users are found in 5m. The results suggest that the proposed method is sufficiently applicable to an optical fiber link monitoring system.

Detection of cracks in concrete beams using optical fiber sensors is useful for monitoring of concrete structures. In this study, optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) is used to detect cracks. Resolution of OTDR is the main contributor to detect cracks in concrete structures. The OTDR used in this study can detect cracks with high precision of 0.5 m. Two mortar beams, reinforced with a 19 mm diameter steel bar, are made with the dimensions of 140 mm (width) ${\times}$ 200 mm (depth) ${\times}$ 2.000 mm (length). Two fibers are embedded inside each beam and two fibers are attached under the beams. The application of measurement system which consists of fiber and FC/PC connecter is studied. For this, theory of optics, resolution, crack moment, and size of specimens are investigated. From the measured data, it is verified that fibers which are attached under the beam can detect the crack in beams effectively. However, fibers embedded inside the beam are unable to detect cracks in beams using the OTDR in this study.
