Chemical batch tests were conducted to investigate the amount of nutrients that were released from the wasted activated sludge during microwave heating. For this study, three types of activated sludge were obtained from $A_2/O$, MLE and oxidation ditch (OD) processes. Polyphosphate-accumulating organisms in the activated sludge have a unique trait: they releases phosphate from the cell when they are exposed to high temperatures. The sludge obtained from the $A_2/O$ process released the largest amount of phosphate, followed by those from the MLE and OD processes. The release of phosphate increased with increasing polyphosphate content in the sludge under strongly alkaline or acidic conditions. Furthermore, ammonia and heavy metals were released with phosphorous. The largest amount of ammonia was observed from the sludge obtained from the MLE process. The release of heavy metals strongly depends on the pH conditions. Therefore, the chemical analysis results strongly suggest that both phosphorus and ammonia react with $Mg^{2+}$ or $Ca^{2+}$ to form metal complexes such as magnesium ammonium phosphate or hydroxyapatite under alkaline conditions.
To study the developments and variations of unsafe behaviors in nuclear power plants thus reduce the possibility of human-related accidents, this paper, based on the Game Theory, focused on the changes in benefits of the Department of Management, Operational and Emergency in a nuclear power plant, and established the expected revenue functions of these departments. Additionally, the preventive measures of unsafe behaviors in nuclear power plants were also presented in terms of these 3 departments. Results showed that the violations of the Operation Department (OD) and the Emergency Department (ED) were not only relevant with the factors such as their own risks, costs, and the responsibility-sharing due to accidents, but also affected by the safety investments from the Management Department (MD). Furthermore, results also showed that the accident-induced responsibility-sharing of both the OD and the ED would rise, if the MD increased the investments in safety. As a result, the probability of violation behaviors of these 3 departments would be attenuated consciously, which would reduce the unsafe behaviors in the nuclear power plants significantly.
[Purpose] Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) administration reportedly recovers osteoporosis, a bone disorder associated with bone deficiency in postmenopausal women. However, the physiological mechanism of DHEA in osteoporosis remains elusive, especially in terms of intestinal calcium absorption. Therefore, we investigated the effect of DHEA administration on calcium absorption in ovariectomized (OVX) female rats using an estrogen receptor antagonist. [Methods] Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n=23, 6 weeks old) were randomized into three groups: OVX control group (OC, n=7), OVX with DHEA treatment group (OD, n=8), and OVX with DHEA inhibitor group (ODI, n=8) for 8 weeks. [Results] Intestinal calcium accumulation, as well as the rate of absorption, demonstrated no significant differences during the experimental period among investigated groups. The bone mineral density (BMD) of the tibia at the proximal metaphysis was higher in the OD group than that in the OC group (p<0.05); however, BMD of the ODI group showed no significant difference from investigated groups. Furthermore, the BMD of the tibia at the diaphysis did not significantly differ among these groups. [Conclusion] We revealed that DHEA administration does not involve intestinal Ca absorption, although this treatment improves BMD levels in OVX rats. These observations indicate that the effect of DHEA on the bone in postmenopausal women is solely due to its influence on bone metabolism and not intestinal calcium absorption.

Alarm system performance is a critical aspect of safety. While existing research has extensively examined the influence of acoustic attributes on alarm performance, consonance's impact remains largely uncharted territory. This study bridges this research gap by investigating the effect of consonance on alarm systems. We extend our investigation to encompass not only the sound characteristics of the alarm but also the acoustic qualities of the surrounding environment, recognizing their potential impact on alarm efficacy. Prior studies consistently link consonance to annoyance levels, resulting in a negative user experience. Thus, we explore the relationship between consonance and alarm system performance, with a particular focus on modulating annoyance as an explanatory factor. Utilizing an oddball paradigm, we categorized standard and oddball sounds into consonant and dissonant types, creating four sound combinations. Participants were asked to respond to the irregularly presented oddball sounds while ignoring the constantly presented standard sounds. Our results reveal significant differences between groups, with the Standard Consonant/Oddball Dissonant (SC/OD) group displaying notably slower response times than the Standard Dissonant/Oddball Consonant (SD/OC) group. This reaction time variation aligns with differences in annoyance levels, as the SC/OD group reports higher annoyance, suggesting that reaction time discrepancies may be linked to increased arousal due to heightened annoyance.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical properties and antibacterial activity of denture base resin with added silver sulfadiazine. Methods: Specimens were made from self-curing denture base resin and silver sulfadiazine as an inorganic antibacterial agent. For physical evaluation of the specimens, surface roughness, surface hardness, and contact angle were measured. Bacterial growth was assessed by optical densityat 600 nm (OD600) and colony forming units (CFU) measurements to confirm antibacterial activity. Results: There was no significant difference in surface roughness, surface hardness, and contact angle in the experimental group containing silver sulfadiazine compared to the control group. In contrast, the experimental group showed a significant decrease in antibacterial activity compared to the control group in terms of OD value. Analysis of CFU confirmed a significant decrease in colonies in the experimental group compared to the control group. Conclusions: Denture base resin containing silver sulfadiazine, an inorganic antibacterial agent, exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity without physical changes. In conclusion, the use of denture base resin containing inorganic antibacterial agents may be expected in the future.
