To deal with issues from global climate changes, renewable bioenergy has become important. Algae have been regarded as a good resource for biorefinery and bioenergy, and also have potential capability to remove nutrient and non-decompositional pollutants for wastewater advanced treatment. Although algal-bacterial ecological interaction would be a crucially important factor in using algae for wastewater advanced treatment and resource recovery from wastewater, very little is known about ecological interaction between algae and bacteria in a real wastewater environment. In this study, under a real municipal wastewater condition, we characterized wastewater pollutant treatability and bacterial communities in response to growth of Ankistrodesmus gracilis SAG278-2, which can grow in wastewater and has a high lipid contents. The growth of algal population using the wastewater was inhibited by increase in wastewater bacteria while bacterial survival and cellular decay rate were not influenced by the algal growth. Removals of recalcitrant organic matters and total nitrogen were improved in the presence of algal growth. According to T-RFLP and statistical analysis, algal growth affected time-course changes in bacterial community structures. The following 16S rRNA gene amplicon, cloning results showed that the algal growth changes in bacterial community structure, and that bacterial populations belonging to Sediminibacterium, Sphingobacterium, Mucilaginibacter genera were identified as cooperative with the algal growth in the wastewater.

This study was conducted to investigate feasibility of feedstuff for animal using food waste by fermentation mechanism of indigenous microorganism. To achieve this purpose, indigenous bacteria was isolated from soils to use as an inoculant. Enzyme test was performed to verify activity of amylase, protease and lipase using isolated bacteria. Bacteria(H1, D1), which vigorously express the enzyme activity, was selected and used in the fermentation experiments of food waste. From the analysis of 16s rDNA sequencing, H1 and D1 were identified as Bacillus subtilis and Paenibacillus polymyxa, respectively. In the fermentation experiment, food waste was mixed with rice bran and popped rice to control moisture and nutrient content. Isolated bacteria(B. subtilis and P. polymyxa) was used as an inoculant. From the measured data such as temperature, pH and ORP, it can be verified that food waste adding the indigenous bacteria was effectively fermented. From the nutritional analysis of manufactured feedstuff, it showed that the contents of crude protein, crude fat and crude fiber were enough to use as feedstuff for animal. In addition, harmful components such as Pb, Hg, Cd, aflatoxin and salmonella concentration were not exceeded permitted standards. Therefore, fermented food waste using indigenous bacteria can be used as feedstuff.
This experiment was undertaken to investigate the effect of root zone temperature during the night on absorption of mineral nutrients, growth, and fruit yield of the truss-limited hydroponic tomatoes in winter. The root zone temperature was either controlled to 10, 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$, or left uncontrolled at ambient temperatures. Temperature of the covered beds rose as root zone temperature was raised, but it in all treatments was less than 3$^{\circ}C$ higher than that in the control. Raising root zone temperature, except $25^{\circ}C$, showed positive effect on plant height, leaf length, stem diameter, and plant fresh and dry weight, but not on T/R ratio which was the greatest in the control. Root activity in all treatments except $25^{\circ}C$ increased as compared to the control. Mean fruit weight, fruit count per plant, and fruit yield were the greatest in 2$0^{\circ}C$ treatment. Root zone temperature did not significantly affect the contents of total nitrate and magnesium in leaves, stems and roots. Concentrations of phosphate and calcium increased in leaves and stems, but decreased in roots as root zone temperature increased. Overall, 2$0^{\circ}C$ treatment gave the greatest growth and energy efficiency.
The goal of this study was to screen a useful yeast for Korean traditional pear Yakju (KTPY) brewing and develop its brewing process. Cooked non-glutinous rice and nuruk were mixed, and added into pear juice with various Saccharomyces cerevisiae and then fermented at $25^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Among several alcohol fermentation yeasts, ethanol contents was the highest in pear Yakju made by S. cerevisiae K-7 and also showed high ethanol content in pear Yakju which was made by commercial S. cerevisiae C-2. Therefore, we selected S. cerevisiae K-7 and S. cerevisiae C-2 as suitable yeasts for brewing of KTPY. Maximal ethanol production (10.4%) was obtained when cooked non-glutinous rice (100 g) and nuruk (30 sp/g) were mixed and added into pear juice (600 ml) with S. cerevisiae K-7 (5%) and fermented at $25^{\circ}C$ for 7 days and also its antihypertensive angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity was 57.2%. Addition of antihypertensive starchy materials into the mash was not affected in ACE inhibitory activity and total acceptability of KTPY.
Correlation study was conducted to establish the optimum test level of soil improvement for good growth of corn from the relationships between the corn yield and soil chemical properties in 16 farmers' demonstration fields. Significant positive correlations between the corn yield and soil chemical properties ; pH, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium, calcium, magnesium, cation exchange capacity. available silica, and base saturation percentage were showed but organic matter and nitrogen content were not. The proper nutrient contents in soil for expecting corn yield, 1.000kg/10a could be estimated as pH 5.6, available phosphorus 327ppm, exchangeable potassium 0.39me/100g, exchangeable calcium 5.5me/100g, exchangeable magnesium 1.3me/100g, cation exchange capacity 11.5me/100g, available silica 116ppm, base saturation percentage 58 from the relationships between the corn yield and soil chemical properties. Exchangeable aluminium were negatively correlated with not only corn yield but also pH, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium and exchangeable calcium.
Silicate (Si) fertilizers are well-known for soil amendment and to improve rice productivity as well as nitrogen efficiency. In this study, we investigated the possible reduction level of nitrogen fertilization for rice cultivation by amending Si fertilizer application. Field experiments were carried out to evaluate the productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.) on a silt loam soil, where three levels of nitrogen (0, 110 and $165kg\;ha^{-1}$) were selected and Si fertilizer as a slag type was applied at 0, 1 and 2 times of the recommendation level (available $SiO_2\;130mg\;kg^{-1}$). Application of Si fertilizer increased significantly the rice yield and nitrogen efficiency. With increasing N uptake of rice, 1 and 2 times of recommended levels of Si fertilization could decrease nitrogen application level to about 76 and $102kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ to produce the target yield, the maximum yield in the non-Si amended treatment. Silicate fertilizer improved soil pH and significantly increased available phosphate and Si contents. Conclusively, the Si fertilizer could be a good alternative source for soil amendment, restoring the soil nutrient balance and to reduce the nitrogen application level in rice cultivation.
Effects of oyster shell powder as a liming material were investigated in an apple orchard. Soil texture of the apple orchard was silty clay loam (Upyeong series with 7% of slope) and topsoil pH was 5.6. Treatments of 1,590 kg oyster shell powder $ha^{-1}$ and calcium-magnesium carbonate as much as oyster shell powder were included in the experiment. With treatments of oyster shell powder and calcium-magnesium carbonate, the length, number and diameter of new branches and the diameter of main, secondary and side branches increased in comparison with control. With oyster shell powder application, soil pH increased from 5.6 to 6.8 at the harvest. In addition, it increased exchangeable Ca from 2.6 to $4.2cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$. But it didn't make any difference in chlorophyll, sugar and malic acid contents. The apple weight per fruit of oyster shell powder application was 9 g more than that of control. Apple yield was highest ($37,000kg\;ha^{-1}$) in the oyster shell powder treatment, and the yield increase was significantly different at 5% level LSD. We concluded that the oyster shell powder can be an alternative of lime and effective to restore soil nutrient balance in apple orchard soil.

