To investigate the heat loads imposed on a reactor vessel through the natural convection of core melts in severe accidents, mass transfer experiments were performed based on the heat transfer/mass transfer analogy, using two- (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) facilities of various heights. The modified Rayleigh numbers ranged from $10^{12}$ to $10^{15}$, with a fixed Prandtl number of 2,014. The measured Nusselt numbers showed a trend similar to those of existing studies, but the absolute values showed discrepancies owing to the high Prandtl number of this system. The measured angle-dependent Nusselt numbers were analyzed for 2-D and 3-D geometries, and a multiplier was developed that enables the extrapolation of 2-D data into 3-D data. The definition of $Ra^{\prime}_H$ was specified for 2-D geometries, so that results could be extrapolated for 3-D geometries; also, heat transfer correlations were developed.

The present study investigates the effect of the shear rate-dependent thermal conductivity of non-newtonian fluids on the heat transfer enhancement in a 2:1 rectangular duct flow. An axially-constant heat flux and a peripherally-constant temperature boundary conditions(H1) was adopted for a top-wall-heated configuration. The present numerical results of Nusselt numbers for SRDC(Separan) show heat transfer enhancement over those of SRIC. The Nusselt numbers increased linearly as Reynolds numbers increased. The heat transfer enhancement is due to an increased thermal conductivity near the wall, which is attributed to the shear rate-dependence.
A theoretical study by numerical method has been performed on the natural convection of an air contained in enclosures. The enclosures have rectangular cross section with one vertical wall heated and the other cooled, and with two horizontal partition plates of finite thermal conductivity. Steady two-dimensional flow was assumed. The computation was executed by means of the Implicit Alternating Direction (I.A.D) finite-difference method. Two partition plates of Aluminium whose thickness were 0.05mm was employed in computation. Isothemals, streamlines, local Nusselt numbers and mean Nusselt numbers were obtained for various Grashof numbers and aspect ratio and these results were compared with those in the case of the enclosure with two horizontal insulated plates. From the present results, the heat transfer in the case of partition plates was greater than that in the case of insulation. This study suggests a method to measure the overall heat-transfer of coefficient in double walls which supported by partition plates for insulative construction.

The natural convective nanofluid flow and heat transfer inside a square enclosure with a center heater in the presence of magnetic field has been studied numerically. The vertical walls of the enclosure are cold and the top wall is adiabatic while the bottom wall is considered with constant heat source. The governing differential equations are solved by using a finite volume method based on SIMPLE algorithm. The parametric study is performed to analyze the effect of different lengths of center heater, Hartmann numbers and Rayleigh numbers. The heater effectiveness and temperature distribution are examined. The effect of all pertinent parameters on streamlines, isotherms, velocity profiles and average Nusselt numbers are presented. It is found that heat transfer increases with the increase of heater length, whereas it decreases with the increase of magnetic field effect. Furthermore, it is found that the value of Nusselt number depends strongly upon the Hartmann number for the increasing values of Rayleigh number.

A numerical analysis of the effect of the Prandtl number on the natural convection in a cold outer tilted square enclosure with an inner hot circular cylinder is presented. Several Prandtl numbers (Pr=0.1, 0.7, 7) are considered, with different angles($0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$) for the enclosure and Rayleigh numbers ($Ra=10^3$, $10^4$, $10^5$). The effect of the Prandtl number on the natural convection is analyzed using isotherms and streamline and surface-averaged Nusselt numbers. The flow and heat transfer characteristics are found to be dependent on the time for $Ra=10^5$ and Pr=0.1 at angles of $0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$. However, in the other cases, the flow and heat transfer characteristics are independent of the time. The surfaceaveraged Nusselt number increases with an increase in the Prandtl number. As the Prandtl number increases, the Nusselt number becomes larger regardless of the angle for $Ra=10^5$. In particular, the Nusselt number steeply increases when the angle is $45^{\circ}$ for $Ra=10^5$ and Pr=0.1.