Beta-1,3-glucanase is widely used in various biotechnological and industrial processes, with over-production required to enable versatile utilization. We examined the overexpression of ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase (EXGA) from Aspergillus oryzae using ${\delta}$-sequence-mediated integration. We constructed $pRS{\delta}$-exgA and $pRS{\delta}K$-exgA plasmids for integration of the EXGA gene into various chromosomes of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. These plasmids contain the ADH1 promoter for constitutive expression, a signal sequence (exoinulinase signal sequence [INU1 s.s]) for secretory production, and a ${\delta}$-sequence for integration of ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase. The $pRS{\delta}$-exgA plasmid was transformed into the S. cerevisiae $BY4742{\Delta}exg1$ strain, and ${\beta}$-1.3-glucanase was stably overexpressed and secreted. Another plasmid, $pRS{\delta}K$-exgA, was introduced into the S. cerevisiae $BY4742{\Delta}exg1$ (YKY082) strain, and overexpression of ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase was examined by inducible integration under geneticin selection. The activity of ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase increased in accordance with a rise in the geneticin concentration, with 0.8 mg/ml of geneticin suitable for overexpression of ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase. Subsequently, $pRS{\delta}K$-exgA was repeatedly transformed for sequential ${\delta}$-integration. The activity of ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase reached about 0.063 unit/ml/$OD_{600}$, 0.095 unit/ml/$OD_{600}$, 0.131 unit/ml/$OD_{600}$ and 0.165 unit/ml/$OD_{600}$ by the first, second, third, and fourth round of integration, respectively. According to the increase in the activity of ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase by sequential ${\delta}$-integration, the copy number (integration rate) of the EXGA gene also increased in various chromosomes. These results suggest that recombinant ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase activity can be sequentially increased by repeated ${\delta}$-sequence integration.
All times of minimum light for two eclipsing binaries V343 Aql and CX Aqr were collected and analyzed to study their orbital period variations. It was found that the orbital periods for both stars have varied in a cyclical way superposed on a parabola. A secular period decrease of $-261{\times}10^{-7}$ d/y for V343 Aql was calculated while CX Aqr showed a secular period increase of $+2.55{\times}10^{-8}$8 d/y. Possible causes of secular period variations for two systems were discussed. The cyclical period variation was interpreted as light-time effect due to a third body. The resultant period, semiamplitude and eccentricity of the light time orbit were calculated to be 30.3y, 0.0092d and 0.85, respectively, for V343 Aql and 33.0y, 0.0037d and 0.64, respectively, for CX Aqr. The properties of the third bodies suggested in V343 Aql and CX Aqr systems were discussed.
A hypothesis that Korean home-made fermented soybean products are brown-pigmented in large part by contaminated bacteria is proposed. Twenty six strains of bacteria forming brown pigments in the presence of L-tyrosine were isolated from home-made soybean paste. They were characterized and all were identified as strains of Bacillus subtilis. The isolates produced dark brown to brownish black pigmentation on yeast extract-peptone-glucose agar (YPGA) supplemented with 0.1% L-tyrosine in 72 hours but not on YPGA. They also caused different depress of lighter pigmentation on potato dextrose agar and nutrient agar. When an arbitrarily chosen pigmenting isolate was cultivated in a liquid medium supplemented with L-tyrosine, it began to produce pigments only after cell growth stopped. The tyrosinase enzyme was extracted and the enzyme activity was measured by using L-tyrosine and 3-hydroxytyrosine (L-dopa) as substrates. The crude enzyme preparation porduced pigments at rates of $2.1\;{\times}\;10^{-3}\;and\;5.0\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$ optical density units/min measured at 490㎚ for tyrosine and dopa, respectively. Possible content of L-tyrosine in a soybean paste formula was calculated.

An improved detection of radiation-induced paramagnetic faults was developed to identify the irradiation status of basil and clove. The effectiveness of different sample pretreatments, including freeze-drying (FD), oven-drying (OD), alcoholic-extraction (AE), and water-washing and alcoholic-extraction (WAE), were examined. All non-irradiated samples showed a single central signal ($g_0$=2.006), whereas radicals representing two additional side peaks ($g_1$=2.023 and $g_2$=1.986) with a mutual distance of 6 mT were detected in the irradiated samples. AE and WAE produced the best results for irradiated clove in terms of intensities of radiation-specific ESR signals and their ratios to the central signal. However, FD provided the highest intensities of radiation-specific ESR signals for basil, whereas their ratios to the major signal were better in the cases of AE and WAE. Signal noise, particularly due to $Mn^{2+}$ signals, was observed, whereas it decreased in AE and WAE pretreatments. Based on our results, AE and WAE can improve the detection conditions for radiation-specific ESR signals in irradiated samples.
The effects of culture depth (2-10 cm) and cell density on the growth rate and biomass productivity of Chlorella sp. XQ-200419 were investigated through the use of a self-designed open circular pond photobioreactor-imitation system. With increases in culture depths from 2 to 10 cm, the growth rate decreased significantly from 1.08 /d to 0.39 /d. However, the biomass productivity only increased slightly from 8.41 to 11.22 $g/m^2/d$. The biomass productivity (11.08 $g/m^2/d$) achieved in 4 cm culture with an initial $OD_{540}$ of 0.95 was similar to that achieved in 10 cm culture with an initial $OD_{540}$ of 0.5. In addition, the duration of maximal areal productivity at a 4 cm depth was prolonged from 1 to 4 days, a finding that was also similar to that of the culture at a 10 cm depth. In both cases, the initial areal biomass densities were identical. Based on these results and previous studies, it can be concluded that the influence of culture depth and cell density on areal biomass productivity is actually due to different areal biomass densities. Under suitable conditions, there are a range of optimal biomass densities, and areal biomass productivity reaches its maximum when the biomass density is within these optimal ranges. Otherwise, biomass productivity will decrease. Therefore, a key factor for high biomass productivity is to maintain an optimal biomass density.
