Effect of Heat Treatment on the Adhesive Strength of Electoless Nickel Deposits (무전해법으로 Slide Glass 위에 도금된 Ni층의 접착력에 미치는 열처리의 영향)

  • Surface modification before coating nickel by coupling agents and/or etchant of glass did not provide enough adhesive strength of electroless nickel deposits on glass. Effect of heat treatments on hardness as well as adhesion of nickel deposits was studied by using tape test for adhesion, nanoindenter for hardness and glancing angle x-ray diffractometer (GAXRD) for phase characterization. Heat treatment improved hardness as well as adhesion. XRD results give that the improvements of adhesion and hardness are due to the formation of $NiSiO_4$ around the interface between the nickel deposits and the glass and the precipitation of $Ni_3P$ causing precipitation hardening, respectively. Study for polycrystalline 3C-SiC thin films growth by LPCVD (LPCVD에 의한 다결정 3C-SiC 결정성장에 관한 연구)

  • The polycrystalline 3C-SiC thin films heteroepitaxially grown by LPCVD method using single precursor 1,3-disilabutane at $850^{\circ}C$. The crystallinity of the 3C-SiC thin film was analyzed by XRD and FT-IR. Residual strain was investigated by Raman scattering. The surface morphology was also observed by AFM and voids or dislocations between SiC and $SiO_2$ were measured by SEM. The grown poly 3C-SiC thin film is very good crystalline quality, surface like mirror, and low defect and strain. Therefore, the polycrystalline 3C-SiC is suitable for harsh environment MEMS applications.

  • Planar images of OH and $O_{2}$ with tunable KrF excimer laser which has a) 0.5 $cm^{-1}$ / linewidth, b) 0.5 nm tuning range, c) 150 mJ pulse energy, and d) 20 ns pulse width are obtained to determine spatial distributions of OH and $O_{2}$ in premixed $C_{3}$H$_{8}$ /O$_{2}$ flame. The technique is based on planar laser induced pre-dissociative fluorescence(PLIPF) in which collisional quenching is almost avoided because of the fast pre-dissociation. Dispersed LIPF spectra of OH and $O_{2}$ are also measured in a flame in order to confirm the excitation of single vibronic state of OH and $O_{2}$, OH and $O_{2}$ are excited on the P$_{2}$(8) line of the $A^{2}$.SIGMA.$^{+}$(v'= 3)-X$^{2}$.PI.(v'||'||'&'||'||'quot;= 0) band and R(17) line of the Schumann-Runge band B$^{3}$.SIGMA.$_{u}$ $^{[-10]}$ (v'= 0)- X$^{3}$.SIGMA.$_{g}$ $^{[-10]}$ (v'||'||'&'||'||'quot;= 6), respectively. Dispersed OH and $O_{2}$ spectra show an excellent agreement with simulated spectrum and previous works done by other group respectively. It is confirmed that OH widely distributed around flame front area than $O_{2}$.

  • Flue gas recirculation(FGR) is an effective combustion technique for reducing nitrogen oxides(NOx) and is applied in various fields of low-pollution combustion. Continuing the previous study, a numerical analysis was conducted to identify changes of flame characteristics and NOx formation mechanism with applying FGR technique in CH4/air premixed counterflow flames. NOx emitted was divided into four main reaction paths(thermal NO, prompt NO, N2H and N2O), showing relatively the production rate of NO with the recirculation ratio. As a result, thermal NO contributed greatly to the overall NO whereas the effect of N2H was minimal. In addition, emission index of NO was compared as the recirculation ratio increased by modifying the UC San Diego mechanism to examine the contribution of thermal NO.

An Experimental Study on the Hepatoprotective Effect of Gokajisilsosiho-Tang (곡아지실소시호탕(穀芽枳實小柴胡湯)의 간보호작용(肝保護作用)에 관(關)한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究))

  • This study was performed to elucidate the effects of Gokajisilsosiho-Tang(GJST) on the lactic dehydrogenase(LDH) release, cell viability and activity, lipid peroxidation, DNA synthesis and the changes of total protein synthesis and GSH changes in vivo and in vitro in rat cultured hepatocytes from hydrogen peroxide$(H_2O_2)$-induced injury. The GJST extract had not an effect on cytotoxicity in all experimental results. The treatment of GJST extract of $160{\mu}g/ml$, $320{\mu}g/ml$ showed the significant effect to decrease LDH leakage induced by t-BHP in cultured rat hepatocytes. The higher concentration of GJST extract than $160{\mu}g/ml$, showed the inhibitory effect on decreasing cell viability induced by t-BHP. The treatment of t-BHP to rat cultured hepatocytes resulted in a concentration dependent increase in TBARS, in the presence of GJST extract the production of TBARS induced by hydrogen peroxide was inhibited concentration dependently, significantly inhibited at $80{\mu}g/ml$ of GJST extract and above. The GJST extract simutaneously present with t-BHP prevented the loss of total protein and GSH in a concentration dependent manner. These results suggested that GJST extract may play a hepatoprotective role in oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide and a therapeutic potential of inhibiting liver injury.

