Effects of hot-melt extruded nano-copper on the Cu bioavailability and growth of broiler chickens

  • This study was aimed to investigate the Cu bioavailability, growth response, digestibility of nutrients, and blood metabolites of broiler chicks fed CuSO4 in nano or common forms. A total of 720 broiler chickens were distributed between eight treatments according to a completely randomized design. There were 8 treatments and 6 replicates in each treatment with 15 birds/replicate. The treatments were divided into common copper sulfate at the doses of 16 ppm, 40 ppm, 80 ppm, and 120 ppm (INO) and hot-melt extruded copper sulfate at the doses of 16 ppm, 40 ppm, 80 ppm, and 120 ppm (HME-Cu). The experiment was operated for 35 days in 2 phases (phase 1, d 0 to 14; and phase 2, d 15 to 35). No significant differences were shown in growth performance, feed intake, FCR, and nutrient digestibility among the treatments. The concentration of Cu in the serum was increased in the HME-Cu broilers compared with the INO broilers at phase 2. A linear increase was observed in the concentration of Cu in the liver in broilers fed INO diets, however, no significant differences were observed by the supplementation of HME-Cu levels. The linear increase was detected in the content of Cu in excreta in the INO and HME-Cu treatments by increasing the dietary Cu content. The HME-Cu treatments showed a lower Cu concentration in the excreta compared with the INO treatments. The higher bioavailability of Cu in HME form can decrease the recommended dose of Cu in broiler diets.

Effects of Yarrowia lipolytica supplementation on growth performance, intestinal health and apparent ileal digestibility of diets fed to nursery pigs

  • Objective: The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of increasing supplementation of Yarrowia lipolytica (YL) up to 3.0% replacing 1.6% poultry fat and 0.9% blood plasma for growth performance, intestinal health and nutrient digestibility of diets fed to nursery pigs. Methods: Twenty-four pigs weaned at 24 d of age (initial body weight at 7.2±0.6 kg) were allotted to three dietary treatments (n = 8) based on the randomized complete block. The diets with supplementation of YL (0.0%, 1.5%, and 3.0%, replacing poultry fat and blood plasma up to 1.6% and 0.9%, respectively) were fed for 21 d. Feed intake and body weight were recorded at d 0, 10, and 21. Fecal score was recorded at every odd day from d 3 to 19. Pigs were euthanized on d 21 to collect proximal and distal jejunal mucosa to measure intestinal health markers including tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-8, immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin G. Ileal digesta was collected for apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of nutrients in diets. Data were analyzed using Proc Mixed of SAS. Results: Supplementation of YL (1.5% and 3.0%) replacing poultry fat and blood plasma did not affect growth performance, fecal score and intestinal health. Supplementation of YL at 1.5% did not affect nutrient digestibility, whereas supplementation of YL at 3.0% reduced AID of dry matter (40.2% to 55.0%), gross energy (44.0% to 57.5%), crude protein (52.1% to 66.1%), and ether extract (50.8% to 66.9%) compared to diets without supplementation. Conclusion: Yarrowia lipolytica can be supplemented at 1.5% in nursery diets, replacing 0.8% poultry fat and 0.45% blood plasma without affecting growth performance, intestinal health and nutrient digestibility. Supplementation of YL at 3.0% replacing 1.6% poultry fat and 0.9% blood plasma did not affect growth performance and intestinal health, whereas nutrient digestibility was reduced.

  • Livestock production depends on the utilization of nutrients, and when this is accomplished, there is accelerated momentum toward growth with a low cost-to-feed ratio. Public concern over the consumption of pork with antibiotic residues in animals fed antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) has paved the way for using other natural additives to antibiotics, such as herbs and their products, probiotics, prebiotics, etc. Numerous feed additives are trending to achieve this goal, and a classic example is vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals represent a relatively small percentage of the diet, but they are critical to animal health, well-being, and performance; both play a well-defined role in metabolism, and their requirements can vary depending on the physiological stage of the animals. At the same time, the absence of these vitamins and minerals in animal feed can impair the growth and development of muscles and bones. Most commercial feeds contain vitamins and trace minerals that meet nutrient requirements recommended by National Research Council and animal feeding standards. However, the potential variability and bioavailability of vitamins and trace elements in animal feeds remain controversial because daily feed intake varies, and vitamins are degraded by transportation, storage, and processing. Accordingly, the requirement for vitamins and minerals may need to be adjusted to reflect increased production levels, yet the information presented on this topic is still limited. Therefore, this review focuses on the role and function of different sources of minerals, the mode of action, the general need for micro and macro minerals in non-ruminant diets, and how they improve animal performance.

