  • Various models and various boundary conditions have been suggested for fluid transport simulations of high density plasma discharges such as the inductively coupled plasma discharge. In this work, we compare the various models using one-dimensional simulations based on the FDM(finite difference method), the upwind scheme, the power-law scheme, and the dielectric relaxation scheme[l] Comparing the exactness, the numerical stability and the efficiency of the various models. the most adoptable model is suggested.

  • This study highlights the accuracy of several single strut models to predict the global response of infilled reinforced concrete (R/C) frames. To this aim, six experimental tests are selected to calibrate the numerical modeling. The width of the diagonal strut is calculated using several macro models from the literature. The mechanical properties of the diagonal strut are determined by using two methods: (a) by subtracting the bare frame response from that of the infilled frame, and (b) by calculating the axial strength in the diagonal direction. A combination between the different width and the axial force models is carried out to study the effects of each parameter on global response. Non-linear pushover analyses are conducted using SAP2000. The results indicate the accuracy of the macro-modeling approach to predict the behavior of the infilled frames.

  • This Daper presents effective simulation of the dispersion of thermal discharge which can be relesed at Boryong power plant. Applied numerical models are finite difference method for hydrodynamic analysis and Masch-model comprised of conditions for ambient current velocity. Application of these models is done in Cheonsu Bay Summing up the results of this study are as follows; 1. It is found that the result for measurements of temperature appears high at southwardly Songdo on flood. The reason is that tidal currents which flowed north direction were accompanied with southwardly dispersed thermal discharge. A minute Particle of thermal Plume has a tendency to dispels inward Deacheon Bay. 2. According to the results of numerical experiment, maximum distance for thermal discharge dispersion appeared 10.8 km at lower part and 8.6 km at upper part with power plant outlet as starting point. 3. Comparative the numerical simulation and Airbone Multispectral Scanner indicated that thermal discharge should be verified separative phenomena. The simulated results were compared with field data set showing good agreement. It is concluded that these model can be simulated well.

  • Due to the structural complexity, the response of a flexible riser under axisymmetric loads is quite difficult to determine. Based on equilibrium conditions, geometrical relations and constitutive equations, an analytical model that can accurately predict the axisymmetric behavior of flexible risers is deduced in this paper. Since the mutual exclusion between the contact pressure and interlayer gap is considered in this model, the influence of the load direction on the structural behavior can be analyzed. Meanwhile, a detailed finite element analysis for unbonded flexible risers is conducted. Based on the analytical and numerical models, the structural response of a typical flexible riser under tension, torsion, internal and outer pressure has been studied in detail. The results are compared with experimental data obtained from the literature, and good agreement is found. Studies have shown that the proposed analytical and numerical models can provide an insightful reference for analysis and design of flexible risers.

  • A review of probability density function(PDF) methodology and direct numerical simulation for the purpose of modeling turbulent combustion are presented in this study where particular attention is focused on the modeling problem of turbulent molecular mixing term appearing in PDF transport equation. Existing mixing models results were compared to those evaluated by direct numerical simulation in a turbulent premixed medium with finite rate chemistry in which the initial scalar field is composed of pockets of partially burnt gases to simulate autoignition. Two traditional mixing models, the least mean square estimations(LMSE) and Curl#s model are examined to see their prediction capability as well as their modeling approach. Test calculations report that the stochastically based Curl#s approach, though qualitatively demonstrates some unphysical behaviors, predicts scalar evolutions which are found to be in good agreement with statistical data of direct numerical simulation.

  • The aim of this study is to numerically investigate a compact reformer system currently under development and to design a better reforming system with more efficient heat transfer and reforming reactions. Numerical models were established separately for both the combustion part and the reforming reaction part. A comparison between the calculation results and experimental data showed that the concentration of the reformate at the exit of the reforming system was in good agreement with the measured data, but for the temperature at the exit little difference between them was found. After checking the validity of the numerical models, the heat transfer between the combustion gas and reforming catalysts was estimated and the behavior of the catalyst bed was investigated as a function of the operation parameters.

  • To carry out perfectly the forming analysis of the extruding products, it is necessary that the friction boundary condition between dies and blanks should be worked out the accuate numerical friction models. But the numerical friction models adapting in the conventional Extrusion forming software may be large different from the actual conditions. Expecially, the use of the existing extrusion forming software is possible only in the limitted range owing to the unaccuracy of the high speed forming work. Therefore, tile prepare of this study is to develop the numerical friction model which describes the friction boundary condition mathematically well, to improve the accuracy of the extrusion farming analysis, and finally to expand the applying areas of the results.

  • A numerical study is carried out to assess the dynamic response and damage level of one- and two-way reinforced concrete (RC) panels subjected to explosive loads by using finite element LS-DYNA software. The precision of the numerical models is validated with the previous experimental test. The calibrated models are used to conduct a series of parametric studies to evaluate the effects of panel wall dimensions, concrete strength, and steel reinforcement ratio on the blast-resistant capacity of the panel under various magnitudes of blast load. The results are used to develop pressure-impulse (P-I) diagrams corresponding to the damage levels defined according to UFC-3-340-02 manual. Empirical equations are proposed to easily construct the P-I diagrams of RC panels that can be efficiently used to assess its safety level against blast loads.

  • For better estimation of elastic property of concrete composites, the effect of Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ) has been found to be significant. Numerical concrete composites models have been introduced using Finite Element Method (FEM), where ITZ is modeled as a thin shell surrounding aggregate. Therefore, difficulties arise from the mesh generation. In this study, a numerical concrete composites model in 3D based on FEM and random unit cell method is proposed to calculate elastic modulus of concrete composites with ITZ. The validity of the model has been verified by comparing the calculated elastic modulus with those obtained from other analytical and numerical models.

  • This paper aims to develop numerical models for seismically-deficient reinforced concrete columns retrofitted using a fiber-reinforced polymer jacketing system under blast loading scenarios. To accomplish the research goal, a coupling model reproducing blast loads was developed and implemented to the column model. The column model was validated with a past experimental study, and the blast responses were compared to the numerical responses produced by past researchers. The validated modeling method was implemented to the non-retrofitted and retrofitted column models to estimate the effectiveness of the retrofit system. Based on the numerical responses, the retrofit system can significantly reduce the peak dynamic responses under a given blast loading scenario.