Characteristics of polycrystalline 3C-SiC thin films grown on AlN buffer layer for M/NEMS applications (AlN 버퍼층위에 성장된 M/NEMS용 다결정 3C-SiC 박막의 특성)

  • This paper describes the characteristics of poly (polycrystalline) 3C-SiC grown on $SiO_{2}$ and AlN substrates, respectively. The crystallinity and the bonding structure of poly 3C-SiC grown on each substrate were investigated according to various growth temperatures. The crystalline quality of poly 3C-SiC was improved from resulting in decrease of FWHM (full width half maximum) of XRD and FT-IR by increasing the growth temperature. The minimum growth temperature of poly 3C-SiC was $1100^{\circ}C$. The surface chemical composition and the electron mobility of poly 3C-SiC grown on each substrate were investigated by XPS and Hall Effect, respectively. The chemical compositions of surface of poly 3C-SiC films grown on $SiO_{2}$ and AlN were not different. However, their electron mobilities were $7.65{\;}cm^{2}/V.s$ and $14.8{\;}cm^{2}/V.s$, respectively. Therefore, since the electron mobility of poly 3C-SiC films grown on AlN buffer layer was two times higher than that of 3C-SiC/$SiO_{2}$, a AlN film is a suitable material, as buffer layer, for the growth of poly 3C-SiC thin films with excellent properties for M/NEMS applications.

Impact of Single Dose Praziquantel Treatment on Schistosoma haematobium Infection among School Children in an Endemic Nigerian Community

  • Schistosomiasis is prevalent in Nigeria, and the foremost pathogen is Schistosoma haematobium, which affects about 29 million people. Single dose of the drug praziquantel is often recommended for treatment but the efficacy has not been documented in certain regions. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the impact of single dose praziquantel treatment on S. haematobium infection among school children in an endemic community of South-Western Nigeria. Urine samples were collected from 434 school children and 10 ml was filtered through Nucleopore filter paper before examination for egg outputs by microscopy. The prevalence was 24.9% at pre-treatment. There was no statistically significant difference for the prevalence of infection between males (14.7%) and females (10.2%), although the mean egg count for the females (9.87) was significantly more (P<0.05) than the males (6.06). At 6 and 12 months post-treatment there was 74.4% and 86.4% reduction in the mean egg count, respectively. Interestingly, an increased prevalence of infection from 2.1% at 6 months to 7.7% at 12 months post-treatment was observed, nonetheless the mean egg count was reduced to 0.27 at 12th month from 1.98 at 6 months post-treatment. Resurgence in the prevalence rate between 6 and 12 months post-treatment with praziquantel is herein reported and the need for a follow-up treatment in endemic areas for adequate impact on schistosomiasis control is discussed.

Insulin-like and Insulin Sensitizing Effects of Modified Anti-diabetic Remedies in 3T3-L1 Fibroblasts (소갈 치료 처방 가감이 3T3-L1 Adipocytes에서 인슐린 유사성과 인슐린 민감성에 미치는 영향)

  • Based on the data from our previous studies, four new diabetic remedies were composed with the addition of Coicis Semen into Okchun-san (OCH), Commelinae Herba into Gangsim-tang (GST) , Scrophulariae Radix into Sunki-san (SKS), and Erythrinae Cortex into Yukmijihuang-hwan (YMG). The water extracts of these new remedies were treated in 3T3-L1 fibroblasts and adipocytes in order to investigate insulin-like substances and insulin sensitizers, respectively. With and without differentiation inducers, unmodified SKS (SKS-O) treatment induced 3T3-L1 fibroblasts into adipocytes more than the control. However, without inducers, YMG treatment, but not SKS, induced the differentiation more than the control among modified remedies. Without inducers, SKS, OCH as well as YMG increased the induction of differentiation from 3T3-L1 fibroblasts into adipocytes, compared to the control. The treatment of OCH and YMG with 1 ng/mL insulin increased glucose uptake much more than only insulin 1 ng/mL treatment. Thus, OCH and YMG contained increased insulin actions. In conclusions, the modified remedies, OCH and YMG, contained insulin-like substances and insulin sensitizers, and they can be improved the hypoglycemic effects.

  • Cellulose diacetate (CDA) and calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) biodegradable composites were prepared by melt mixing in a twin screw extruder and their physical properties were examined. In the melt processing, triacetine and epoxidized soybean oil were added to the composites as a plasticizer and lubricant, respectively. The optimal conditions for the preparation of the biodegradable composites were determined. Acetic acids ($CH_3COOH$) were made by pyrolysis acetyl group ($-OC (O)CH_3$) of CDA and TA in melt processing. Increasing the amount of $CaCO_3$ in the composites resulted in further enhancement of the $CH_3COOH$ absorption effects. The tensile strength and elongation were decreased, and Young's modulus and $T_g$ value increased with increasing amount of $CaCO_3$.

Extracts of Desmodii Herba Inhibits of TPA-induced invasion in MCF-7 Human Breast Carcinoma Cells (유방암세포에서 광금전초 추출물의 암전이 억제 효과)

  • It is well known that Desomodii Herba (DH) has an effect to eliminate dampness, relieve jaundice and to clear away toxic material, relieve swelling in Korean Medicine. However, the effect of DH on breast cancer invasion is unknown. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of DH extracts (DHE) on 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) expression and cell invasion, as well as the molecular mechanisms involved in MCF-7, human breast cancer cells. DHE inhibits TPA-induced MMP-9 protein and mRNA expressions in a dose-dependent fashion. DHE also inhibited the TPA-induced transcriptional activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-${\kappa}B$). These results indicate that DHE-mediated inhibition of TPA-induced MMP-9 expression and cell invasion involves the suppression of NF-${\kappa}B$ pathway in MCF-7 cells.
