  • The aim of this paper is to measure the tappet rotation in OHC valve train system. Tappet is eccentric from the cam center to rotate for preventing the partial wear. The experimental system is developed to measure the tappet rotation by using the laser beam and optical fiber. The characteristics of tappet rotation is presented for various operating conctitions. Specially, it is observed that tappet is rotated at the base circle.

  • The behavior of belt tension in OHC drive timing belt system was investigated analytically and experimentally for (1)fixed and (2)automatic tensioner. From the numerical results it was found that the automatic tensioner makes the belt tension larger than those of the fixed tensioner. When the initial belt tension decreased due to the belt elongation, the belt tension of the fixed tensioner could decrease to near zero while the belt tension for the automatic tensioner maintained above zero by the tensioner spring. The mean valve and the difference between the maximum and the minimum belt tension for the automatic tensioner increased compared with those of the fixed tensioner. Also, the numerical results for a hydraulic tensioner showed that the hydraulic tensioner has the good parts of both tensioners; i.e., thesmaller amplitude in belt tension and the higher mean tension. Experimental results for the automatic and fixed tensioner of the OHC timing belt system were in agreement with the theoretical results.

  • [ $7{\beta}$ ]-Hydroxycholesterol (cholest-5-ene-3, 7-diol, $7{\beta}$-OHC) showed the cytotoxicity on human cervical carcinoma cells (HeLa), $10{\mu}M$ of 50% inhibitory concentration. We evaluated $7{\beta}$-OHC as the possibility of radiation sensitizer. The combination effect of $7{\beta}-OHC\;and\;{\gamma}$-irradiation was measured using colony forming assay and flow cytometer with propidium iodide and $DiOC_6$ stained cells, respectively. The combined treatment of $7{\beta}-OHC\;and\;{\gamma}$-irradiation did not show significant enhancing effects on HeLa cells.

  • RPA (Recursive Partition Averaging) method was proposed in order to improve the storage requirement and classification rate of the Memory Based Reasoning. That algorithm worked well in many areas, however, the major drawbacks of RPA are it's pattern averaging mechanism. We propose an adaptive OHC algorithm which uses the FPD(Feature-based Population Densimeter) to increase the classification rate of RPA. The proposed algorithm required only approximately 40% of memory space that is needed in k-NN classifier, and showed a superior classification performance to the RPA. Also, by reducing the number of stored patterns, it showed a excellent results in terms of classification when we compare it to the k-NN.

  • The characteristics of friction in direct acting OHC vane train system have been investigated by the comparison of experimental and theoretical results. A modified friction model was presented to calculate the friction force at cam/tappet contact. A simple experimental system was evaluated to measure the friction force and the camshaft driving torque. The friction force was measured by using the dynamic loadcell. Good agreement was found between theoretical and experimental results in friction force, but there was a little difference in driving torque.

  • A modeling technique is proposed for dynamic simulations of OHC valve trains with HLA(hydraulic lash adiuster). HLA is expressed by an air-oil mixture model considering HLA leak-down and aeraton effects. A compact nonlinear equation is derived which describe the short term dynamic behavior of the HLA. Valve spring is analyzed by a distributed parameter model including nonlinear characteristics in the spring surge phenomena. Global behavior of the remaining valve train is expressed by a lumped mass model. The experiental results prove that the simulation model developed here is accurate and useful for the dynamic simulations of OHC valve trains with HLA.

  • Oxysterols are oxygenated metabolites of cholesterol generated by serial enzymatic reactions during bile acid synthesis. Similar to cholesterol, oxysterols move rapidly to the intracellular region and modulate various cellular processes, such as immune cell responses, lipid metabolism, and cholesterol homeostasis. Different nuclear transcription factors, such as glucocorticoid, estrogen, and liver X receptors, can be modulated by oxysterols in multiple tissues. The most abundant oxysterol, 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC), is a well-known selective modulator that can either activate or suppress estrogen receptor activity in a tissue-specific manner. The contribution of 27-OHC in atherosclerosis development is apparent because a large amount of it is found in atherosclerotic plaques, accelerating the transformation of macrophages into foam cells that uptake extracellular modified lipids. According to previous studies, however, there are opposing opinions about how 27-OHC affects lipid and cholesterol metabolism in metabolic organs, including the liver and adipose tissue. In particular, the effects of 27-OHC on lipid metabolism are entirely different between in vitro and in vivo conditions, suggesting that understanding the physiology of this oxysterol requires a sophisticated approach. This review summarizes the potential effects of 27-OHC in atherosclerosis and metabolic syndromes with a special discussion of its role in metabolic tissues.

  • The present study was performed to evaluate combination effect of 7$\beta$-hydroxycholesterol (7$\beta$-OHC) and $\gamma$-radiation in NCI-H460 human lung cancer cells. 7$\beta$-OHC in combination with $\gamma$-irradiation has an enhanced effect in decreasing clonogenic survival and increasing cellular DNA damage. Pretreatment of cells with 7$\beta$-OHC enhanced radiation-induced apoptosis. Apoptosis of the cells by combined treatment of 7$\beta$-OHC and $\gamma$-irradiation was associated with reactive oxygen species generation and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, resulting in the activation of caspase 9 and caspase 3. The combined treatment also resulted in an increased G1 cell cycle distribution. These results indicate that 7$\beta$-OHC shows the additive effect of radiation sensitivity in human lung carcinoma cells in vitro.

  • A dynamic model of direct-acting OHC valve train system has been used to determine the load conditions in the system. The modified equations for calculating the friction forces between cam and HLA, and at a camshaft bearing have been defined considering the lubrication conditions. Then, to understand the frictional characteristics in the system, a parameter study has been performed. As the results of the analysis, valve spring stiffness and preload have great effects on the friction in the system, but the effects of other parameters are negligible. So, how to design the valve train system with respect to the reduction of friction is to minimize the valve spring stiffness and preload in the limit of satisfying the dynamic constraints.
