Exercise is an important strategy for health promotion in patients having osteoarthritis. But, lots of patients with osteoarthritis were underexercised. Exercise pattern and influencing factors of exercise barrier are not well-known. To address this issue, we studied the exercise pattern and influencing factors of exercise barrier in patients with osteoarthritis. The subjects of the study were 463 adult osteoarthritis (Mean age = 61.63 years) who had diagnosed osteoarthritis by rheumatologist. Data were gathered from May 1999 to February 2000 using a questionnaire and exercise barrier(Sallis et al, 1989), exercise pattern(Lee et al., 2000), physical status by WOMAC(Bellamy, 1989), socail support(Sallis et al., 1989), fatigue and pain using graphic rating scale, depression by CES-D(Radloff,1977). Data were analyzed with the SPSS win 6.0 using frequency, ANOVA, Stepwise multiple regression. The results of this study were as follows; 1) 56.4% of sample was 'do not exercise at all', 'longer rest than exercise', was 15.9%, 'longer exercise than rest' was 7.2%, 'exercise regularly' was 20.5%. 2) Social support (F=10.349, p=0.000) and exercise barrier(F=4.455, p=0.004) were showed significantly difference by exercise pattern. 3) Influencing factors of exercise barrier were depression and social support. Thoses explained 13.3% of exercise barrier. In conclusion, half of osteoarthritis patient did not do exercise and it was shown that depression and social support were major influencing factors to exercise barrier. The results of this study can be applied to develop the health promoting educational program for patients with osteoarthritis.
Many number of elderly people suffer from osteoarthritis, a degenerative arthritis. Korea is entering an aged society with a rapid increase in the elderly population. This increase in the elderly population has led to an increase in elderly osteoarthritis patients. Therefore, many elderly people are greatly hampered by the quality of life due to osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study is to clarify the risk factors of osteoarthritis and to investigate the relationship between negative emotional states and osteoarthritis. The results proved that demographic risk factors, anthropometric and biochemical factors, and health behaviors influence osteoarthritis. In addition, it was confirmed that negative emotions perceived by the elderly, such as depression and stress, should be regarded as main factors of osteoarthritis.
This study was performed to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of osteoarthritis in the elderly using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013~2014 KNHANES VI). A total of 2,148 (936 males, 1212 females) elderly participants aged 65 years or older were selected. Prevalence of osteoarthritis was higher in 460 female (80.7%) and 167 rural (29.1%) groups, than in 110 male (19.3%) and 404 urban (70.9%) groups. While the mean values of LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride level, and waist circumference were significantly higher in the osteoarthritis group than the normal group, other parameters including height, HDL-cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin and hematocrit values were not. Quality of life (EQ-5D) was also significantly lower in the osteoarthritis group. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that smoking, alcohol intake, obesity, hypercholesterolemia and energy intakes were significantly different in regards to the prevalence of osteoarthritis. This study suggests that obesity and energy intakes were associated with osteoarthritis, whereas risk factors of chronic disease, such as hypertension, Hypo-high density lipoprotein, hypertrigly-ceridemia, anemia, diabetes, vigorous physical activity, moderate physical activity and walking were not. Long-term prospective study is necessary to investigate the effects of these factors on osteoarthritis.
Background: Osteoarthritis is a common condition with an increasing prevalence and is a common cause of disability. Osteoarthritic pain decreases the quality of life, and simple gait training is used to alleviate it. Knee osteoarthritis limits joint motion in the sagittal and lateral directions. Although many recent studies have activated orthotic research to increase knee joint stabilization, no study has used patellar tendon straps to treat knee osteoarthritis. Objects: This study aimed to determine the effects of patellar tendon straps on kinematic, mechanical, and electromyographic activation in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Patients with knee osteoarthritis were selected. After creating the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), leg length difference, Q-angle, and thumb side flexion angle of the foot were measured. Kinematic, kinetic, and muscle activation data during walking before and after wearing the orthosis were viewed. Results: After wearing the patellar tendon straps, hip adduction from the terminal stance phase, knee flexion from the terminal swing phase, and ankle plantar flexion angle increased during the pre-swing and initial swing phases. The cadence of spatiotemporal parameters and velocity increased, and step time, stride time, and foot force duration decreased. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the increase in plantar flexion after strap wearing is inferred by an increase due to neurological mechanisms, and adduction at the hip joint is inferred by an increase in adduction due to increased velocity. The increase in cadence and velocity and the decrease in gait speed and foot pressure duration may be due to joint stabilization. It can be inferred that joint stabilization is increased by wearing knee straps. Thus, wearing a patellar tendon strap during gait in patients with knee osteoarthritis influences kinematic changes in the sagittal plane of the joint.