  • A study has been conducted experimentally on the natural convection heat transfer characteristics of fin arrays on a horizontal flat plate in air. The effects of fin heights and Rayleigh numbers are mainly investigated. The experimental results are as follows; 1. The mean fin and mean total Nusselt numbers increase as dimensionless fin heights increase at 0.67.leg.H/s.leg.1.67. The mean plate Nusselt numbers increase in case of upward facing fins, but they decrease in case of downward facing fins. 2. The mean Nusselt numbers increase as Rayleigh numbers increase. 3. The mean fin surface Nusselt numbers has its maximum outside surface (Y$_{1}$) where there is no interference from each other fin. 4. The mean total Nusselt numbers in case of upward facing fins increase by 47% and 26%, respectively at H/S=0.67 and 1.67 than those in case of downward facing fins for Ra$_{s}$=6.50*10$^{3}$.>.

  • The effect of the interactive flow on convective heat transfer from two vertical isothermal parallel plates have been studied numerically by the finite difference method. The Reynolds number, Grashof number, the relative length, L$_{2}$/L$_{1}$, and the dimensionless plate spacing, b/L$_{1}$ are varied as parameters. In case of outside mean Nusselt number, left outside mean Nusselt numbers show same values as L$_{2}$/L$_{1}$ and b/L$_{1}$ increase, but right outside mean Nusselt numbers decrease as L$_{2}$/L$_{1}$ increases. The inside mean Nusselt numbers are constant at narrow spacings and increase at wide spacings as Grashof numbers increase. The optimun plate spacing on left inside mean Nusselt numbers is b/L$_{1}$=0.4 at Re=100 and b/L$_{1}$=0.3 at Re=200. For the right inside mean Nusselt number, the optimum plate spacings move to the narrow spacing as Reynolds numbers increase and L$_{2}$/L$_{1}$ decrease.

  • Two-dimensional finite difference numerical analysis is used to study conjugate natural convection heat transfer from a horizontal conducting tube with one vertical axial fin. By increasing dimensionless fin length ($L_F$), the mean total Nusselt number of the upward fin is slightly less than that of the downward fin at $L_F\;{\le}\;0.18$ and is higher than that of the downward fin at $L_F\;>\;0.18$. However comparing the upward fin and the downward fin with the no fin, the mean total Nusselt numbers of downward fin and upward fin at $L_F=0.30$ are increased approximately 4.01% and 5.51%, respectively. As Rayleigh number, Prandtl number and Biot number increase, the mean total and the mean tube Nusselt numbers are increased, but as wall thickness increases, the mean total and the mean tube Nusselt numbers are decreased. As the fin conduction parameter increases, the mean total Nusselt number is slightly increased because of increasing the mean fin Nusselt number.

  • Natural convection in a horizontal annulus with spacers has been studied on the effects of diameter ratio and Rayleigh numbers and position of spacers by experimental method. In case of vertical spacers, the local spacer Nusselt numbers show positive values on the lower spacer, but negative values on the upper spacer. In case of horizontal spacers, the local spacer Nusselt numbers show positive values on the upward surface of spacer, but negative values on the downward surface of spacer. The mean tube Nusselt numbers and mean cylinder Nusselt numbers with vertical spacer are increased 10% and 2.1%, respectively by those of horizontal spacer.

  • A study has been conducted experimentally on natural convection heat transfer characteristics of a vertical flat plate with horizontal rectangular fins in air. The effects of fin heights and Rayleigh numbers are mainly investigated. The experimental results are as follows; 1. The mean fin, plate and total Nusselt numbers decrease as dimensionless fin heights H/S increase at $0.50{\leq}H/S{\leq}2.00$. 2. The mean fin surface Nusselt number in case of H/S = 0.50 and $Ra_c=4.33{\times}10^3$ shows its maximum at $X_1$, surface where there is no interference with other fins. 3. Owing to the interference of fins the mean plate Nusselt numbers at H/S=0.50 and 2.00 for $Ra_S=6.57{\times}10^3$ are 35% and 80% respectively less than the mean fin Nusselt numbers. 4. The mean fin, plate and total Nusselt numbers of horizontal rectangular fins show higher values at short fins, but lower values at long fins than those of upward vertical fins.

