  • The strength development of Flyash concrete containing various amount of Flyash (0, 10, 30, 50%) using as a cement replacement material was investigated two types of curing conditions, namely water curing at $21^{\cire}C$ and steam curing at $25^{\cire}C$ were adopted for this work, in water curing the strength development of Flyash concrete was always inferior to that of OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) concrete at early ages, although the differences were dependant up percentage of Flyash. The strength of Flyash concrete based on equivalent strength development at 28 days was also tested and the results exhibited that the strength was improved at early days, specially, the concrete containing 30% of Flyash, in steam curing for the same mix(270kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) the strength of Flyash concrete similar to that of OPC concrete, in other words. Flyash was strongly influenced by curing temperature in the strength development.

  • Nano particles have been gaining increasing attention and applied in many fields to fabricate new materials with novel functions due to their unique physical and chemical properties. In the present study two nano materials, namely nano silica (NS) and nano clay metakaolin (NMK) were partially replaced with ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The replacement level was varied from 0.5 to 2.0% in OPC and blended in cement mortar with a water cement ratio of 0.40. Mechanical property studies and durability experiments such as compressive strength, tensile strength, water absorption, depth of chloride penetration test. Nano silica was synthesized from rice husk ash and analyze the size using particle size analyzer. The results indicate that the compressive and tensile strength of the cement mortars containing nano materials were higher strength compared to the plain mortar with the same water cement ratio.

  • To analyze possibility for high performance concrete that massively displaces blast furnace slag, this study analyzed the characteristics of concrete by blast furnace slag displacement rate changes, and the results are summarized as follows. Firstly, as for fresh concrete characteristics, flow tended to increase and air amount decreased with increase in blast furnace slag displacement rate, and settling time was shown delayed. As for hardened concrete characteristics, in conditions where blast furnace slag displacement rate increased up to 50%, the compressive strength decreased below OPC at early age, however at age 28 days, its level was no less than that of OPC, and as for temperature rise by simple insulation, it decreased as displacement rate increased at early stage of hydration, but in the latter stage, hydration progress slowed down and hydration heat increased.

  • In this paper, $CO_2$ amount is evaluated considering repairing timing and unit $CO_2$ amount per repair method including various stage of material manufacturing, moving, and construction. Four mix proportions with mineral admixture are considered and repairing timing/numbers are simulated based on the results from Life 365 which can handle chloride penetration. Furthermore two repair methods (simple cover concrete replacement and replacement with electro-chemical method for removing chloride content) are considered and the related $CO_2$ emissions are evaluated. From the study, the case with high W/B (water to binder ratio) ratio shows smaller $CO_2$ emission in construction stage but it increases more rapidly with increasing number of repair. $CO_2$ emission considering electro-chemical method greatly increases with the increasing unit $CO_2$ for the repairing method. The numbers of jumping step (repairing number) are evaluated to be 9 for WB37-OPC, 18 for WB50-OPC, 4 for WB40-SG, and 7 for WB47-SG respectively. RC structures with the longer maintenance free period are evaluated to be advantageous for saving $CO_2$ emission.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of a solidifying agent for recycling the fine powder separated from the nuclear power plant decommissioned concrete as a solidifying agent(SA) for radioactive waste. In order to evaluate the performance of the solidifying agent, a powder simulating the fine powder of waste concrete separated from the dismantled concrete of a nuclear power plant was produced, and the main variables were the type of binder and the replacement ratio of zeolite. The solidifying agent was evaluated for fluidity performance, compressive strength, and leaching resistance to non-radioactive cesium. The compressive strength of SA increased as the zeolite replacement ratio increased, and the SA containing 5% or more of zeolite showed a compressive strength that was 1.4 to 1.7 times higher than the acceptance criteria. The cesium leaching index of all specimens was 6 or higher, satisfying the acceptance criteria, and the leaching index of SA was 1.47~1.63 times higher than that of OPC. In particular, the average leaching index after 28 days of the 5% zeolite-substituted solidifying agent was 9.15, which was improved by about 6.4% compared to OPC, and it was confirmed that the zeolite was effective in improving the leaching resistance to cesium ions by showing stable performance over the entire period.

  • In this paper, a ferrosilicon by-product was evaluated to confirm the feasibility of recycling it as supplementary cementitious material of ordinary Portland cement in concrete. Three different levels of replacement ratio (10 %, 20 % and 30 % of total binder) were applied to find which is the most beneficial to be used as a binder. Ferrosilicon concrete was initially assessed at setting time and compressive strength. Durability was evaluated by the resistance to chloride penetration test(RCPT) and alkali-silica reaction(ASR) with a comparison to silica fume concrete due to their similarity in chemical composition. The porosimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis along with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy give information on the microstructural characteristics of the ferrosilicon concrete. It was found that 10 % ferrosilicon concrete has higher strength while 20 %, 30 % have lower strength than OPC concrete. However, chemical resistance to chloride attack is higher when replacement is increased. Compared to silica fume, the durability of ferrosilicon might be less efficient however, it is obviously beneficial than OPC. High SiO2 content in ferrosilicon results in producing more C-S-H gel which could make denser pore structure. Most of the risk of alkali silica reaction to silicate binders through length change tests was less than 0.2 %, and both mortar using ferrosilicon and silica fume showed better resistance to alkali silica reaction as the substitution rate increased.Reuse of industrial waste rather than producing highly refined additives might reduce environmental load during manufacture and save costs.

  • The use of fly ash to replace a portion of cement has resulted significant savings in the cost of cement production. Fly ash blended cement concretes require a longer curing time and their early strength is low when compared to ordinary Portland cement(OPC) concrete. By adopting various activation techniques such as physical, thermal and chemical method, hydration of fly ash blended cement concrete was accelerated and thereby improved the corrosion-resistance of concrete. Concrete specimens prepared with 10-40% of activated fly ash replacement were evaluated for their open circuit potential measurements, weight loss measurements, impedance measurements, linear polarization measurements, water absorption test, rapid chloride ion penetration test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) test and the results were compared with those for OPC concrete without fly ash. All the studies confirmed that up to a critical level of 20-30% replacement; activated fly ash cement improved the corrosion-resistance properties of concrete. It was also confirmed that the chemical activation of fly ash better results than the other methods of activation investigated in this study.

  • The role of fly ash in concrete become impotent with finding the characteristics of fly ash in which it is used as cement replacement material. In this paper, corrosion test results obtained by two test methods such as the long-term exposure corrosion test and the accelerated corrosion test method, were compared to investigated the corrosion resistance between fly ash concrete and normal concrete. Corrosion initiation time was measured in two types of concrete, i.e., one mixed with fly ash(FA) and the other without admixture(OPC). The accelerated corrosion test was carried out by four case, i.e., two samples is a cyclic drying-wetting method combined without carbonation(case 1) and combined with carbonation(case 2), and the other two samples is a artificial seawater ponding test method combined without carbonation(case 3) and combined with carbonation(case 4). Whether corrosion occurs, it was measures using half-cell potential method. The ponding test combined without carbonation was most effective in accelerating corrosion time of steel bars. The results indicated that the corrosion of rebar embedded in concrete occurred according to the order of OPC, FA. The delay relative ratio of corrosion obtained by corrosion initiation time between FA and OPC is 1.04 to 1.27. Consequently, fly ash concrete as the age increases its corrosion resistance was improved compared with OPC concrete.
