  • The Mokpo coastal waters receive discharges from three artificial lakes(Youngsan, Youngam, Geumho) and other terrigenous freshwater inflows(streams, sewage treatment effluent, fresh groundwater), which exhibit very high concentrations of nutrients and/or organic matters. To understand spatial distributions of nutrients(DIN, DIP, DSi) and other water quality parameters(Chl-a, water temperature, salinity, DO, COD, SS), field surveys were conducted at 10 stations in the Mokpo harbor and adjacent estuaries on May, July, September, and November 2008 within 10 days following discharge events from artificial lakes. In this study, the freshwater flow rate influxed by the operation of sea dike sluice had significant influence on water qualities of the Mokpo coastal waters, although nutrient concentrations in other freshwater sources such as streams, sewage treatment effluent, and fresh groundwater were much higher. As a result of statistical analysis, DIN, COD, and Chl-a had a negative correlation with salinity. Therefore it was shown that discharge extents, time, and nutrients from the Youngsan lake were major impact factors dominating the spatial characteristics of nutrients and other water quality parameters in the Mokpo harbor and adjacent waters. However, despite non-discharge from the Youngsan Lake on September of this investigated period, it was observed that the nutrient addition was taking place in the lower layer of the estuary suggesting nutrient supply through different pathways. This result has emphasized the need to implement the combined assessment about the cumulative impacts on the Youngsan Estuary environment and ecosystem due to freshwater inputs derived from the artificial lakes as well as other terrigenous inflows, or benthic releases.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide a basic data of nutrition services in home health care by analyzing hospital-based home-visit nutrition education needs of patients at discharge. Methods: Data was collected from September 11 to October 12, 2012 by administering questionnaires to 289 chronic disease patients to be discharged from a university hospital in Pusan. The home-visit nutrition education instruments used for collecting data were developed by the researcher. Results: Regarding the demands of home-visit nutrition education, 62.3% of subjects were willing to use home-visit nutrition education and 37.7% weren't. The main reason for using the home-visit nutrition education was "the effective nutrient management in consultation with an individual's doctor", 38.9% and 31.2% of patients who did not wish to use the service gave the reason for their decision as, "Just by managing the nutritional requirements of a family's diet and, the patient will be able to fully recover", respectively. As for the demand, classified with the areas of home-visit nutrition education, the demand for the area of basic nutrition (3.75/5.00) was the highest followed by, the area of educational nutrition (3.74/5.00), therapeutic nutrition (3.67/5.00), and dietary nutrition (3.55/5.00). The demand for the area of educational nutrition was high "Considering the state of dietary management, such as disease status and drugs", 73.7%. As for the relation between the characteristics of the study subjects and analysis of demand home-visit nutrition education, the characteristic of subjects, that is, "regular home-visit nutrition education", "practice of diet therapy after discharge" had a significant difference statistically (p < 0.01). As for the relation between the needs for fundamental home-visit nutrition education and the demand of home-visit nutrition education, basic nutrition, educational nutrition, therapeutic nutrition, and dietary nutrition had a significant difference statistically (p < 0.01).

  • This study was to clarify the effects of forest stand changes on hydrological components of evapotranspiration and discharge. The forest-hydrological experimental stations in Gwangneung and Yangju, Gyeonggido near metropolitan Seoul have been operated by the Korea Forest Research Institute since 1979 to clarify the effects of forest types and practices on the water resources and nutrient cycling and soil loss. The hydrological regime of the forested catchments may change as forests develop. The ranges of change may be different depending on forest types. Evapotranspiration can be estimated to 679mm, 580mm and 368mm in planted young coniferous (PYC), natural old-growth deciduous (NOD) and rehabilitated young mixed (RYM), respectively. The slope of the discharge-duration curve shows the capacity of discharge control in a specific catchment. The slope tended to be steeper in RYM than NOD, the better forest condition. The slope in RYM became more gentle as the forest stand developed. Forests can modulate peak flows through interception, evapotranspiration and soil storage opportunity. PYC and RYM showed 100 and 50mm of threshold rainfall for modulating peak flows, respectively. The deciduous forest did not represent sudden changes of peak flow rates to rainfall, even 200 mm rainfall Forest development in PYC may play an important role in modulation of peak flows because peak flow rates reduced after 10 years.