골감소증 여대생의 영양소 섭취실태와 이소플라본 보충이 골밀도에 미치는 영향 (Nutrient Intake and Effects of Isoflavone Supplementation on Bone Mineral Density in Female College Students with Osteopenia)

  • The principal objective of this study was to assess the effects of soy isoflavone supplementation on bone mineral density in 36 female college students with osteopenia for 12 weeks. The subjects were divided into three groups on the basis of bone mineral density. The experimental groups were provided supplements of either 80 mg of isoflavone (Iso-80) or 40 mg of isoflavone (Iso-40). To the placebo group, 40 mg of powdered glutinous rice was administered. It was determined that many subjects with osteopenia evidenced lower levels of activity as compared to the control group. Isoflavone supplementation was more effective in controlling total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol than was observed in the placebo group. We noted no significant differences in serum osteocalcin concentration between Iso-40 and the placebo group, but significant differences in osteocalcin concentration were detected between Iso-80 and the placebo group. Bone quality indices (BQI) were correlated positively with mineral content, lean body mass, muscular mass, and blood components including albumin, Ca, Mg, ALPase, and osteocalcin. Both Iso-40 and Iso-80 supplementation for 12 weeks significantly increased protein and mineral content in the body. As lower intakes of Ca and folate were noted in the subjects, emphasis should be given to adequate intakes of these nutrients in the subjects. In conclusion, 12 week isoflavone supplementation in young females with osteopenia exerted positive effects on bone mineral density and bone turnover markers.

Efficacy of the combined supplementation of choline and docosahexaenoic acid during gestation on developmental outcomes of rat pups

  • Purpose: Gestational nutrition has an impact on the growth and development of the fetus. Choline (C) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are important and essential nutrients for humans that play a role in the structural integrity of the membranes as well as signalling. C is used in the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, and cell membranes are highly enriched with DHA. The dietary intake of C or DHA during pregnancy directly influences fetal development. Currently, there is no evidence to prove the effectiveness of the combined dietary supplementation of both C and DHA during gestation on developmental outcomes in the offspring. Methods: The current study was designed to assess the physical, sensory, and motor development of rat pups born to mothers supplemented with C and/or DHA during the entire gestational period. Pregnant rat dams were divided into the following five groups: Normal control (NC), Saline control (SC), Choline (C), DHA, and Choline+DHA (C+DHA). The NC dams did not receive any supplementation during the entire gestation period. The experimental groups were supplemented with Saline, C, and/or DHA, respectively, during the entire gestation (E0 to delivery). Results: Rat pups (n = 6/group) exposed to combined C and DHA showed significant improvement in birth weight, fur development, eye-opening as well as weight gain on the 7th, 14th, and 21st postnatal day and pinnae detachment (assessed from birth to postnatal day 21) when compared with age-matched NC, SC or C or DHA pups. Further, significant reflex responses were observed in visual placing and bar holding of pups exposed to both C and DHA, whereas the differences in surface righting, negative geotaxis, and grasping reflexes were not significant between the groups. Conclusion: Gestational supplementation of both C and DHA rather than either of them alone is better in enhancing developmental outcomes in rat pups.

