Natural Regeneration in the Plantations of Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi in Yangyang-Gun, South Korea

  • The forest of Korea had been severely degraded since early 1900s until 1950s. Korean Government has successfully accomplished the reforestation works since 1960s. However, some plantations showed poor survival and growth caused by ignoring site characteristics in selecting plantation species and lack of tending works such as thinning. The natural regeneration of indigenous species, such as Quercus species and Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc., were examined in the plantations of Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc. and Larix kaempferi Fortune ex Gordon. Quercus species regenerated mainly by sprouting while P. densiflora regenerated naturally from a few mother trees that remained in the plantations. P. koraiensis showed poor survival ($IVI{\leq}25%$) and suppressed growth (height ${\leq}3m$ and $DBH{\leq}3cm$ at 20 year-old) by Quercus species or P. densiflora in the plantation areas, however had high survival ($IVI{\geq}70%$) and growth (8 m height and 14.1 cm DBH at 20 year-old) in areas where silvicultural practices were conducted. L. kaempferi showed good survival ($IVI{\geq}40%$) and growth (17.2 m height and 16.3 cm DBH at 30 year-old) mostly in valley areas, while it was nearly dead ($IVI{\leq}10%$) in ridge or ridge-slope areas and was replaced by indigenous species such as Quercus species ($IVI{\geq}25{\sim}55%$) or P. densiflora ($IVI{\geq}18{\sim}50%$).

Disappearing Forest Tree Species Diversity in Tropical Moist Deciduous Forest and Its Implications: A Case Study in the Madhupur Tract of Central Bangladesh

  • A study was conducted for indentifying the floral biodiversity of woody species by calculating four diversity indices using data collected from 4 stands of different age groups and disturbance regimes in two areas of Madhupur tract. Results showed that highest species diversity in the old growth secondary coppice forest (>60 years) under moderate anthropogenic disturbances of Madhupur National Park area (delete (D=0.74, H'=3.36) followed by old growth secondary forest stands (>40 years) under moderate disturbances at Bhawal National Park area (D=0.65, H'=2.81). Plant species diversity of the young enrichment plantations (<20 years and <15 years) under high anthropogenic disturbances in both the areas are much low (D=0.54 and H'=2.16 and D=0.52 and H'=1.92 respectively), which indicate high anthropogenic disturbances coupled with introduction of invasive exotics that are rival for endemic species are detrimental for conservation of biological diversity of tropical moist deciduous forests of Madhupur tract in Bangladesh.

Evaluating the Effect of Jellyfish Chips on the Survival and Growth of Pinus thunbergii Seedlings Planted in a Coastal Area of Ehime Prefecture, Japan

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of jellyfish chips in promoting the survival and growth of Pinus thunbergii seedlings in a coastal area based on a five-year field investigation from 2012 to 2016. Seedling survival rate was significantly higher in the treatment (96%) than in the control (75%) group in 2012. Furthermore, the height of five-year-old seedlings after plantation in 2012 was significantly greater in the treatment (3.41 m) than in the control (2.32 m) group (t=10.151; p-value<0.01). These results revealed that jellyfish chips can improve soil condition by enhancing moisture retention during the early growth stages and supplying nutrients to the seedlings over time. Our findings indicated that jellyfish chips could be used effectively as an organic fertilizer for growing coastal disaster prevention forests.

Effect of the Growth Period on Bioethanol Production from the Branches of Woody Crops Cultivated in Short-rotation Coppices

