Environmental polluting materials from road surface drainage are a significant nonpoint source influenced to the eutrophication of lake and ecosystems with a transport development in recent years. To elucidate the discharge characteristics, the changing patterns in concentrations of polluting materials such as suspended solid (SS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogenous and phosphorus nutrients in drainage waters, were investigated during rainfall. Load variation of COD concentration in drainage water samples was closely related to that of SS concentration. This indicates that SS contained a greater part of organic matter. A quite difference between the past pavement and the new well-drainage pavement system was observed in the concentrations of SS and COD in drainage waters. Appreciable concentrations of nitrite and nitrate were determined in drainage waters. The present results indicate that the drainage water from road surfaces is a significant nonpoint source, and that the well-drainage pavement system introduced to skid prevention has an effect on the decreases of pollutants.
To determine optimal plant density of forage rye in southern areas of Korea, forage rye cv. Paldanghomil, the highest yielding variety among experimental varieties of forage rye, was grown under five different plant density. Yield components such as plant height, and number of leaves were highest at the broad casting. Plants sown at broadcasting also showed highest fresh and dry matter yield. When plants were grown of the broad casting, they showed higher values in content of crude protein and lower values in contents of crude fiber such as neutral detergent fiber(NDF), acid detergent fiber(ADF), cellulose and lignin. There was no relationship between variation of in vitro dry matter digestibility(IVDMD) and plant density. Plants sown at the broad casting showed highest digestible dry matter yields.
Bacillary is the most common form of H. pylori observed during human infection. However, it is known that the morphology change of H. pylori from bacillary to coccoid can be occurred with a response to the environmental stresses such as the nutrient depletion, accumulation of toxic metabolites, pH alteration, and exposure to antimicrobial agents. The coccoid form of H. pylori, which is viable but non-culturable in vitro, seems to be the major cause of antibiotic resistancy and high reinfectability of H. pylori. In this regard, we studied the environmental factors that can induce the morphological change in vitro of H. pylori, and the change of fatty acid composition of plasma membrane. The morphological change from bacillary to coccoid could be observed with the depletion of nutrients, pH variation and reactive oxygen species added in the culture media. This morphologic conversion was paralleled by a dramatic decrease in unsaturated fatty acids and an increase in saturated fattv acids of plasma membrane. The change in composition of membrane fatty acid seems to be a kind of protection mechanism of H. pylori against these environmental stresses.

The budgets of fresh water, salt and nutrients were estimated in order to clarify the characteristics of material cycle in the Gamak Bay in 2006 with Simple Box budget Model. Outflow volume of freshwater into system was approximately $-174.2{\sim}72.5{\times}10^3m^3/day$. Inflow masses of DIP and DIN were approximately 397.0~1158 mole/day and 1750~8328 mole/day, respectively. The Source or sink of DIP was under the control of the variation of fresh water budget in the system. the mass balance and NEM was largely determined by flushing time of material.
The genesis of methods for defining the nutritional value of feeds and the nutrient requirements of animals, and their development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Europe and the USA are outlined. Current energy and protein feeding systems for ruminants are described. Particular reference is made to the Australian systems which are applicable to grazing animals as well as to those given prepared feeds, and enable the effective nutritional management of a imals at pasture by means of the decision support tool GrazFeed. The scheme for predicting intakes by cattle and sheep from pastures allows for the effects of selective grazing on the composition of the feed eaten, and for reduction in herbage intake when a supplementary feed is consumed. For herbage of any given concentration of metabolizable energy (ME) in the feed dry matter the changes with season of year in the net efficiency of use of the ME for growth and fattening and in the yield of microbial crude protein, g/MJ ME, which both vary with latitude, are defined. An equation to predict the energy requirements for maintenance (MEm) of both cattle and sheep includes predictions of the additional energy costs incurred by grazing compared with housed animals and the cost, if any, of cold stress. The equation allows for the change in MEm with feed intake. A flexible procedure predicts the composition of liveweight gain made by any given breed or sex of cattle and sheep at any stage of growth, and the variation with rate of gain. Protein requirements for maintenance, production including wool growth, and reproduction, are related to the quantities of microbial true protein and undegraded dietary protein truly digested in the small intestine.

To determine optimal sowing time of forage rape in southern areas of Korea, forage rape cv. Velox, the highest yielding variety among seventeen introduced varieties of forage rape, was grown under five different sowing times. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Yield components such as plant length, number of branches and number of leaves etc. were highest at the sowing time of Sep. 14 and Sep. 24. 2. Plants sown at Sep. 14 and Sep. 24 also showed highest'fresh and dry matter yield. 3. As plants were grown under later sowing time, they showed higher values in content of crude protein and lower values in contents of crude fiber such as NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin. 4. There was no relationship between variation of IVDMD and sowing time. Plants sown at Sep. 14 and Sep. 24 showed highest digestible dry matter yields.