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and grip strength of people with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Methods: This was a retrospective study that analyzed raw data from the first year of the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019). The study population was 780 people in total, ranging in age from their teens to their 80s. These were people who had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and the presence of arthritis in and grip strength of these subjects were determined using the average value of three measurements. Results: According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the prevalence of arthritis in Korea was 2.5% in men, 10.7% in women, and 13.1% overall. More women than men had osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and the number of people with osteoarthritis increased with age. In this study, of those with osteoarthritis, 13.5% were men and 88% were women; of those with rheumatoid arthritis, 19.3% were men and 56.3% were women. The number of patients with osteoarthritis increased with age, and rheumatoid arthritis was more common in older people. Subjects with osteoarthritis had lower grip strength than those without the disease, and the older the age at which rheumatoid arthritis was first diagnosed, the lower the grip strength. Conclusion: Grip strength is lower in patients with osteoarthritis than in those without osteoarthritis, and it is possible to estimate the degree to which muscle strength decreases.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a very common musculoskeletal disorder worldwide. The assessment of knee osteoarthritis, which requires a rapid and accurate initial diagnosis, is determined to be different depending on the currently dispersed classification system, and each classification system has different criteria. Also, because the medical staff directly sees and reads the X-ray pictures, it depends on the subjective opinion of the medical staff, and it takes time to establish an accurate diagnosis and a clear treatment plan. Therefore, in this study, we designed the stenosis length measurement algorithm and Osteophyte detection and length measurement algorithm, which are the criteria for determining the knee osteoarthritis grade, separately using CNN, which is a deep learning technique. In addition, we would like to create a grading system that integrates and complements the existing classification system and show results that match the judgments of actual medical staff. Based on publicly available OAI (Osteoarthritis Initiative) data, a total of 9,786 knee osteoarthritis data were used in this study, eventually achieving an Accuracy of 69.8% and an F1 score of 76.65%.

Osteoarthritis(OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by fibrillation and erosion in cartilage tissue, chondrocyte proliferation and osteophyte formation at the joint margins, and sclerotis of subchondral bone. We investigated the effects of Acyranthes Radix administration and Cervi Cornu Parvum aqua-acupuncture in monosodium iodoacetate(MIA) induced experimental osteoarthritis model. Sprague-Dawley 60 rats of 7-8 weeks, weight $240{\pm}10\;g$ were divided into two groups including the sham operation group(15 rats) and ostoarthritis group(45 rats). Histopathological examination, Mankin's score, and the measurement of inflammation factor were performed. Histological findings that are similar to those observed in human osteoarthritis, such as disorganization of chondrocytes, erosion and fibrillation of cartilage surface, and subchondral bone exposure were observed in a MIA-induced osteoarthritis model. Saflanin-O fast green staining revealed that marked diffuse reduction of proteoglycans treated with MIA. The Mankin's score were closely correlated to the grade of histological findings. The level of prostaglandin E2 and C-reactive protein were decreased experimental groups. We conclude that Acyranthes Radix administration and Cervi Cornu Parvum aqua-acupuncture, and combination treatment exerts a beneficial influence on the cartilage lesion in osteoarthritis rat.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the BeHaS exercise program on balance and walking ability in middle-aged women with knee osteoarthritis. Method: Participants were 36 patients (experimental group: 18, control group: 18) with knee osteoarthritis. Women with knee osteoarthritis in the experimental group participated in the BeHaS exercise program for 65 to 90 minutes per session twice a week for 12 weeks. Data were collected by a structured interview and measurement tool from September 1, 2005 to March 30, 2006. Descriptive statistics, such as frequency, percentages, means, SD and t-test, Chi square test were used with the SPSS Win 12.0 to analyze the data. Results: There was a significant difference between the two groups for dynamic balance, but differences in balance and walking ability were only partially supported. Conclusion: These findings indicate that the BeHaS exercise program could be a good nursing intervention for health maintenance and promotion of patients with knee osteoarthritis. Further research is needed in order to confirm these findings in elderly people with osteoarthritis.

Purpose : This study investigated the effects of osteoarthritis therapy using images and histological diagnosis after microcurrents were applied to osteoarthritic rats. Methods : Osteoarthritis was induced with a mixture of 2% carrageenan and 2% kaolin. The mixture (0.1 $m{\ell}$) was injected into the knee joints of rats. Osteoarthritis with articulation received microcurrent stimulation for four weeks (15 min/day, 5 days/week): treated with pulsation frequency of 5 pps and a stimulation intensity of 25 ${\mu}A$. Results : Osteoarthritis of the control group constantly changed. The group with a stimulation intensity of 25 ${\mu}A$ applied to the surface of the articular cartilage experienced near normal recovery according to image diagnosis. The result of histological and immunohistochemistry inspection confirms that microcurrent stimulation had a positive effect on the treatment of osteoarthritis. Conclusion : The differences among images and histological diagnoses show that steoarthritis will experience constant progression from stimulation.