  • Woody crops cultivated in short-rotation coppices are attractive sources of lignocellulosic materials for bioethanol production, since they are some of the most abundant renewable resources. In this study, we evaluated the effects of the growth period on bioethanol production using short-rotation woody crops (Populus nigra ${\times}$ Populus maxiwiczii, Populus euramericana, Populus alba ${\times}$ Populus glandulosa, and Salix alba). The carbohydrate contents of 3-year-old and 12-year-old short-rotation woody crop branches were 62.1-68.5% and 64.0-67.1%, respectively. The chemical compositions of 3-year-old and 12-year-old short-rotation woody crop branches did not vary significantly depending upon the growth period. However, the 3-year-old short-rotation woody crop branches (glucose conversion: 26-40%) were hydrolyzed more easily than their 12-year-old counterparts (glucose conversion: 19-24%). Furthermore, following the fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysates from the crop branch samples (by Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCTC 7296) to ethanol, the ethanol concentration of short rotation coppice woody crops was found to be higher in the 3-year-old branch samples (~ 0.18 g/g dry matter) than in the 12-year-old branch samples (~ 0.14 g/g dry matter). These results suggest that immature wood (3-year-old branches) from short-rotation woody crops could be a promising feedstock for bioethanol production.

Heritability and Genetic Gains for Height Growth in 20-year-Old Korean White Pine in Korea

  • The objectives of this study were to examine the genetic variation of 20-year-old tree height and to estimate heritabilities and genetic gains of Korean white pine. Analysis of variance showed that families and family x block interaction had the significant (p=0.01) effects on tree height. However, family variation appears to be much greater than the variation due to family x block interaction. Individual tree heritability was higher ($h_I^2=0.73$) than family heritability, ($h_F^2=0.83$) therefore, combined selection showed the largest genetic gain (17.76%) in a given equal intensity of selection.

  • 1994년의 참나무류 교잡종자에 관하여 발아율 및 그후의 생육상황을 조사하였다. 저장화분의 교배에서 발아율이 zero인 조합이 많은 경향을 보였다. 2년 후의 생존율 및 묘목의 수고생장은 교배 조합에 따라서 차이가 있었다. 1991년과 1993년의 교배묘의 생육상황을 조사하였고, 5년생 묘목의 생존율은 71~100%, 3년생 묘목의 생존율은 33~100%였다. 교배 조합에 따라서 생존율에 차이가 보였으며, 생장(生長)이 저조한 왜성묘목(矮性苗木)이 많은 조합에서는 고사율(枯死率)이 많았다. Q. aliena를 교배모수(交配母樹)로 한 경우 5년생의 생장(生長)이 가장 우수하였다. 특히 Q. aliena ${\times}$ Q. serrata가 167.9cm(5년생)이고 Q. dentata ${\times}$ Q. aliena는 120.2cm(3년생)으로 생장(生長)이 양호(良好)하였다.

Visible injury and growth inhibition of black pine in relation to oxidative stress in industrial areas

  • The objective of our study was to investigate the major reasons for the different growth and visible injury on the needles of black pine growing in Ulsan and Yeocheon industrial complex areas, South Korea. After 12 years of growth, we collected climatic and air pollutant data, and analyzed soil properties and the physiological characteristics of black pine needles. Annual and minimum temperatures in Ulsan were higher than those in Yeocheon from 1996 to 2008. Ozone ($O_3$) was the pollutant in greatest concentration in Yeocheon, and whereas the $SO_2$ concentration in most areas decreased gradually during the whole period of growth, $SO_2$ concentration in Yeocheon has increased continuously since 1999, where it was the highest out of four areas since 2005. Total nitrogen and cation exchange capacity in Yeocheon soil were significantly lower than those of Ulsan. The average growth of black pine in Yeocheon was significantly smaller than that in Ulsan, and the growth of damaged trees represented a significant difference between the two sites. Photosynthetic pigment and malondialdehyde content and antioxidative enzyme activity in the current needles of black pine in Yeocheon were not significantly different between damaged and healthy trees, but in 1-year-old needles, there were significant differences between damaged and healthy trees. In conclusion, needle damage in Yeocheon black pine can be considered the result of long-term exposure to oxidative stress by such as $O_3$ or $SO_2$, rather than a difference in climatic condition or soil properties, and the additional expense of photosynthate needed to overcome damage or alleviate oxidative stress may cause growth retardation.