The numerical simulation has been conducted for the investigation of flow and heat transfer characteristics of an oblique impingement jet injected to a flat plate. The finite volume method was used to discretize the governing equations based on the non-orthogonal coordinate with non-staggered variable arrangement. The $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$-ν(sup)'2 turbulence model was employed to consider the consider the anisotropic flow characteristics generated by the impingement jet flow. The predicted results were compared with the experimental data and those of the standard $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The results of the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$-ν(sup)'2 model showed better agreement with the experimental data than those of the standard $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ model. In order to get the optimum condition, the flow and temperature fields were calculated with a variation of inclined angle($\alpha$=30$^{\circ}$~90$^{\circ}$) and the distance between the jet exit and impingement plate-to-diameter (L/D=4~10) at a fixed Reynolds number(Re=20,000). For a small L/D, the near-peak Nusselt numbers were not significantly effected by the inclined angle. The near-peak Nusselt numbers were not significantly affected by the L/D in the case of a large $\alpha$. The overall shape of the local Nusselt numbers was influenced by both the jet orifice-to-plate spacing and the jet angle.

Numerical analysis has been performed on three-dimensional natural convection in inclined concentric annuli with the nonuniform temperature distribution of the inner cylinder. The governing equations are numerically solved by successive over-relaxation methods for various inclination angles at $R_{a}$=3*10$^{4}$, $P_{r}$=7.0 and $r_{1}$ / $r_{2}$=0.6. Temperature and Nusselt number distributions are obtained and calculated results are compared with those of published uniform temperature distributions. It is found that the mean Nusselt numbers for the nonuniform temperature distributions increase more than those for the uniform temperature distributions by about 9. 6% at .delta.= 0.deg., 7.5% at .delta. = 30.deg. and 4.6% at .delta. = 60.deg.. In the case of .delta. = 0.deg., the maximum local Nusselt numbers on the inner and outer cylinder walls show at .xi. = 0.5, 1.5 of .psio=100 .deg. and .xi. = 0.4, 1.6 of .psi. = 180 .deg.. But in the case of .delta. = 30.deg. and .delta. = 60.deg., the maximum local Nusselt numbers on the inner and other cylinder walls show at .xt. = 0.0 of .psi. = 180 .deg. and .xi. = 2.0 of .psi. = 180 .deg...

Analytical solutions for the forced convection heat transfer of viscoelastic fluids obeying the Giesekus model are obtained in a concentric annulus under laminar flow for both thermal and hydrodynamic fully developed conditions. Boundary conditions are assumed to be (a) constant fluxes at the walls and (b) constant temperature at the walls. Temperature profiles and Nusselt numbers are derived from dimensionless energy equation. Subsequently, effects of elasticity, mobility parameter and viscous dissipation are discussed. Results show that by increasing elasticity, Nusselt number increases. However, this trend is reversed for constant wall temperature when viscous dissipation is weak. By increasing viscous dissipation, the Nusselt number decreases for the constant flux and increases for the constant wall temperature. For the wall cooling case, when the viscous dissipation exceeds a critical value, the generated heat overcomes the heat which is removed at the walls, and fluid heats up longitudinally.

The local Nusselt numbers have been measured for a round turbulent jet impinging on the concave surface with and without rib. Liquid crystal/transient method was used to determine the Nusselt number distributions along the surface. The temperature on the surface was measured using liquid crystal and a digital color image processing system. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number (Re) 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance (L/d) from 4 to 10, the dimensionless surface curvature (d/D) 0.056, and the rib type (height ($d_1$) 0.2 cm, pitch (p) from 1.2 to 3.2 cm). It was founded that only when $L/d{\geq}6$, the average Nusselt numbers on the concave surface with rib are higher than those without rib, mainly due to an increase in the turbulent intensity caused by the effect of rib attached to the wall surface. It was realized that the rib attached to the concave surface may no longer enhance the heat transfer rate or even lowers it depending on the rib type and flow conditions. In addition, the results by the steady-state method using the gold-film Intrex were in good agreement with those by the transient shroud method.

The present experiment investigates the effects of pore density f of aluminum foam heat sinks, the jet-to-jet spacing X and the nozzle plate-to-target surface spacing H of 3$\times$3 square impinging arrays on the averaged Nusselt number. The performance of the aluminum foam heat sinks and the rectangular plate heat sink is evaluated in terms of the enhancement factor. /equation omitted/. The multiple impinging jet with X/d=4.0 displays higher Nusselt numbers than single impinging jet for 12.0$\leq$H/d$\leq$20.0. With the variation of the jet-to-jet spacing, the aluminum foam heat sink of 10 PPI show higher Nusselt numbers than the 20 and 40 PPI aluminum foam heat sinks. Further, the 10 PPI aluminum foam heat sink demonstrates 26% higher enhancement factor than the rectangular plate heat sink in the range of 7000$\leq$Re$\leq$11000.