당뇨병 환자의 라이프로그 데이터를 이용한 식단 추천 시스템 (Diet Recommendation System using Life Log Data of Diabetic Patients)

  • 국민건강보험공단에 따르면 불규칙한 식습관, 스트레스, 운동 부족 등의 요인으로 젊은 당뇨 환자가 2017년 대비 2021년에 3,564,059명으로 24.3% 증가 추세를 보였다. 모든 연령층에서 증가 중인 당뇨병은 약물치료, 규칙적인 운동, 식사요법 관리가 필요하다. 이 중 식사요법은 적절한 열량 및 균형 잡힌 3대 영양소 섭취를 필요로 하므로 매우 체계적인 관리가 필요하다. 현재 당뇨 식단 추천은 개인 정보, 건강 정보, 사회적, 문화적 측면을 고려하여 식단을 제안하지만, 건강 정보에 대한 다중 변수를 고려하지 않은 부분이 미흡하다. 이에 본 논문은 당뇨병 환자의 라이프로그 데이터를 이용한 식단 추천 시스템을 제안하여 데이터 다중 변수를 고려해 개인의 건강 상태에 따른 맞춤형 식단을 추천하고자 한다.

The Association Between Food Quality Score (FQS) and Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors in Overweight and Obese Individuals: A Cross-Sectional Study

  • Obesity and overweight pose a significant public health problem, as they are associated with an elevated risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Several studies have shown that diet quality is associated with the development of MetS risk factors. Analyzing dietary patterns may be more helpful in determining the relationship between eating habits and chronic diseases compared to focusing on single foods or nutrients. In this study, our objective was to evaluate the association of food quality score (FQS) with risk factors for MetS in individuals with obesity and overweight. The participants in this cross-sectional study were 340 adults with overweight and obesity. Participants' food intake was measured using a Food Frequency Questionnaire, then the FQS was calculated. A fasting blood sample assessed serum glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and serum insulin levels. Fat-free mass, height, basal metabolic rate, socio-economic score, and waist-to-hip ratio significantly differed among FQS tertiles. TC, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose were significantly lower in the highest tertile of FQS. After multivariable adjustment, our results showed that individuals in the third tertile of FQS had reduced risk of higher levels of TC (odds ratio [OR], 0.982; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.970-0.984) and higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR, 0.974; 95% CI, 0.974-0.999). Our findings demonstrate an inverse relationship between diet quality, as measured by FQS, and MetS risk factors. However, further experimental and longitudinal investigations are warranted to elucidate the causal nature of this association.

An evaluation of the effects of dietary copper sulphate level on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, organ weight, and excreta score in Ross308-Broilers

  • Copper sulphate (CuSO4) level was analyzed in this study to determine the effects on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, organ weight, and excreta score in Ross308-broilers. A total of 1,134 mixed sex, 1-d old Ross-308 chicks were randomly allocated to one of three treatment groups with 21 replication and 18 chicks / cage. For a period of 32 days, chicks were fed with the following treatment groups: CON: Basal diet, TRT1: 0.032% CuSO4, TRT2: 0.047% CuSO4 (Phase 1), 0.032% CuSO4 (Phase 2), 0.025% CuSO4 (Phase 3). The experiment was divided into three phases. Phase 1 (day 1 to 9), phase 2 (day 9 to 21), and phase 3 (day 21 to 32). During days 1 to 9, broilers receiving 0.032% or 0.047% of CuSO4 in TRT1 and TRT2, respectively, had significantly higher body weight gain (BWG) (p = 0.042) than CON. Likewise, comparing TRT1 and TRT2 to CON during days 10 to 21, 0.032% of CuSO4 significantly increased BWG (p = 0.013) and feed intake (FI), (p = 0.024) in the broiler. When compared to TRT1, the administration of 0.032% and 0.025% of CuSO4 during days 22 to 32 reduced BWG and FI in CON and TRT2, respectively among the treatment groups. Throughout the experiment, the feed conversion ratio (FCR) did not change. However, the nutrient digestibility, weight of organs, and the score of excreta remained unchanged. The study found that CuSO4 administration increased broiler BWG and FI without affecting FCR, nutrients digestibility, weight of organs, and excreta score.