광릉 자연림에서의 교란체제와 수목의 재생 (Disturbance regime and tree regeneration in kwangnung natural forest)

  • Disturbance regime and tree regeneration were studied in kwangnung natural forest, an old-growth deciduous hardwood forest located in central korea. This forest is dominated by carpinus laxiflora, c.erosa, and quercus species. The area occupied by canopy gaps was 4.6% of the total forested area, and the mean size of canopy gaps was 92 $m^2$ with the maximum being 524 $m^2$. More than half of the gaps were less than four years old, and 3/4 of the gaps were created by death of only or two canopy trees, indicating the dominance of small-sized gaps in kwangnung forest. about half of the gap-makers were c. laxiflora, and another one third were quercus species. In contrast, the most frequent relacers were c. laxiflora while quercus species filled only 5% of the gaps, suggesting a future shift in tree species composition under the current disturbance regime. tree regeration was more conspicuous even in small gaps than non-gaps regardless of shade-tolerance of tree species, indicating the importance of gaps in tree regeneration.

시비수준에 따른 소나무, 낙엽송, 자작나무, 상수리나무 묘목의 생장변화 (Growth Response of Pinus densiflora, Larix leptolepis, Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Quercus acutissima Seedlings at Various Levels of Fertilization)

  • 우리나라에서 생산되고 있는 산림 수목용 비료 성분비율은 질소:인산;칼륨이 12:16:4의 1가지만 생산되고 있어, 수종별 생장특성을 고려하고 다양한 토양환경조건에 적합한 비료 성분비율의 개발이 요구되고 있다. 본 연구는 우리나라 주요 조림수종에 대한 비료의 적정 비료배합 비율을 구명하기 위하여 소나무, 낙엽송, 자작나무, 상수리나무 묘목을 대상으로 30 l의 pot에 1본씩 식재하고 여러 가지의 시비수준에 대한 생장반응을 조사하였다. 시비수준은 질소:인산:칼륨의 배합비율이 각각 2:2:1, 3:4:1, 3:8:1, 6:4:1, 3:4:2 및 무시비구(대조구)를 포함하고 있으며, 시비처리는 3년간 pot당 매년 30 g의 양을 기준으로 비료 배합비율에 따라 조제하여 시비하였다. 3년의 조사기간 동안 소나무와 낙엽송의 수고 및 근원경 생장은 3:8:1처리구에서 가장 높았으며, 3:4:1이나 2:2:1처리를 제외하고 시비처리수준 간에 생장 차이는 크지 않았다. 자작나무와 상수리나무 같은 낙엽활엽수종의 경우 수고 생장은 3:8:1 처리구, 근원경 생장은 6:4:1처리구가 타 시비처리에 비해 높은 생장 특성을 보였다. 조사된 4수종 모두 수고 및 근원경 생장은 3:8:1처리구 및 6:4:1처리구가 유의적인 높은 생장특성을 보이고 있으며, 3:4:1이나 2:2:1처리구의 경우 타 시비수준에 비해 낮은 생장특성이 있는 것으로 나타났다.

  • Background: The production method of ginseng seedlings for ginseng cultivation is very important to ensure healthy rooting system as well as high quality, and yield of the resultant plants. This study was carried out to compare the growth characteristics of 2-year-old ginseng plants that were produced from seedlings grown in self soil nursery (SSN), nursery soil (NS) or hydroponic culture (HC). Methods and Results: The shading prop used was composed of four-layered 4 polyethylene (blue 3 + black 1) shade screen. The management of main field was done by inserting oil cake (1,200 kg/10 a) and then allowing Sudan grass to grow for a year. Seedling transplantation was carried out on April 6. Root growth was measured on October 25. Root weight was observed to be excellent at 6.0 g, following SSN transplantation. Root length was 21.2 cm for HC seedlings, but these plants had a physiological disorder (i.e., rusty root), in 83.5% plants of this treatment. The ratio of PD/PT (protopanaxadiol saponins / protopanaxatriol saponins) was higher in NS seedlings. Plant analysis revealed that Fe content was lower in HC seedlings with high rustiness. The growth of 2-years-old ginseng was different following these varying seedling cultivation methods, but seedlings from NS were not different from those grown in SSN. Conclusions: For the propagation of 2-year-old ginseng plants, NS seedlings may be a good substitute for SSN seedlings.