The annual cycles of plant major nutrients and dissolved oxygen in a nutrients-rich semi-enclosed coastal inlet, chinhae Bay, of the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula are first presented. The water column of the bay is stratified during summer (April-late September) and well0mixed during winter (October-March). During the summer stratification period, dissolved oxygen contents exceed 400uM in the surface but diminish to less than 50uM in the near bottom waters, which often results in an anoxic environment in the inner part of Chinhae Bay. After the breakdown of the stratification in October, dissolved oxygen concentration remains undersaturated until February. The evidence of allochthonous input of N-nutrients throughout the year is readily seen in the water column: however. crude budget calculations show that the nutrients are efficiently utilized within the bay ecosystem, and that export of the nutrients from the bay to the shelf must be negligible. There is no sign of the enrichment of the nutrients in the water column. The eutrophication phenomenon sensu stricto is not observed in chinhae Bay. Using the standing stock of dissolved oxygen and estimation of the oxygen fluxes across the air-sea boundary, a benthic oxygen respiration rate during winter is estimated conservatively at 21-24 mmol Cm/SUP -2/d/SUP -1/. this oxygen respiration rate accounts for about 20% of the total phytoplankton production in winter.

This study was conducted to determine the influence of seeding date on growth, characteristic yield and chemical composition of Italian millet (Setaria italica) from April 20 to May 30, 2003(April 20, May 1, May 20 and May 30) in Jeju. A local variety was seeded on days to heading were lessened as seeding date was delayed. The plant height was longest when seeded on 1 May(131cm) than at the other seeding dates. Stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf length and leaf width had the similar trend with plant height. SPDA reading values were greater at earlier seedings. Fresh forage yield was greatest (43.28MT/ha) at 1 May seeding and decreased gradually before or after this seeding date. Dry matter yield, crude protein yield and total digestible nutrient (TDN) yield had nearly the same tendency with fresh forage yield. Crude protein, crude fat, NFE and TDN contents were greatest at 30 May seeding and then decreased earlier seedings. Crude ash and crude fiber content tended to decreased as seeding was delayed. Based on the these findings, optimum seeding date for forage production of Italian millet seems to be early May in Jeju island.

The production of dry matter, general composition, hemicelluose and cell contents and in vitro digestible dry matter, cellulose and crude protein production were investigated in the Sudangrass and the hybrid of Sudangrass x sorghum, Pioneer 931 and Pioneer 958 during the first growth and the regrowth. 1. Dry matter yield of Sudangrass showed the highest value among the cultivars tested, being 1,638kgper 10a, those of the Pioneer 988 and Pioneer 931 showed 1,404kg and 1,282kg respectively. The effect of the first growth and the regrowth on the dry matter production of Sudangrass and Pioneer 988 was relatively small. 2. The in vitro digestibility of cellulose and the estimated digestible energy value per kg had a trend to be lower in order of Pioneer 931, Pioneer 988 and Sudangrass. But the production of digestible energy per 10a was decreased in order of Sudangrass, Pioneer 958 and Pioneer 931, which produced 4,623, 4,170 and 3,970 Mcal, respectively. 3. The cultivars did not affect on the in vitro digestibility of dry matter, while the yields of digestible dry matter were decreased in the order of Sudangrass, Pioneer 988 and Pioneer 931, which showed 1,068, 939 and 893kg per 10a, respectively. The yields of digestible protein lowered in order of Pioneer 931, Sudangrass and Pioneer 988, which were 134, 130 and 102kg per 10a, respectively.