전주지역 노인의 식사의 질 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Dietary Quality Assessment among the Elderly in Jeonju Area)

  • 전주 지역에 거주하는 65세 이상 노인 230명 (남자 73명 (31.7%) 여자 157(68.3%))을 대상으로 식생활 조사를 실시하여 식사의 질을 평가, 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 교육수준은 남자는 중-고졸이 47.9%, 여자는 초등졸 이하가 55.4% (p<0.001), 가구소득은 남자는 51~150만원이 49.3%, 여자는 50만원 이하가 54.3% (p<0.001), 용돈은 남자는 6~10만원이 31.5%, 여자는 5만원 이하가 30.2% (p<0.001), 가족형태가 43.3%로 각각 가장 높은 빈도를 보여 유의적인 차이(p<0.001)가 있었다. 하루에 섭취한 식품가지수인 DVS는 남녀 각각 19.6, 17.7로 남자가 여자보다 유의하게 높았다(p<0.05). 평균 1일 식품 총 섭취량은 남녀 각각 1492.5, 1204.2g으로, 당류, 채소류, 음료, 난류, 어패류, 유제품은 남자가 여자보다 (p<0.05~p<0.001), 해조류는 여자가 남자보다 유의적으로 많이 섭취하였다(p<0.05). 식물성;동물성 식품비율은 남녀 각각 85 : 15, 89 : 11로 식물 비율이 남녀 모두 높았다. DDS(곡류, 육류, 유제품, 채소류, 과일류)의 식품군별 패턴에서 남녀 모두 11011 (유제품만 섭취하지 않음)이 각각 47.9, 33.8%로 가장 많았으며, KDDS(곡류, 육류, 채소류, 유제품, 유지류)의 식품군별 패턴 1위는 11100 (곡류, 육류, 채소류는 섭취하고 유제품, 유지류는 섭취하지 않음)으로 남녀 각각 46.6, 31.8%였다. DDS는 남녀 각각 4.0, 3.7 (p<0.05), KDDS는 각각 3.5, 3.2 (p<0.01)로 KDDS가 DDS보다 낮았다. KDDS를 끼니별로 적용한 Meal balance 분류에서 very bad($\leq$6)가 남녀 각각 4.1, 21.7%, bad(7~9)는 각각 58.9, 55.4%, normal (10~13)은 34.2, 22.3%, good (14~15)은 2.7, 0.5% (p<0.01)로 여자가 남자보다 점수가 낮았으며, 평균 점수는 남녀 각각 9.1, 8.1 (p<0.001)로 매 끼니마다 식품을 다양하게 섭취하지 못하였다. 1일 평균 에너지 섭취량이 남녀 각각 1,740, 1,433 kcal (p<0.05)로, 권장량의 각각 84.0, 80.9%로 단백질 섭취량은 남녀 각각 67, 49 g(p<0.001)으로, 권장량의 각각 100.7, 88.3% (p<0.001)로 양호한 섭취를 보였다. 그러나, 칼슘은 권장량의 각각 62.7, 55.3% (p<0.001), 비타민 A는 각각 60.7, 53.9%이었다. 열량 구성 영양소인 단백질 : 지방 : 탄수화물의 비율이 남자는 15.8:15.7:68.5, 여자는 13.8:13.2:73:0으로 남자가 여자보다 단백질, 지방의 섭취비는 유의적으로 높고 (p<0.001), 탄수화물 비는 낮았다(p<0.01), 아침 : 점심 : 간식 : 저녁 : 밤참의 끼니별 에너지 배분을 보면 남자는 29.2 : 32.4 : 5.0 : 31.2 : 2.2, 여자는 30.5 : 33.5 : 4.5 : 28.6 : 2.9로 세끼 식사 중에 남녀 모두 점심이 차지하는 비율이 가장 높았다. 에너지 섭취를 고려한 INQ는 칼슘과, 비타민 A는 남녀 모두, 비타민 B$_2$는 여자가 1이하로 나타났다. 또한 NAR 중에서도 낮은 영양소는 비타민 A (남 0.52, 여 0.42 (p<0.05), 칼슘 (남 0.68, 여 0.54 (p<0.001)), 비타민 B$_2$(남 0.77, 여 0.67 (p<0.01))이었다. MAR은 남녀 각각 0.82, 0.73 (p<0.001)로 여자가 남자보다 낮았다. 이상의 결과를 종합해 볼 때 전주지역 노인들은 식품을 다양하게 섭취하지 못하였으며, 특히 유제품군과 유지류 섭취가 낮았다. 영양소 섭취는 대체로 양호하였으나, 비타민 B$_2$는 질적 평가에서, 칼슘과 비타민 A는 질과 양이 모두 낮은 영양소로 나타났으며 특히 여자의 경우는 권장량의 절반이하의 수준으로 나타났다. 따라서 이들 영양소의 섭취를 위해 효율적인 식품선택이나 추가 보충등의 방안이 모색되어야 할 것으로 보인다. DVS를 종속변수로 하고 DDS, KDDS, MBS를 독립변수로 하여 다중회귀분석 (Stepwise 방법)을 실시하여, 남자는 KDDS (p<0.001)가, 여자는 MBS, DDS(p<0.001) 순으로 채택되었다. MAR를 종속변수로 하고 DDS, KDDS, MBS를 독립변수로 하였을 때는 남자는 KDDS, DDS 순으로 (p<0.001), 여자는 MBS, DDS(p<0.001)순으로 채택되었다. 이것은 DDS보다는 KDDS가 전체 식품 가짓수를 가늠할 수 있으며, 영양소 섭취를 추정할 수 있는 것으로 생각한다. 즉, 우리나라 노인은 유지류 섭취빈도가 과일류보다 낮아 유지류 섭취 여부가 전체 식품 가짓수를 가늠할 수 있으며, 영양소 섭취를 추정할 수 있는 것으로 생각된다.

