Mediating Effects of Nursing Professionalism between Image of Nurses and Satisfaction with Nursing as a Major among Nursing Students (간호대학생의 간호사 이미지와 전공만족도의 관계에서 간호전문직관의 매개효과)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to identify mediating effects of nursing professionalism on the relationship between image of nurses and satisfaction with nursing as a major among nursing students. Methods : A self report questionnaire survey was completed by 429 nursing students in 1 university in K city. Data were collected between April 25 and May 06, 2016 and analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 program. Results : The nursing students recognized that image of nurses had a positive (+) effect on nursing professionalism and satisfaction with nursing as a major, and nursing professionalism had a positive (+) effect on satisfaction with nursing as a major. Further, nursing professionalism had significant partial mediating effect on the relationship between image of nurses and satisfaction with nursing as a major. Conclusions : These results indicate that nursing professionalism has a positive mediating role on the relationship between image of nurses and satisfaction with nursing as a major among nursing students. Therefore, in order to promote satisfaction with nursing as a major in nursing students, it is necessary to develop and implement educational programs that can form a desirable image of nurses and nursing professionalism.

Image of Nurses as Perceived by Nursing Students and Image Determinants (일부 간호대학생의 간호사 이미지와 이미지 결정요인)

  • Purpose: To examine the image of nurses as perceived by nursing students and clarify the image determinants. Methods: Subjects were 260 nursing students from a nursing college in Chungcheongbuk-Do. They received and completed a structured questionnaire from March 12 to April 20. 2007. The questionnaire data was analyzed using SPSS Win 12.0. Results: The mean score of the image of nurses was 115.89 of a total 165. According to the subjects' general characteristics, the image of nurses was lower in 2nd and 3rd year nursing students who did not profess a religious affiliation, those without a nurse among their relatives, those who were neutral concerning nursing science, those whose perceived personality was negative, and in those whose perceived adaptability was moderate. The mean score of the image of nurses per item was 3.51 of a total 5, the lowest item of image of nurses was 'Many opportunities for promotion'. The mean score of factors determining the image of nurses was 3.86 of a total 5, the highest one was 'Nurses' expert knowledge'. Conclusion: Intervention to improve the image of nurses by nursing students is prudent.

Images of Good Nurses as Perceived by Nursing College Students: A Q-Methodological Approach (간호대학생이 지각한 좋은 간호사에 대한 이미지: Q-방법론적 접근)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore subjective perceptions of good nurses' images perceived by nursing students using Q-methodology and to identify characteristics by types and reflect them in nursing education. Methods: Between December 21 and November 30, 2017, using Q-methodology, 31 nursing students from two universities sorted and rated 34 Q-statements on a nine-point scale according to the degree of their agreement. A data analysis was conducted using the PC-QUANL program. Results: The images of good nurses, as perceived by nursing college students, were extracted into three types, each of which had unique characteristics; the cumulative variance was 55%. Three types were identified as "Task-oriented health professional type," "Emotional companion type," and "Flexible mediator type" respectively. Conclusion: This study investigated the significant differences of subjectivity in images of good nurses perceived by nursing college students. The results of this study can be applied to the development and application of a nursing education curriculum that helps nursing college students form positive nursing images and grow into competent nurses.

The Perceptions of Nurses and Nursing Students on Nursing Law Legislation in Korea (간호(사)법 제정정에 대한 인식 조사 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the perceptions of nurses and nursing students on nursing law legislation in Korea. Method: This was a descriptive study. The data were collected by questionnaires from 1914 nurses and 408 nursing students and analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test. Results: Most of respondents (73.5%) had received the information on nursing law legislation mainly through the nursing news letter, nursing magazine(Taehan Kanhoo), and Korean Nurses Association internet homepage. However, they expressed they did not know sufficiently about the nursing law legislation and wanted know more about it. They strongly supported the nursing law legislation. There were significant differences in perceptions between the people who had a chance to know about the nursing law legislation and who did not. Conclusion: Education should be offered not only to the people who wanted to know more about on nursing law legislation and but also to the people who are not concerned or never had a chance to know about this. It is important to empower nurses and nursing students to be proactive on the issues of nursing law legislation.

Attitude on the Elderly and Elderly Patients among Nursing Students and Nurses (간호대학생과 간호사의 노인과 노인환자에 대한 태도)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify if there is difference in the attitude toward the elderly and the elderly patients among nursing students and nurses. Data were collected between August 1 and November 30, 2012 by using a structured questionnaire and the participants of this study were 423 nursing students in 6 universities and 244 nurses in 5 hospitals. The nursing students and nurses had more negative attitudes toward elderly patients than the elderly. There was difference in attitudes toward elderly patients according to grade, whether to take gerontological nursing course, the level of interest in the Aged, and whether to have experience in living with the old in the past among nursing students. There was difference in attitudes toward elderly patients according to the quality of volunteer service experience among nurses. In order to identify the attitudes accurately in nursing studies or education related to the elderly, the process to classify and define the objects of attitudes in details should be administered first.

