In this paper, we investigate throughput performance of OFDMA-based relay systems according to the "sub-cell coverage configuration" of the base station (RS) and the relay station (RS). RS is exploited for improved quality of the received signal with a tradeoff of additional radio resource consumption which may result in degradation of the throughput performance of the system. Therefore, "radio resource reuse" may be necessary for high performance in relay systems. However, it also causes system performance degradation since resource reuse between RSs incurs channel interference. Therefore, effective resource reuse also should be considered for "high throughput coverage configuration" when relays are employed. We relate the resource reuse patterns of neighboring RSs to sub-cell coverage configuration. We determine the sub-cell coverage of the system depending on the ratio of received signal-interference-noise-ratio (SINR) of the mobile station (MS) from the BS and RS, respectively. Simulations illustrate the throughput performance as the function of SINR ratio, and it has different optimal point depending on the resource reuse patterns. Therefore, the "resource reuse pattern" and the "effective sub-cell coverage configuration" should be considered together for the high throughput performance of the relay system.

In this paper, we propose an asynchonous ICI (Inter-Cell Interference) mitigation techniques for 3GPP LTE MIMO-OFDMA down-link receiver. An increasing in symbol timing misalignments may occur relative to sychronous network as the result of BS (Base Station) timing differences. Such symbol synchronization errors that exceed the guard interval or the cyclic prefix duration may result in MAI (Multiple Access Interference) for other carriers. In particular, at the cell boundary, this MAI becomes a critical factor, leading to degraded channel throughput and severe asynchronous ICI. Hence, many researchers have investigated the interference mitigation method in the presence of asynchronous ICI and it appears that the knowledge of the SCM (Spatial Covariance Matrix) of the asynchronous ICI plus background noise is an important issue. Generally, it is assumed that the SCM estimated by using training symbols. However, it is difficult to measure the interference statistics for a long time and training symbol is also not appropriate for MIMO-OFDMA system such as LTE. Therefore, a noise reduction method is required to improve the estimation accuracy. Although the conventional time-domain low-pass type weighting method can be effective for noise reduction, it causes significant estimation error due to the spectral leakage in practical OFDM system. Therefore, we propose a time-domain sinc type weighing method which can not only reduce the noise effectively minimizing estimation error caused by the spectral leakage but also implement frequency-domain moving average filter easily. By using computer simulation, we show that the proposed method can provide up to 3dB SIR gain compared with the conventional method.

In this two-part paper, we consider dynamic resource allocation in orthogonal frequency division multiple access(OFDMA). To reduce the reverse link overhead for channel quality information(CQI) feedback, a set of sub-carriers are tied up to a sub-channel to be used as the unit of CQI feedback, user-multiplexing and the corresponding power/rate allocation. Specifically, we focus on two sub-channel structures, either aggregated or distributed, where the SNR distribution over a sub-channel is modeled as Ricean in general, and the channel quality of a sub-channel is summarized as the mean and variance of channel gain envelop divided by noise standard deviation. Then, we develop a generalized two step channel/resource allocation algorithm, which uses the two statistical measurements, and analyze the spectral efficiency of the OFDMA system in terms of average frequency utilization. An extension to proportional fair algorithm will also be addressed. As confirmed by numerical results, the aggregated structure is preferred especially when intending aggressive link adaptation.

In this paper, we propose a receiver structure for frequency synchronization in OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) system which is considered as 3GPP LTE(Long Term Evolution) downlink. In general, OFDMA frequency synchronization consists of two parts: coarse synchronization and fine synchronization. We consider P-SCH (Primary-Synchronization Channel) and CP (Cyclic Prefix) of OFDMA symbol for coarse synchronization and fine synchronization, respectively. The P-SCH signal has two remarkable disadvantages that it does not have sufficiently many sub-carriers and its differential correlation characteristic is not good due to ZC (Zadoff Chu) sequence-specific property. Hence, conventional frequency synchronization algorithms cannot obtain satisfactory performance gain. In this paper, we propose a modified differential correlation algorithm to improve performance of the coarse frequency synchronization. Also, we introduce an effective PLL (Phase Locked Loop) structure to guarantee stable performance of the fine frequency synchronization. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm has superior performance to the conventional algorithms and the 2nd-order PLL is effective to track the fine frequency offset even in high mobility.

