  • In order to select the water flooding-tolerant trees among Korean oaks, we cultivated the sapling of 6 deciduous oak species, Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. dentata, Q. aliena and Q. serrata, under the water flooding treatment and the control, and analysed the growth difference among them. For comparing the growth between treatment and control, we measured 13 morphological and ecological traits, such as leaf Leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, shoot length, stem length, stem diameter, root length, plant length, leaf weight, stem weight, root weight, plant weight. Q. serrata have no growth difference between water flooding treatment and control, but the rest 5 species showed the growth reduction in water flooding treatment. Tolerance of oak species to water flooding was risen in order of Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. dentata, Q. aliena and Q. serrata. Thus, among Korean deciduous oaks, it is desirable to plant Q. serrata for flood plain restoration of river.

  • Wood chips of oak (Quercus mongolica) and larch (Larix leptolepis) were treated with a relatively low pressure steam(10~20 kg/$cm^2$) for 10~20 min (first-stage),and then increased pressure up to 30kg/$cm^2$ for 30 second (second-stage), and steam pressure was released intentionally to air. Main components of exploded wood were separated with 1% NaOH and hot water-methanol. In this work, the more effective low pressure explosion condition and separation method of wood main component were investigated. The results can be summarized as follows; 1. The yields of exploded wood were generally decreased with increasing steam pressure and reaction time. 2. The proper condition of steam explosion in low pressure for the separation of wood main components was 15kg/$cm^2$-10 min, in oak wood and 20kg/$cm^2$-10 min., then 30kg/$cm^2$-0.5 min, in larch wood. 3. The 23% of elude hemicellulose was obtained from the exploded oak wood which was treated with optimal condition. 4. In the case of hot water-methanol extraction, the ratio of delignification was 14~23% in the exploded larch wood and 42~55% in the exploded oak wood. 5. The methanol was more effective than 1% sodium hydroxide solution for extraction of lignin from exploded wood.

  • The characteristic changes in weight, moisture content, and dimension at the early adsorptiondesorption stage of PEG-treated Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi), mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica) and sargent cherry (Prunus sargentii) woods were investigated. The wood samples were treated with PEG 1000, 2000 and 4000, and conditioned at the relative 98%, 65% and 20% for humidities of one week. The weight of Korean pine, Japanese larch and sargent cherry woods treated with PEG 1000 and 2000 during the adsorption-desorption was significantly changed, but mongolian oak was slightly changed. Moisture content was highly Moisture content was highly fluctuated by the change of relative humidity in the three species except oak wood. Although the weight of PEG-treated wood; however, changes in dimension could be prevented by PEG treatment in all species tested.

  • For the allergy patient who needs to know the situation about the extent of pollen risk, the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences developed a pollen forecasting system based on the Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling (CMAQ). In the old system, pollen emission from the oak was estimated just based on the airborne concentration and meteorology factors, resulted in high uncertainty. For improving the quality of current pollen forecasting system, therefore the estimation of pollen emission is now corrected based on the observation of pollen emission at the oak forest to better reflect the real emission pattern. In this study, the performance of the previous (NIMS2014) and current (NIMS2016) model system was compared using observed oak pollen concentration. Daily pollen concentrations and emissions were simulated in pollen season 2016 and accuracy of onset and end of pollen season were evaluated. In the NIMS2014 model, pollen season was longer than actual pollen season; The simulated pollen season started 6 days earlier and finished 13.25 days later than the actual pollen season. The NIMS2016 model, however, the simulated pollen season started only 1.83 days later, and finished 0.25 days later than the actual pollen season, showing the improvement to predict the temporal range of pollen events. Also, the NIMS2016 model shows better performance for the prediction of pollen concentration, while there is a still large uncertainty to capture the maximum pollen concentration at the target site. Continuous efforts to correct these problems will be required in the future.

  • We monitored the occurrence of fungal species on bed-logs inoculated with oak mushroom (Lentinula edodes) and the environmental conditions of temperature and humidity in the cultivation houses during monsoon. Six fungal species, viz., Cladosporium sp., C. cladosporioides, C. anthropophilum, Pleosporales sp., Trichoderma harzianum, and Acremonium sp., wereidentified from the cultivation houses located in Jangheung, Jeonnam province. This identification was confirmed by performing nucleotide sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer and 28S rDNA regions. Our study presents significant findings that can help in preventing fungal damage induced by inappropriate temperature and humidity in oak mushroom cultivation houses.