The Perception Degree of Teaching Effectiveness of Nurses and Nursing Students on Clinical Nursing Practicum (임상실습에 대한 간호사와 간호학생의 교수효율성 인지정도)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to use as a preliminary data to improve the quality of clinical nursing education by comparing the perception of teaching effectiveness in nurses and nursing students. Method: The participants were 165 nurses and 289 nursing students. Data was collected from June 2 to 16, 2008. The research instruments used an effective clinical instructors which was developed by Reeve(1994). Result: The perception of teaching effectiveness in nurses and nursing students were 3.45 and 3.19 respectively and it showed that nurses' perception of teaching effectiveness are higher than that of nursing students. Nurses had strong points in the factors of "interpersonal relationship/ communication", "availability as a supporter", "teaching method and evaluation".In additions, the teaching effectiveness had significant differences to age, years of work, position, educational background and job satisfaction in nurses, otherwise, sex, differences of educational level, satisfaction of clinical practicum and major in students. Conclusion: It is needed a further study as below: to develop an education system which is to improve an interpersonal relationship and to upgrade the quality of educator; to develop a teaching method program of clinical nursing education to improve teaching effectiveness.

Head Nurses' Experiences in Clinical Practice Education of Nursing Students: A Qualitative Research (수간호사의 간호학생 임상실습지도 경험: 질적 연구)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to understand and describe difficulties and needs experienced by head nurses in the clinical practice education of nursing students. Methods: A qualitative descriptive method was employed. A convenience sampling method was used to recruit participants from four hospitals in South Korea. Twenty-one head nurses participated in the first interview and 17 of them participated in the second interview. Data were collected through two in-depth interviews and field notes were written. Qualitative content analysis method was utilized for data analysis using ATLAS.ti 6.2 software. Results: Thirty-one codes and twelve categories were identified. Four themes emerged from data analysis, which included 'too many tasks', 'limitations of student education', 'many differences', and 'lack of support and resources.' Conclusion: This qualitative study described head nurses' many difficulties and needs in the clinical practice education of nursing students. The results of this study provide valuable understanding and knowledge of head nurses' experiences in students' clinical education, which leads to improvement of the quality of clinical education for nursing students.

A Study on the Fear of Death among Nursing Students and Nurses (간호학생 및 간호원들의 죽음의 공포에 대한 조사연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of nursing education and clinical experience on the fear of death among nursing students and nurses. The fear responses were measured by the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale'which is composed of 4 subsale to measure fear of death of self, fear of death of others, fear of dying of self and fear of dying of others. To investigate the influence of nursing education on the fear of death, tile freshmen and the senior class of the nursing students were compared. The senior students were again compared with graduate nurses to investigate the influence of clinical experience on the fear of death. To investigate the possible intuitional difference in the fear response to death among different group of nurses and nursing students, students and nurses from Seoul National University and Korea University were selected to participate in the study. The three hypotheses formulated for this study are as follows: 1, Fear of death will decrease with increased educational level 2. Fear of death will decrease with increased clinical experience. 3. There wi]1 be institutional difference in the fear of death. The results obtained are as follows : 1. There was no significant differences in the fear of death between freshman and senior students. 2. There was no significant differences in the fear of death between senior students and graduate nurses. 3. There was significant difference between nurses and senior students in the subsale of fear of dying of others in which the nurses were found to be more fearful. 4. There wert significant differences in the subsale of fear of dying of self and fear of dying of others between two institutions.

Nurses' Image Perceived by Nursing and Health Allied College Students in Korea (간호.보건 계열 대학생이 지각하는 간호사 이미지)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the nurses' image perceived by nursing and health allied college students in Korea. Method: The data was collected from October 15th to November 15th, 2004. Subjects were composed of 679 students in three-year Junior College. The data was analyzed by SPSS 12.0 PC+ Win. The difference of nurse' image among departments and locations of Junior College were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA and Tukey test. Result: The mean score of nurses' image 3.1 point of the total 5 point. Nurses' image is showed significantly difference according to the departments; the department of nursing (3.54), physical therapy (3.01), radiology (2.97), emergency medical technology (2.76) and clinical pathology (2.67). Nurses' image was significantly differed among the 4 domains according to 5 departments; 'the qualification of nurse', 'the role of nurse', 'the interpersonal relationship of nurse', 'the social participation of nurse'. Nurses' image formed through directly contacting with nurses' and seeing nurses' action (69.1%), watching nurse in TV drama (15.9%). Conclusion: It is considered that nursing and health allied college students were affected by inter-communications with nurses' more than by mass media.

A Study on the Image of Nurses and the Professional Self-Concept Perceived by Nursing Students (간호대학생의 전문직 자아개념과 간호사에 대한 이미지)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the image of nurses and the professional self-concept perceived by nursing students. Method: The subjects included were 93 students. The research tool was the Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument(PSCNI) by Arthur and Image of Nurses by Yang. Result: 1. The professional self-concept consisted of 4 factors : flexibility, satisfaction, competence, empathy. 2. The image of nurse consisted of 4 factors : official image, maternal image, professional image. unfavorable image. 3. The average item score of PSCNI was $2.94{\pm}30$. 4. The average item score of nurse' image was $3.63{\pm}46$ 5. The Professional self-concept of nurses(p=.0001) and image of nurses(p=.001) was found to significantly according to satisfaction for major. 6. The correlation between professional self-concept and image of nurses revealed correlation of r=.315(p=.004). Conclusion: There was a association between professional self concept of nurses, image of nurses and satisfaction for major. Therefore it is required to develop education program and strategy that helps establish satisfaction for major so that nursing students can experience firm professional self concept and positive image of nursing.