  • This paper is dedicated to numerical simulation for diffusion-advective convection in a square cavity during physical vapor transport of Hg2Br2. Flow characteristics of the temperature difference between the source and crystal regions, 50℃ (300℃ → 250℃), partial pressures of component argon of 20 Torr and 100 Torr are investigated and presented as velocity vectors and streamlines, isotherms and iso-mass concentrations contours. Moreover, alterations of average Nusselt and average Sherwood numbers with (a) the source and crystal regions, (b) the pressures of component argon of 20 Torr and 100 Torr are analyzed and addressed in details. Both average Nusselt and average Sherwood numbers are seen to decrease with the increasing values of the partial pressures of component argon. Also, it is found that for the two different partial pressures of component argon, average Nusselt numbers at the source region are greater than at the crystal region, and inversely, average Sherwood numbers at the crystal region are greater than the source region by a factor of 3.

  • The effects of concave hemispherical surface curvature on the local heat transfer from a turbulent round impinging jet were experimentally investigated. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation on the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystals for the measurement of the surface temperature. The Reynolds number ranges from Re=11,000 to 50,000, the nozzle-to- surface distance from L/d=2 to 10, and the surface curvature from D/d=6 to 12.The present results are also compared to those for the flat plate case. In the experiment, the local Nusselt numbers tend to increase in all regions with an increasing surface curvature. The maximum Nusselt number for all Reynolds numbers occurred at L/d .ident. 6 and a second maximum in the Nusselt number occurred at R/d .ident. 2 for both Re=23,000 and Re=50,000 in the case of L/d=2 and for Re=50,000 only in the case of L/d=4. Meanwhile, as the surface curvature increases, the value of the secondary maximum Nusselt number decreases. All the other cases exhibit monotonically decreasing values of the Nusselt number along the curved surface. The stagnation point Nusselt numbers are well correlated with Re, L/d, and D/d.

  • The coefficients of convective heat transfer were investigated when air is jetted to surface of the heated side-wall. The temperature on the side-wall was measured when the offsets changed from 1.5 to 10.5 as 7 steps at the state of fixed Reynolds numbers that were 35000, 29000 and 23000. The experimental results are as follows: 1. The mean Nusselt number is very high on the surface of reattached flow region. 2. The offset and the recirculation flow region decreased, while the mean Nusselt number increased between the outlet of nozzle and the region of reattachment flow. 3. The local Nusselt number is not concerned with Reynolds number on the recirculation flow and on the reattached flow region when the offset decrease. But the Nusselt number increased only when Reynolds numbers on the wall jet flow region increased. 4. The mean and the maximum Nusselt number decreases linearly, and in particular its values rapidly decrease in accordance with changing of the offset from 1.5 to 3 in inverse proportion.

  • Numerical analysis of the laminar natural convection in an enclosure of the 20KVA oil-immeresed transformer is presented. The core in the transformer is modelled as a rectangular cylinder and calculation is carried out for $Ra=10^3-10^6$. The correlating equation between the inner cylinder mean Nusselt numbers and Rayleigh numbers can be obtained. The conduction and convection regimes for the variation of Rayleigh numbers are well represented in the temperature distributions along the side wall of the inner cylinder. For high Rayleigh numbers, it is found that the recirculating flow in the enclosure above the inner cylinder is divided into two recirculation regions.

  • Computational results with pseudoplastic fluid flows for fully developed non-Newtonian laminar flows have been obtained. Those consist of the product of friction factor and Modified Reynolds number and Nusselt numbers with respect to the shear rate parameter in an annular pipe. The numerical results of the product of friction factor and Reynolds numbers and the Nusselt numbers for both Newtonian region and the power law region were compared with previously published asymptotic results, respectively. In the present calculations, the product of friction factor and Newtonian Reynolds numbers for pseudoplastic fluid at power law region in annular pipe is 180% less than that for Newtonian fluid. For power law fluids with different power law flow indices, the difference of the product of friction factor and power law Reynolds number between previous and the present results at the power law region is within 0.20%. The solutions also show the effect of the shear rate parameter on the Nusselt number and about 11% increase of Nusselt number at the power region.