  • The objective of this study was to manufacture the wood based roughage using lumber from thinning of oak and pitch pine (Pinus rigida). And the study also aimed to investigate a feed value evaluation of wood based roughages. To investigate the optimization condition of steam-digestion treatment for roughage, the wood chips of oak and pitch pine were steam-digestion treated at $160^{\circ}C$ under pressure 6 atm depending on treatment times (60 min, 90 min and 120 min) followed by the content of essential oils analyzed. The essential oil content of steam-digestion treated roughages for 90 min and 120 min were under 0.1 mL/kg. The evaluation of feed value was carried out from steam-digestion treated roughages for 90 min through feed chemical composition analysis, NRC (National research Council) modeling, ruminal degradability analysis and relative economic value analysis. The feed chemical compositions including DM (dry mater), CP (crude protein), EE (ether extract), NDF (neutral detergent fiber), ADF (acid detergent fiber), ADL (acid detergent lignin), NFC (nonfiber carbohydrate) in oak roughage were 95.4, 1.36, 3.11, 90.05, 83.85, 17.33, 6.50%, respectively, and in pitch pine roughage were 94.37, 1.33, 5.48, 87.89, 86.88, 30.56, 6.32%, respectively. Both roughages showed low level of protein and very high level of NDF. The TDN (total digestible nutrient) levels using NRC (2001) model in oak and pitch pine roughages were 40.55, 31.22%, respectively. The ruminal in situ dry matter degradability was higher in oak roughage (23.84%) than in pitch pine roughage (10.02%). The economic values of oak and pitch pine rough-ages were 235, and 210 \, respectively.

  • The structures of oak stands were studied in relation to their productivity. Three plots classified by the site quality following to altitude, were selected on the oak stand located at Naryongri Eunsanmyun Buyeogun. The site qualities of the stand studied were generally estimated to be moderate in respect to some soil physical and chemical properties. Quercus variabilis was dominant species in the vegetation composition of the stand studied. The crown densities of the stand were varied from 65.4% in plot I to 78.2% in plot III and the parts, occupied with oak trees, ranged from 44.4% in plot I to 65.9% in plot III in the density. In the contrast to crown density, the growing stocks of oak trees ranged from $3.937m^3$ in plot I (73.4% of plot total) to $2.075m^3$ in plot III (84.3% of plot total). The occupied ratios, measured by crown class, exhibited dissimilarity between crown projection area and volume, and also the ratios brought into different patterns by plot. Highly significant correlations were proved between crown projection areas and volumes of individual oak trees by plot, but not proved in the relations by crown class. The cumulative growth, current annual increment and mean annual increment displayed various patterns by plot and by crown class in the heights, D. B. H. s and volumes of oak trees. The maximum values of current annual increment of height were generally recorded in 10 to 20 years, earlier than those of D. B. H. The mean annual increment of height, D. B. H. and volume maintained similar levels after about 10 years and fluctuated irregularly. The crown projection area and volume following to thinning decreased in the order of the thinning methods of grade A < grade B < crown thinning$90m^3/ha$ in about 40 years in the productivity of volume of the oak stand studied.

  • After examining the temperature change in berry sawdust during the fermentation period and the developmental characteristics of Protaetia brevitarsis larvae according to the fermentation period, it was found that the fermentation speed was faster than with oak sawdust and a fermentation period of 50-70 days was the most suitable for larval growth. During the fermentation period, the temperature change in sawdust was quickly fermented as berry sawdust passed a high temperature of more than 60℃ in the early stages of fermentation compared to fermentation speed of oak sawdust, and stabilized within 60 days. In individual breeding, the total growth period of P. brevitarsis larvae by fermentation period was the longest at 104.8 days after fermentation for 30 days, which was a significant difference. There was no difference in the growth period between 50 and 90 days of fermentation. Oak sawdust tended to be the same as berry sawdust, but the larval development period was approximately 30 days. The developmental period by larval stage differed greatly between berries and oak sawdust. The weight of larvae according to the fermentation period of sawdust was the lowest after 90 days of fermentation, with a long fermentation period for both berry and oak sawdust, and there was no difference in the 30-70 days fermentation periods. The survival rate was more than 95% in individual breeding, and there was no difference among the fermentation periods. However, in group breeding, the survival rate was lower than that of individual breeding and was lowest at 90 days of fermentation. In group breeding, the ratio of larvae weighing ≥ 2.5 g, which is the standard for shipment, was 85% after 30-70 days of fermentation of berry sawdust, but was lower at 70% after 90 days of fermentation, which was a significant difference. The survival rate with oak sawdust showed the same trend, which was approximately 10% lower than that with sawdust. In addition, the larvae from the berry sawdust weighed > 2.5 g in 40-60 days, while it took 75-105 days with oak-fermented sawdust.

  • As a basic research for the development of the automatic grading and sorting system for dried oak mushrooms, the device to acquire both cap and gill side images of mushroom has been developed and neural network based side recognition and quality grading has been proposed via inputting both side images. 20 quality grades have been selected considering the requirement of grade classifications imposed by the mushroom company. Developed DC motor driven‘V’type reversing device for the image acquisition of both side images of mushroom showed more than 95% success. Most error was caused by very small size mushrooms with a radius of around 1cm. However, it required a further research to reduce the reversing time. Grading and side recognition were performed via inputting normalized size factors and average gray levels of $8{\times}8$ grids converted from the raw images of both surfaces to the multi-layer back propagation(BP) network. Accuracy of the grading showed about 88.5% and the total grading time including reversing operation was around 2 seconds.
