In this paper, multiple gate locations and process conditions under concern are automatically optimized by considering robustness to minimize the injection pressure required to mold an automotive dashboard. Computer simulation-based experiments using orthogonal arrays(OA) and a design-range reduction algorithm are consolidated into an iterative search scheme, which is then used as a tool for the optimization process. The robustness of a design is evaluated using an OA-based simulation of process fluctuations due to noise as well as the signal-to-noise ratio. The optimal design solution for the automotive dashboard shows that the robustness of the injection pressure is significantly improved when compared to the initial design. As a result, both the die clamping force and the pressure distribution in the part cavity are also much improved in terms of their robustness.

The variable-swash-plate compressor has recently been adopted as a vehicle compressor to improve fuel efficiency. The rotation torque in the variable-swash-plate compressor and the pressure-affected piston have a great influence on the swash-plate design and deformation. This paper suggests the optimal configuration design by using Chebyshev orthogonal polynomial and optimization techniques. The orthogonal array (OA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques and response surface optimization, are employed to determine the main effects and their optimal design variables. According to the optimal design, we confirm an effective design variable in swash plate and explain the optimal solution, the usefulness for satisfying the constraints of maximum stress and deformation.

Mahalanobis Taguchi System (MTS) is developed by Genishi Taguchi as a part of his quality engineering methodology. The basic idea of Taguchi's quality engineering is looking for the way of effectiveness of analyzing multivariate system. In the MTS, with the standardized variables of healthy normal data, Mahalanobis Distance(MD) calculated and that can be discriminate between normal and abnormal objects. If this discrimination process is successful, next step is optimization which is try to reduce number of attributes by neglecting less effective attributes to MD. Orthogonal Array (OA) and Signal to Noise ratio (S/N) are used to evaluate the amount contribution of each attribute to the MD. Wisconsin Breast Cancer study, from machining learning repository at University of California at Irvine, used for examining the discriminant ability of MTS.

The mortality rate of car-pedestrian accidents is quite high, compared to the frequency of accidents. Researches on pedestrian protection are being actively performed worldwide. The A-pillar and lower part of the wind shield cause the most serious damage to the pedestrians. Typical devises to protect the pedestrians are the hood lift system and pedestrian airbag. The design of such devices for an sport utility vehicle is performed based on a design process using design of experiments (DOE). The design results are obtained by an orthogonal array (OA), analysis of mean (ANOM) and analysis of variance (ANOVA). A metamodel is also used in the design process.

In this study, we propose the method of optimally changing material of BIW for minimizing weight while satisfying vehicle requirements on static stiffness. First, we formulate a material selection optimization problem. Next, we establish the CAE procedure of evaluating static stiffness. Then, to enhance the efficiency of design work, we integrate and automate the established CAE procedure using a commercial process integration and design optimization (PIDO) tool, PIAnO. For effective optimization, we adopt the approach of metamodel based approximate optimization. As a sampling method, an orthogonal array (OA) is used for selecting sampling points. The response values are evaluated at the sampling points and then these response values are used to generate a metamodel of each response using the linear polynomial regression (PR) model. Using the linear PR model, optimization is carried out an evolutionary algorithm (EA) that can handle discrete design variables. Material optimization result reveals that the weight is reduced by 44.8% while satisfying all the design constraints.

In this study, we propose the method of optimally selecting material of front pillar (A-pillar) and package tray for minimizing weight while satisfying vehicle requirements on static stiffness and dynamic stiffness. First, we formulate a material selection optimization problem. Next, we establish the CAE procedure of evaluating static stiffness and dynamic stiffness. Then, to enhance the efficiency of design work, we integrate and automate the established CAE procedure using a commercial process integration and design optimization (PIDO) tool, PIAnO. The response values are evaluated at the sampling points and then these response values are used to generate a metamodel of each response using the radial basis function regression (RBFr). Using the RBFr models, optimization is carried out an evolutionary algorithm that can handle discrete design variables. Material optimization result reveals that the weight is reduced by 49.8% while satisfying all the design constraints.

Recently, problems with excessive vibration of the radar masts of large bulk carriers and crude oil tankers have frequently been reported. This paper explores a design method to avoid the resonance of a radar mast installed on a large ship using various design of experiment (DOE) methods. A local vibration test was performed during an actual sea trial to determine the excitation sources of the vibration related to the resonant frequency of the radar mast. DOE methods such as the orthogonal array (OA) and Latin hypercube design (LHD) methods were used to analyze the Pareto effects on the radar mast vibration. In these DOE methods, the main vibration performances such as the natural frequency and weight of the radar mast were set as responses, while the shape and thickness of the main structural members of the radar mast were set as design factors. From the DOE-based Pareto effect results, we selected the significant structural members with the greatest influence on the vibration characteristics of the radar mast. Full factorial design (FFD) was applied to verify the Pareto effect results of the OA and LHD methods. The design of the main structural members of the radar mast to avoid resonance was reviewed, and a normal mode analysis was performed for each design using the finite element method. Based on the results of this normal mode analysis, we selected a design case that could avoid the resonance from the major excitation sources. In addition, a modal test was performed on the determined design to verify the normal mode analysis results.

The motion of living organisms such as birds, fishes, and insects, has been analyzed for the purpose of the design of MAV(Micro Air Vehicle) and NAV(Nano Air Vehicle). In this research, natural motion was considered to be applied to the determination of the geometry and motion of AUV(Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). The flapping motion of a number of hydrofoil shapes in AUV was studied, and at the same time, the optimization of the hydrofoil shape and flapping motion was executed that allow the highest thrust and efficiency. The harmonic motion of plunging and pitching of NACA 4 digit series models, was used for the numerical analysis. The meta model was made by using the kriging method in Optimization method and the experimental points of 49 were extracted for the OA(Orthogonal array) in DOE(Design of experiments). Parametric study using this experimental points was conducted and the results were applied to MGA(Micro Genetic Algorithm). The flow simulation model was validated to be an appropriate tool by comparing with experimental data and the optimized shape and motion of AUV was turned out to produce highest thrust and efficiency.
This work performed to analyses the impact of hooked end steel fibres on the mechanical properties of high performance concrete. The mechanical properties considered incorporate compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength. Taking in to thought parameters, such as, volume fraction of fibres, fibre aspect ratio and grade of concrete, a logical strategy called Taguchi technique was utilized to discover the ideal blend of factors. L9 Orthogonal Array (OA) of Taguchi network comprising of three variables and three dimensions is utilized in this work. The evaluations of concrete considered were M60, M80 and M100. M60 contained 15% of metakaolin as bond swap though for M80 it was 5% of metakaolin and for M100 it was 10% metakaolin and 10% of silica smolder. The volume portion of fiber was fluctuated by 0.5%; 1% and 1.5% and the viewpoints proportions considered were 50, 60 and 80. The test outcomes demonstrate that incorporation of steel fibres enhance significantly the the strength characteristics of concrete, predominantly the splitting tensile strength and flexural strength. In light of relapse investigation of the test information scientific models were produced for compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength of the steel fibre-reinforced high performance concrete.
