  • The EMG amplitude estimator, which has been investigated as an indicator of muscle force, is utilized as the control input to artificial prosthetic limbs. This paper describes an application of the optimal EMG amplitude estimator to the surface EMG signals recorded during constant isometric %MVC (maximum voluntary contraction) for 30 seconds and reports on assessing performance of the amplitude estimator from the application. Surface EMG signals, a total of 198 signals, were recorded from biceps brachii muscle over the range of 20-80%MVC isometric contraction. To examine the estimator performance, a SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) was computed from each amplitude estimate. The results of the study indicate that ARV(average rectified value) and RMS(root mean square) amplitude estimation with forth order whitening filter and 250[ms] moving average window length are optimal and showed the mean SNR improvement of about 50%, 40% and 20% for each 20%MVC, 50%MVC and 80%MVC surface EMG signals, respectively.

  • In korean peninsular, aircraft defense with SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) is very important because of short range of combat space in depth. Effective and successful defense operation largely depends on two factors, SAM's location and the number of SAM for each target based on missile's availability in each SAM's location. However, most previous papers have handled only the former. In this paper, we developed Set covering model which can handle both factors simultaneously and Multi-heuristic algorithm for solving allocation problem of the batteries and missile assignment problem in each battery. Genetic algorithm is used to decide optimal location of the batteries. To determine the number of SAM, a heuristic algorithm is applied for solving missile assignment problem. If the proposed model is applied to allocation of SAM, it will improve the effectiveness of air defense operations.

  • Response characteristics of the CVT system for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) are investigated. From the experiment, CVT ratio control algorithm for the optimal engine operation is obtained. To investigate the effect of the CVT system dynamic characteristics on the HEV performance, a hardware in the loop simulation (HILS) is performed. In the HILS, hardwares of the CVT belt-pulley and hydraulic control valves are used. It is found that the engine performance by the open loop CVT ratio control shows some deviation from the OOL in spite of the RCVs open loop control ability. To improve the engine performance, a closed loop control of the CVT ratio is proposed with variable control gains depending on the shift direction and the CVT speed ratio range by considering the nonlinear characteristics of the RCV and CVT belt-pulley dynamics. The HILS results show that the engine performance is improved by the closed loop control showing the operation trajectory close to the OOL.

  • In this study, purification of cold-adapted protease from Janthinobacterium sp. was investigated. First, using gradient precipitation, protease was confirmed to be deposited in the 30-80% range of ammonium sulfate. Next, DEAE-Sepharose column was used for the binding of the protease under various conditions. The optimal binding condition was found to be pH 8.5 and flow rate of 30 ml/h. Under the optimal condition, the protease was purified with 29% recovery yield. This result can be useful for the purification of other cold-adapted protein.

  • In this paper, we address the problem of bandwidth sharing among multiple primary users and multiple secondary users in a cognitive radio network. In cognitive radio networks, effective spectrum assignment for primary and secondary users is a challenge due to the available broad range of radio frequency spectrum as well as the requisition of harmonious coexistence of both users. To handle this problem, firstly, Bertrand game model is used to analyze a spectrum pricing in which multiple primary users emulate with each other to acquire maximal profit. After that, we employ Cournot game to model the spectrum sharing of secondary users to obtain optimal profit for each user also. Simulation results show that our scheme obtains optimal solution at Nash equilibrium.

  • In this paper, we consider feedback-linearizing control of VR (Variable Reluctance) motors which have been increasingly used in high performance direct-drive applications. We characterize all torque controllers that can make the generated torque of a VR motor linear to torque command but without torque ripple. The torque controlles maximize the range of torque commands which are admissible under the physical limitation in stator currents. The whole class of all such torque controllers is parameterized in the explicit form which contains a function to be chosen freely. This free function can be used to achieve other control objectives as well as linear dynamic characteristics. As the examples for optimal choices of the free function, we actually determine two optimal free functions, one for minimal rate of change in current commands and the other for minimal power loss due to stator resistance. To illuminate further the practical use of torque controllers proposed in this paper, we present some experimental results for the case of a commercially available VR motor.

  • SVC(Static Var Compensator) is commonly installed with conventional mechanically switched existing reactor or capacitor banks for wide range voltage control. The frequencies of switching of external banks have a great impact on the quality of voltage, but is limited since the life time of the external banks depends severely on the number of switching. So it is a complete multi-objective nonlinear optimization problem with conflicting objectives. This paper presents a method to determine the optimal coordination of SVC and external banks using genetic algorithm based on the multi-objective criteria. Optimal dead band and delay time of external banks is sought for reliable and efficient operation

  • This study was to determine optimal conditions for preparing Gangjung and Sanja. Texturometer and panel test were employed to evaluated products which were prepared under varying soaking time of glutinous rice. The results are found as follows; Examination of acceptibilities of products by the panel test showed that 48 hours of soaking was the most optimal. In acceptability ratings. the second went to 2 hours, the third 24 hours, the forth 120 hours, the fifth, 72 hours, and the sixth, 96 hours. However, there was no significant difference in acceptability among various products(P>0.05). The cohesiveness and the brittleness of the highest-grade products soaking in 48 hours showed 0.09$cm^{2}$, 1.25cm, respectively by texturometer. In therms of acceptability, the cohesiveness of high-grade products read between 0.06~0.7$cm^{2}$. The brittleness of products examined was in the range of between 0.36 and 1.41cm. No significant difference was found among products prepared under varying soaking time n cohesiveness and brittleness.

  • This paper deals with the CFD analysis of cavitating flow in the mixed-flow pump with the specific speed of 1.64 which suffers from a high level of noise and vibrations close to the optimal flow coefficient. The ANSYS CFX package has been used to solve URANS equations together with the Rayleigh-Plesset model and the SST-SAS turbulence model has been employed to capture highly unsteady phenomena inside the pump. The CFD analysis has provided a good picture of the cavitation structures inside the pump and their dynamics for a wide range of flow coefficients and NPSH values. Cavitation instabilities were detected at 70% of the optimal flow coefficient close to the NPSH3 value (NPSH3 is the net positive suction head required for the 3% drop of the total head of the pump).

  • In this paper, we have presented a Sequential Agglomerative Hierarchical Nested (SAHN) algorithm-based data clustering method in fuzzy inference system to achieve optimal performance of fuzzy model. SAHN-based algorithm is used to give possible range of number of clusters with cluster centers for the system identification. The axes of membership functions of this fuzzy model are optimized by using cluster centers obtained from clustering method and the consequence parameters of the fuzzy model are identified by standard least square method. Finally, in this paper, we have observed our model's output performance using the Box and Jenkins's gas furnace data and Sugeno's non-linear process data.