거세면양에 있어서 에너지수준에 GHRP-2의 투여가 혈장 IGF-1, IGFBPs 및 hepatic GH 수용체에 미치는 반응 (Responses of Plasma IGF-1, IGFBPs and Hepatic GH Receptor to Growth Hormone Releasing Peptides (GHRP)-2 Administration and Energy Level in Wethers)

  • 본연구는 정상으로 단백질을 급여한 거세면양에 있어서 에너지 첨가가 GHRP-2투여에 대한 IGF-1 및 IGFBPs에 대한 반응과, 고에너지 급여에 따른 GHRP-2투여가 hepatic GH 수용체에 미치는 영향을 검증하기 위하여 실시하였다. 시험 결과 HENP (CP 0.34 kg, TDN 1.83 kg/day DM intake)처리기간 동안 혈장 IGF-1 과 39-42kDa IGFBP-3수준은 LENP (CP 0.32 kg, TDN 0.87 kg/day DM intake)기간에 비하여 높게 나타났으나 (P<0.05), 혈장 34 kDa IGFBP-2와 24 kDa IGFBP-4는 영양처리에 의해 영향을 받지 않았다. 각 영양처리 기간동안 GHRP-2 ($12.5\;{\mu}g/kg$ body weight/day)투여는 혈장 GH 반응이 촉진되었으며(P<0.05), 혈장 GH 평균 함량과 AUC증가에 있어서는 LENP처리 기간에 비하여 HENP처리기간에서 유의적으로 높게 나타났다(P<0.01). 특히 HENP에서 7일간 GHRP-2투여에 의한 일중 혈장 IGF-1 변화양상을 조사한 결과 투여 2, 6 및 7일에서 뚜렷한 증가양상이 보였다(P<0.05). 이에 반하여 LENP에서는 오직 투여 3일째에서 Saline구에 비하여 유의적인 증가를 확인하였다(P<0.05). IGFBPs의 ligand blotting 결과 HENP구에서 혈장 39-43 kDa IGFBP-3의 수준의 증가가 투여 6일과 7일에서 관찰되었으나 혈장 IGFBP-2수준은 두 영양처리시기에서 유의적인 차이를 관찰하지 못했다. 아울러 HENP구에 있어서 간세포막에 $^{125}I-oGH$의 결합력을 측정한 결과 GHRP-2투여에 의한 영향은 관찰되지 않았다. 이와 같은 결과는 거세면양에 있어서 단백질과 에너지 사이에 영양적 균형은 내인성 GH/IGF-1 axis는 물론 혈장 IGFBP-3수준의 변화에 영향을 미치고 있음을 시사한다.