Packet-based mobile multimedia services for the Internet differ with respect to their resource requirements, performance objectives, and resource usage efficiencies. Nonetheless, each mobile terminal should support a variety of multimedia services, sometimes even simultaneously. This paper proposes a sub-channel allocation scheme based on multi-level priority for supporting mobile multimedia services in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) system. We attempt to optimize the system for satisfying the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of users and maximize the capacity of the system at the same time. In order to achieve this goal, the proposed scheme considers the Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) of co-sub-channels in adjacent cells, the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) grade of each sub-channel in the local cell on a per-user basis, and the characteristics of the individual services before allocating sub-channels. We used a simulation to evaluate our scheme with the performance measure of the outage probabilities, delays, and throughput.
In this paper, we propose P-SRA (Proposed Simplified Resource Allocation) algorithm for efficient resource allocation for real time traffic in MIMO-OFDMA (Multiple Input Multiple Output - Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) systems with V-BLAST (Vertical-Bell laboratories LAyered Space-Time coding) detector. The proposed P-SRA scheme employs efficient 3 step resource allocation algorithm with plain V-BLAST and no H-ARQ, however it achieves comparable performance of a MIMO-OFDMA system utilizing error compensated V-BLAST and H-ARQ IR scheme.
This study addresses the call admission control(CAC) problem for OFDMA wireless communication systems in which both subcarriers and power should be considered together as the system resources. To lessen the exccessive allocation of radio resources for protecting handoff calls, the proposed CAC allows the less data rate than their requirements to handoff calls. The CAC problem is formulated as a semi-Markov decision process(SMDP) with constraints on the blocking probabilities of handoff calls. Some extensive experiments are conducted to show the usefulness of the proposed CAC model.

We propose a hybrid multiple access (HMA) for uplink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, which combines two resource sharing schemes: a scheduling-based resource allocation (SBRA) scheme and a contentionbased resource allocation (CBRA) scheme. The SBRA scheme is appropriate for non-real time high data rate traffic, and, CBRA is appropriate for near-real time low/medium data rate traffic. Thus, the proposed HMA scheme supports various types of traffic. As a CBRA scheme, our proposed random frequency hopping (RFH)-OFDMA scheme was presented. Simulation results show that the proposed HMA yields the best performance among various resource allocation schemes for uplink OFDMA systems.

When the load in a multi-cell orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system is allowed to excessively increase in face of frequent handover, the cell area becomes smaller than the designed size, and thus continuity of quality of service (QoS) for handover requests cannot be guaranteed. To efficiently support the mobility of a mobile terminal (MT), we should adaptively cope with the resource demand of handover calls. This paper proposes a twofold resource-reservation scheme for OFDMA systems to guarantee continuity of QoS for various mobile multimedia services during MT handover from lightly to heavily loaded cells. Our twofold scheme attempts to guarantee service continuity for handover and to maximize resource allocation efficiency. We performed a simulation to evaluate our scheme in terms of outage probability, handover failure rate, total throughput, and blocking rate.

Combining OFDMA with MIMO is the key technology for the 4G mobile communication. OFDMA can relieve inherent difficulties of high-speed transmission. MIMO technology can be largely categorized into two techniques: one is STC for diversity gain and the other is SM for high frequency efficiency. In this paper, we depict various MIMO techniques of two transmit antenna and compare the computational complexity of decoding process for the techniques. Then, we analysis the performance of the techniques in the WiBro downlink environment based on OFDMA. We perfer ML algorithm which is the optimum performance and ZF algorithm of least computational complexity for SM detection.