  • In order to evaluate the applicability of GWLF model which can efficiently estimate non-point and point source pollutant loadings in rural watershed including urban district, the model was applied to an experimental watershed. The model was calibrated using observed data such as daily runoffs, sediment yields, T-N, and T-P. Simulated daily runoffs and sediment yields by the model using calibrated parameters were in food agreement with the observed data. There were difference between the simulated and observed nutrient loading which was considered resonable. The simulated results by the model showed that T-N, T-P and sediment yields were dependent on the amount of stream runoff discharge and land use. GWLF model is believed to applicable to estimate amount of pollutant loading of non-point source pollution for the water qualify control of agricultural watersheds.

  • Environmental polluting materials from road surface drainage are a significant nonpoint source influenced to the eutrophication of lake and ecosystems with a transport development in recent years. To elucidate the discharge characteristics, the changing patterns in concentrations of polluting materials such as suspended solid (SS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogenous and phosphorus nutrients in drainage waters, were investigated during rainfall. Load variation of COD concentration in drainage water samples was closely related to that of SS concentration. This indicates that SS contained a greater part of organic matter. A quite difference between the past pavement and the new well-drainage pavement system was observed in the concentrations of SS and COD in drainage waters. Appreciable concentrations of nitrite and nitrate were determined in drainage waters. The present results indicate that the drainage water from road surfaces is a significant nonpoint source, and that the well-drainage pavement system introduced to skid prevention has an effect on the decreases of pollutants.

  • Since high concentrations of N, P, and organic C cause the excessive eutrophication in water systems, the control of nutrient export from agricultural nonpoint sources has become important. This study was conducted to estimate discharges of N, P, and organic C from a small agricultural watershed of the upper Imgo stream in Youngchun, Kyongbuk. Of the total area(1.420ha), 25% was agricultural land including paddy, upland and orchards and most of the remainder was forest. The resident population in the watershed was 194 in 80 households and relatively small numbers of livestocks including cow were raised. Mean concentrations of nutrients in the stream water were 4.95, 0.80, 6.72, 0.07 and 2.52mg/L for $NO_3-N$, $NH_4-N$, Total N, Total P and COD respectively. Annual discharges in 1997 were 28,991kg of $NO_3-N$. 3,010kg of $NH_4-N$, 37,006kg of Total N. 590kg of Total P, and 29,138kg of COD. There was a strong positive relationship between stream flow and precipitation, and also most of the nutrient discharges occurred in the rainy season (May to August). Since there was no any other industries in the watershed, agricultural practices and sewage from the resident households, forest runoff and livestock wastes were the major sources of NPS discharges. A combination of management options, including management of soil erosion and fertilizer application, could lead to reductions in nutrient exports.

  • Enrichment in nutrients coming from urban sewage outfalls can lead to eutrophication in coastal areas, which can also change the species composition and community structure of macro algal communities. We investigated the structure of the macro algal community within three rocky shores in order to assess any possible differences in their characteristics. Site 1 was located near Tongyeong city's sewage outfall, Site 2 was located near a public beach area, and Site 3 faced open channel of the Ocean. All three sites were located within the same stretch of the coast, where Site 2 was located between sites 1 and 3. We measured the nutrient concentration in water and the tissue nitrogen content in macro algae samples. Nutrients in the water column surrounding site 1 were high in ammonium ($30.2\pm1.8{\mu}M$), nitrate ($26.2{\pm}0.1{\mu}M$), and phosphate ($2.7{\pm}0.1{\mu}M$) content, and were characterized by low numbers of macroalgal species and species and a low species diversity index. In contrast, site 3 exhibited relatively low nutrient concentration levels and a high number of macroalgal species and a high species diversity index. Comparative analysis showed that the tissue nitrogen content of macroalgae were significantly (P<0.05) affected by the nutrient concentration in the water column. The tissue nitrogen content of green algae within site 1 was higher than the others sites. However, the tissue nitrogen content of brown algae was similar at all three sites. Thus, the tissue nitrogen content of macro algae and the macro algal community structure of intertidal rocky shores were dependent on location and the performance of macroalgal communities was dependent on water quality.