The middle and lower reaches of the Kum River system become stagnant in dry seasons with florishing of phytoplankton. In this study primary productivity of phytoplankton were measured by the C-14 uptake method and the P-I model method at seven main stream sites of the Kum River from the Daechung Dam outet to the river mouth. Nutrients (TN, TP, DIP, TIN) concentrations were measured in the mainstream and tributaries and compared with the variation of assimilation number. The range of primary productivity was $40{\sim}4,558mgC{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ and it was higher than those of lentic ecosystems in Korea. Average TN and TP were $4.1mgN{\cdot}L^{-1}$, $70.6mgP{\cdot}m^{-3}$, respectively. Tributaries showed higher nutrient concentrations than the main stream. After two major tributaries merged with the discharging water of the Daechung Dam phyotplankton biomass and productivity increased drastically and remained at the similar eutrophic level through the downstream reach to the river mouth. Both dissolved phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations showed positive correlation with assimilation number of phytoplankton. In conclusion phytoplankton productivity is at the level of eutrophic water and it was higher than usual lentic habitats. Nutrient concentrations are critical factors in controlling productivity in the lower reach of the Kum River.
Annual ring formation is considered a source of information to investigate the effects of environmental changes caused by temperature, air pollution, and acid rain on tree growth. A comparative investigation of annual ring growth of Cryptomeria japonica in relation to environmental changes was conducted at two sites in southern Korea (Haenam and Jangseong). Three wood disks from each site were collected from stems at breast height and annual ring growth was analyzed. Annual ring area at two sites increased over time (p > 0.05). Tree ring growth rate in Jangseong was higher than that in Haenam. Annual ring area increment in Jangseong was more strongly correlated with environmental variables than that in Haenam; annual ring growth increased with increasing temperature (p < 0.01) and a positive effect of $NO_2$ concentration on annual ring area (p < 0.05) could be attributed to nitrogen deposition in Jangseong. The correlation of annual ring growth increased with decreasing $SO_2$ and $CO_2$ concentrations (p < 0.01) in Jangseong. Variation in annual growth rings in Jangseong could be associated with temperature changes and N deposition. In Haenam, annual ring growth was correlated with $SO_2$ concentration (p < 0.01), and there was a negative relationship between precipitation pH and annual ring area (p < 0.01) which may reflect changes in nutrient cycles due to the acid rain. Therefore, the combined effects of increased $CO_2$, N deposition, and temperature on tree ring growth in Jangseong may be linked to soil acidification in this forest ecosystem. The interactions between air pollution ($SO_2$) and precipitation pH in Haenam may affect tree growth and may change nutrient cycles in this site. These results suggested that annual tree ring growth in Jangseong was more correlated with environmental variables than that in Haenam. However, the further growth of C. japonica forest at two sites is at risk from the long-term effects of acid deposition from fossil fuel combustion.
Although a generation-related difference in nutrient and food-group intake has been broadly recognized in the Japanese population, few studies have examined the difference and correlation of intakes with consideration of a family line and co-habitation status. We conducted a dietary survey using female college students in dietetic course in Aichi, Japan, and their mothers and grandmothers. A validated self-administered diet history questionnaire was used for assessment of intakes. Data from 110 families were included in the analysis. The means of 13 nutrients and 10 food groups (of the 15 and 14, respectively) showed significant differences among the three generations. A significant difference was observed in the carbohydrate, protein, saturated fatty acid, cholesterol, and fish intakes between the students living with their mothers and those apart. In the correlation analyses between generations, moderate correlation was observed for most nutrients and food groups between the students and their mothers living together (correlation range = 0.30-0.61 for nutrients, and = 0.21 -0.56 for food groups). A wide variation with no consistency was observed for the correlation between the students and their grandmothers (-0.18 -0.59 and -0.33 -0.65, respectively), No meaningful correlation was observed between any two generations living apart. Among the food groups examined, pulses, fish, and vegetables showed relatively large differences for the correlation between two groups with different living conditions. When living together, the correlation coefficients for nutrients and food groups between the students and their mothers decreased according to the increase in frequency of eating out by the students. These results suggest that living together and eating together were an important factor for the resemblance in dietary habits between generations in the population with a marked generation-related difference in intakes. The objective of this study was to evaluate chemical water quality by hourly monitoring(25hr) of Saemangeum esturary. For this study, we selected 2 sites like a Mangyong Bridge(St. 6) and Dongjin Bridge(St. 7). Inflow of salt water was not detected during low tide(maximum 553, 508cm) of all stations, while the salinity rises were detected in spring tide(750cm). When 602m of maximum tide was reached, salinity concentration was increased at St. 7, while there was no change in St. 6. Therefore, We know that salinity variation is greatly influenced by tide height at survey site. Also, significant variance of salinity(p<0.05) was found between St. 6 and St. 7 because dike construction made the flood tide move into the Dongjin river. Total suspened solids(TSS) concentration was increased because of the river runoff at St. 6, and also the turbulance and resuspension according to salt intrusion at St. 7. During the high tide, the water discharge from the sea seemed to dilute the nutrient but to elevate TSS concentration in St. 7. Silicate and nitrate concentrations in the studied site were decreased by the mixing of sea water, whereas the evident trend of phosphate concentration was not found. This result can be explained by the phosphorus condition. Phosphorus exists inactive when it is affected by hydrated iron and adsorbed onto suspended matters. Compared to the environmental conditions of the St. 6 and St. 7, physical factors such as temperature, dissolved oxygen and TSS have statistically no significant difference(p<0.001), but nutrient concentrations were higher at St. 6 than St. 7. It could be suggested from these results that it is important to control the discharge of fresh water by sewage treatment plants located in St. 6 for water quality management.
