This paper addresses a study of inner-tank sloshing effect on motion responses of a Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) system, through experimental analysis and numerical modeling. To investigate hydrodynamic characteristics of FLNG under the conditions of with and without LNG-tank sloshing, a series of numerical simulations were carried out using potential flow solver SESAM. To validate the numerical simulations, model tests on the FLNG system was conducted in both liquid and solid ballast conditions with 75% tank filling level in height. Good correlations were observed between the measured and predicted results, proving the feasibility of the numerical modeling technique. On the verified numerical model, Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs) of the FLNG with 25% and 50% tank filling levels were calculated in six degrees of freedom. The influence of tank sloshing with varying tank filling levels on the RAOs has been presented and analyzed. The results showed that LNG-tank sloshing has a noticeable impact on the roll motion response of the FLNG and a moderate tank filling level is less helpful in reducing the roll motion response.
The purpose of this study is to compare the effect on the thermal stratification under various aspect ratios in the solar storage tank using FLUENT. Numerical calculations of three designs with different aspect ratio were carried out to show the behaviour of stratification in a solar storage tank. The calculation results show that the thermal stratification of the 2.5:1 aspect ratio solar storage tank can be 6.22% higher then that of the 1.5:1 aspect ratio solar storage tank and 2.68% higher then that of the 2:1 aspect ratio solar storage tank.
The acoustic power is a major acoustical characteristic of an underwater vehicle and could be measured in a reverberant water tank. In order to obtain accurate measurement results, the acoustic field formed by the sound source should be investigated quantitatively in the reverberant water tank. In this research, the acoustic field of a reverberant water tank containing an underwater sound source has been analyzed by using an acoustic radiosity method one of the numerical analysis methods suitable for the acoustic analysis of the highly diffused space. The source level of the underwater sound source and acoustical properties of the water tank input to the numerical analysis have been estimated by applying the reverberant tank plot method through a preliminary experiment result. The comparison of the numerical analysis result with that of the experiment has verified the accuracy of the acoustic radiosity method.
For the simplicity in the analytical solution, the simple surge tank has been chosen for the test where an unsteady flow is porduced by suddenly closing the valve controlling the discharge. The valve is loated immediately downstream from the surge tank. Momentumn equations in the penstock and in the surge column are measured recored on the oscillograph and then the calibration of surge column heights and scale readings on the oscillograph trace are made. The diameter of the penstock are determined by the trial and error method. The water levels in the surge column are computed by numerical integration of the differential equation of the surge tank. The relationships between the results from the experiment and numerical computation are figured, compared and discussed.
The sloshing tank causes the instability of the fluid flows and the fluctuation of the impact pressure by the liquid on the tank. These flow characteristics inside the sloshing tank can generate the uncomfortable sloshing noise. In the present study, a numerical analysis for the reduction of a fuel tank sloshing noise was performed. To simulate the flow characteristics in a sloshing tank with partially filled liquid, a VOF method was used for interfacial flows by applying a momentum source term for the sloshing motion in a non-inertial reference frame. This numerical method was verified by comparing its results with the available experimental data. For the reduction of the sloshing noise, the horizontal and vertical baffles and porous media inside a sloshing tank were considered and numerically analyzed in the present study. For various installations of these baffles and porous media, the characteristics of the liquid behavior in the sloshing tank were obtained along with the impact pressure on the wall and the height of the free surface along the wall. These basic results can be used for the design of the actual vehicular fuel tank with the reduced sloshing noise.
In the present study, a numerical analysis on the sloshing in a tank with the harmonic motion was investigated. A VOF method was used for two-phase flows inside the sloshing tank and a source term of the momentum equation was applied for the harmonic motion. This numerical method was verified by comparing its results with the available experimental data. The sloshing in a tank causes the instability of the fluid flows and the fluctuation of the impact pressure on the tank. By these phenomena of the tank sloshing, the sloshing problems such as the failure and the noise of system can be generated. For the reduction of these sloshing problems, the various baffles such as the horizontal/vertical plate baffles and the porous baffles inside the tank are installed. With the installations of these baffles, the characteristics of the liquid behavior in the sloshing tank, the impact pressure on the wall, the amplitude of the free surface near the wall and the sloshing noise were numerically analyzed.
Objectives: The purpose of this case study is to assess the current airflow and find the ideal ventilation conditions in tank reactors for minimizing the possibility of exposure respiratory dusts(size of $2.5{\mu}m$, $10{\mu}m$) when workers exchange catalysts in the tank reactors. Methods: A Numerical study was performed to determine ideal ventilation conditions, We considered two sizes of airborne respiratory particles($2.5{\mu}m$, $10{\mu}m$) at 12points from the bottom of tank reactor. We changed input & output ventilation conditions and analyzed the particle motion in the tank reactor. The star-ccm+, computational fluid dynamics tool was used to predict air & particle flow patterns in the tank reactor and a numerical simulation was achieved by applying the realized ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and the Lagrangian particle tracking method. Results: From the results, the increase of recirculation air had a significant impact on removing dusts because they are removed by HEPA filter. To the contrary, Increasing the clean air quantity or changing the input position of clean air is not good for workers because it causes the exit of respiratory dusts through workers' entrance or cause it to remail suspended in the air in the workplace tank.
A liquid storage rectangular tank structures are used In many fields of civil, mechanical and marine engineering. Especially, Ship structures have many tanks In contact with Inner or outer fluid, like ballast, fuel and cargo tanks. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these thin walled tanks in contact with fluid near engine or propeller are strongly affected by added mass of containing fluid. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration of the tank structures. In the previous report, we have developed numerical tool of vibration analysis of 3-dimensional tank structure using finite elements for plates and boundary elements for fluid region. In the present report, using the numerical analysis, vibrations characteristics In deep water tank are investigated and discussed.
