  • Nylons were synthesized by anionic polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$--caprolactam while varying the content of catalyst. Polymerization rates, molecular weights, mechanical properities and frictional properties of the nylons were investigated. As the ratio of catalyst to initiator was increased up to 1.0%, the polymerization rate, conversion and molecular weight were found to increase, and mechanical properties except impact strength were improved. Frictional properties were affected mainly by tensile strength and hardness. According to the study on the friction coefficient, product of stress (P) and velocity (V), PV limit, and abrasive wear rate, nylon synthesized at 1.0% of the ratio of catalyst to initiator showed the best performance for sliding machine elements.

  • In order to make an advanced dry-friction engineering material, wax-impregnated nylons were synthesized by anionic polymerization of $\varepsilon$-caprolactam in the presence of apraffin wax. DNX-125S, which has lowest melting point among four different kinds of waxs investigated, showed excellent miscibiility with $\varepsilon$-carprolactam and no effect on the polymerization reaction. Five different kinds of wax-impregnated nylons from of DNW-125S content 0% to 8% were synthesized and tested. Among the samples, wax-free nylon has the highest yield and tensile strength and hardness, while the specimen with2% wax has the largest elongationi and energy absorption to break. The wax-impregnated nylon with a wax content 6% showdd the smallest friction coefficient under slow sliding speed and low load. Bus as the sliding speeds were increased to high, thespcieimen with 8% wax has better friction property.

  • Thin coating layer of clay minerals was fabricated on nylon fiber and uv-light resistivity of the clay-coated nylons, schematically shown in Figure 1, were investigated. Clay minerals with higher absorbance protect the nylon fibers more effectively from uv light. The coating process is expected as safe and stable procedure because clay and aqueous dispersion of the clay used for the process is innocuous.

  • RPP(maleic-anhydride grafted PP)and OPS(oxazoline grafted PS) do not react to each other, and thus show immiscibility. In this study, Nylons was added to RPP/OPS blend systems, as a reactive compatibilizer for enhancing the miscibility of the blends. When Nylon6 was added to the blends of RPP and OPS, RPP/Nylon6/OPS was produced. The effects of the molar ratio of Nylon6 on the RPP-Nylon6-OPS reaction were studied. Torque test and FT-IR analysis have been carried out to investigate the reaction of RPP/Nylon6/OPS system. The reaction torgue ratio and reaction efficiency show the maximum values at 1 : 0.66 : 1 and 1 : 1 : 1 (in moles) for RPP/Nylon6/OPS. In the RPP/Nylon6/OPS blends, their mechanical properties were changed with the molar ratio of Nylon6 and showed the highest value at molar ratio of 1.5. Physical properties and compatibility of RPP/Nylon6/OPS were compared with those of PP/Nylon6/OPS. Consequently, RPP/Nylon6/OPS plays a proper role as a reactive compatibilizer to the PP/PS blend system.

  • The frictional properties of nylon can be improved by the impregnation of lubricants like wax, oil or graphite. The inclusion of these lubricants, on the other hand, decreases the mechanical properties of nylon, such as tensile strength, hardness and impact strength. As an attempt to maximize frictional properties, while minimizing a decrease in the mechanical properties, various kinds of nylon containing 3 wt% wax and varying contents of oil or graphite were prepared. It was found that the synergy effects to improve both friction and anti-wear properties is evidenced by impregnating a combination of wax/oil or wax/graphite. The wear rate of a nylon containing 3 wt% of wax and 1.5 wt% of oil turned out to be 1/4 of that of nylon impregnated with 8 wt% wax or 8 wt% oil. The latter showed the lowest wear rate among the nylons prepared with a single lubricant. In addition, the friction coefficient of the developed nylon was found to be very similar to the nylon with 8 wt% wax only.

  • We examined dyeing properties using cotton, Tencel, general nylon 66 and hollow nylon 66 treated with aqueous and ethanol extracts without mordant. The antimicrobial properties of fabrics treated with Artemisia extracts against gram positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and gram negative Klebsiella pneumonia (K. pneumonia) were also examined. The dying solution concentrations were determined from a calibration curve of the concentration and absorbance of Artemisia extracts. FTIR spectra confirmed that antimicrobial components and colorants (such as 1,8-cineol, thujone, caffeoylquinic acid and chlorophyll) were more present in ethanol extract than in aqueous extract. Nylons had higher $a^*$ and $b^*$, and lower $L^*$ values than cellulose fabrics dyed with aqueous solutions of Artemisia extracts; however, the dyed nylon fabrics were brown. Fabrics dyed with ethanol-extract added solutions were greener and had higher antimicrobial properties than those dyed with aqueous solutions; however, they faded and lost their antimicrobial properties after laundering. Fabrics regained their antimicrobial properties (especially against S. aureus) by the spraying of Artemisia ethanol extract; therefore, the application of Artemisia ethanol extract onto underwear is expected to relieve atopic dermatitis.

  • Oil-impregnated nylons were synthesized by anionic polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam in the presence of mineral oils. Reaction rate and molecular weight of the product were not significantly affected by the addition of oils less than 8 phr. Physical properties such as elongation and notched impact strength were improved by the addition of oil, on the other hand hardness and tensile stress at break were slightly decreased. Oil-impregnated nylon with an oil content of 6 phr showed a minimum friction coefficient, which is only 32% compared to a friction coefficient of nylon 6 without oil.

  • Hot melt adhesive based on the polyamide resin was studied to improve the conventional hot melt adhesives such as ethylene-vinyl acetate which have inherent problems against creep and heat resistance. It was found that the terpolymer of nylons6, nylon66, and nylon12 or the nylon blend instead of nylon homopolymer was suitable base resin for hot melt adhesives, since the disruption of regularity in the polymer chains reduced the crystallinity, resulting in lower melting point and melt viscosity. Also, the rheological properties of the polyamide based hot melt adhesive could be controlled by the incorporation of terpene resin, butyl benzyl phthalate, and paraffin wax. The results of melt viscosities and tensile properties of adhesive itself indicated that the optimum adhesion properties could be obtained through the blending of CM831/843P resins with weight ratio 75/25~50/50. The adhesion between steel and steel was tested by using lap shear geometry. It was found that the surface roughness of steel affected the adhesion strength.
