  • $PM_{2.5}$ is one of critical air pollutants due to its high absorbability of heavy metallic fumes, PAH and bacillary micro organisms. Such a fine particulate matter is often formed through various nucleation processes including condensation. This study attempts to find the nucleation behaviors of $PM_{2.5}$ arisen from coal power stations using a classical heterogeneous Fletcher's theory. The numerical simulation by C-language could approximate the nucleation process of $PM_{2.5}$ from water vapor, of which approach revealed the required energy for embryo formation and embryo size and nucleation rate. As a result of the calculation, it was found that wetting agents could affect the particle nucleation in vapor condensation. In particular, critical contact angle relates closely with the vapor saturation. Particle condensation could be reduced by lowering the angles. The wetting agents aid to decrease the contact angle and surface tensions, thereby may contribute to save the formation energy.

  • Surge motion of top-end platform induced by periodic wave makes marine flexible riser encounter equivalent sheared-oscillatory flow, under which the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) response will be more complicated than pure sheared flow or oscillatory flow cases. Based on a time domain force-decomposition model, the VIV response characteristics under sheared-oscillatory flows are investigated numerically in this paper. Firstly, the adopted numerical model is validated well against laboratory experiments under sheared flow and oscillatory flow. Then, 20 sheared-oscillatory flow cases with different oscillation periods and top maximum current velocities are designed and simulated. Under long and short oscillation period cases, the structural response presents several similar features owing to the instantaneous sheared flow profile at each moment, but it also has some different patterns because of the differently varying flow field. Finally, the effects and essential mechanism of oscillation period and top maximum current velocity on VIV response are discussed systematically.

  • This paper presents the numerical parametric analysis on the loading capacity of Channel purlins with screw-fastened sheeting, in which the effects of anti-sag bar and corrugated steel sheet on the ultimate capacity are studied. Results show that the setup of anti-sag bars can reduce the deformations and improve the ultimate capacity of C purlins. The traditional method of setting the anti-sag bars in the middle of the web is favorable. The changing of sheeting type, sheeting thickness and rib spacing has significant effects on the ultimate capacity of C purlins without anti-sag bars, compared with those with anti-sag bars. The proposed design formulas are relatively consistent with the calculations of EN 1993-1-3:2006, which is different from those of GB 50018-2002.

  • Nonlinear forced vibration properties of three-layered plates containing graphene platelets (GPL) filled skins and an auxetic core have been inquired within the present paper. Owning reduced weight as well as reduced stiffness, rectangle-shaped auxetic cores have been frequently made from novel techniques such as additive manufacturing. Here, the rectangle shape core is amplified via the graphene-filled layers knowing that the layers possess uniform and linear graphene gradations. The rectangle shape core has the equivalent material specifications pursuant to relative density value. The sandwich plate is formulated pursuant to Kirchhoff plate theory while a numerical trend has been represented to discretize the plate equations. Next, an analytical trend has been performed to establish the deflection-frequency plots. Large deflections, core density and GPL amplification have showed remarkable impacts on dynamic response of three-layered plates.

  • Wind tunnel pressure measurements and numerical simulations based on the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) are compared with full and model scale data in the flow area of impingement, separation and wake for $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ wind azimuth angles. The phase averaged fluctuating pressures simulated by the RSM model are combined with modelling of the small scale, random pressure field to produce the total, instantaneous pressures. Time averaged, rsm and peak pressure coefficients are consequently calculated. This numerical approach predicts slightly better the pressure field on the roof of the TTU (Texas Tech University) building when compared to the wind tunnel experimental results. However, it shows a deviation from both experimental data sets in the impingement and wake regions. The limitations of the RSM model in resolving the intermittent flow field associated with the corner vortex formation are discussed. Also, correlations between the largest roof suctions and the corner vortex "switching phenomena" are observed. It is inferred that the intermittency and short duration of this vortex switching might be related to both the wind tunnel and numerical simulation under-prediction of the peak roof suctions for oblique wind directions.

  • A 1 : 20 laboratory scale test rig of a 200 MW tangentially fired boiler is built up with completely simulated structures such as platen heaters and burners. Iso-thermal turbulent flow in the boiler is mapped by 3-D PDA (Particle Dynamic Analyzer). The 3-D numerical models for the same case are proposed based on the solution of к-$\varepsilon$ model closed RANS (Reynolds time-Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations, which are written in the framework of general coordinates and discretized in the corresponding body-fitted meshes. Not only are the grid lines arranged to fit the inner/outer boundaries. but also to align with the streamlines to the best possibility in order to reduce the NDE (numerical diffusion errors). Extensive comparisons of profiles of mean velocities are carried out between experiment and calculation. Predicted velocities in burner region were quantitatively similar with measured ones, while those in other area have same tendency with experimental counterpart.

  • Degradation of reinforced concrete (RC) structures due to chloride penetration followed by reinforcement corrosion has been a serious problem in civil engineering for many years. The numerical simulation methods at present are mainly finite element method (FEM) and finite difference method (FDM), which are based on mesh. Mesh generation in engineering takes a long time. In the present article, the numerical solution of chloride transport in concrete is analyzed using radial point interpolation method (RPIM) and element-free Galerkin (EFG). They are all meshless methods. RPIM utilizes radial polynomial basis, whereas EFG uses the moving least-square approximation. A Galerkin weak form on global is used to attain the discrete equation, and four different numerical examples are presented. MQ function and appropriate parameters have been proposed in RPIM. Numerical simulation results are compared with those obtained from the finite element method (FEM) and analytical solutions. Two case of chloride transport in full saturated and unsaturated concrete are analyzed to test the practical applicability and performance of the RPIM and EFG. A good agreement is obtained among RPIM, EFG, and the experimental data. It indicates that RPIM and EFG are reliable meshless methods for prediction of chloride concentration in concrete structures.

  • In recent semiconductor manufacturing clean rooms, air washers are used to remove airborne gaseous contaminants from the outdoor air introduced into a clean room. Meanwhile, there is a large amount of exhaust air from a clean room. From an energy conservation point of view, heat recovery is useful for reducing the outdoor air conditioning load required to maintain a clean room. Therefore it is desirable to recover heat from the exhaust air and use it to cool or heat the outdoor air. In the present study, numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate the recovered heat of an exhaust air heat recovery type air washer system, which is the key part of an energy saving outdoor air conditioning system for semiconductor clean rooms. The present numerical results showed relatively good agreement with the available experimental data.

  • Numerical and experimental studies on pipeline laying for intake Deep Ocean Water are carried out. In the numerical study, an implicit finite difference algorithm is employed for three-dimensional pipe equations. Fluid non-linearity and bending stiffness are considered and solved by Newton-Raphson iteration. Seabed is modeled as elastic foundation with linear spring and damper. Top tension and general configuration of pipeline at a depth are predicted. It is found that control for tension to prevent being large curvature of pipeline is needed on th steep seabed and, it should be considered 23.5 ton of tension at a top of pipe on the process of pipeline laying at 400m of water depth The largest top tension of pipe on condition of the beam sea during pipe laying is shown from the experiment. The results of this study can be contributed to the design of pipeline laying for upwelling deep ocean water.

  • The horizontal stability of a Single-Point Moored (SPM) Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility is investigated. Both numerical and experimental studies have been conducted for this SPM FLNG. The numerical simulations feature well the experimental data. The effects of the turret locations are studied based on the validated numerical model. Statistic results of the vessel's motions with different turret locations are conducted and compared. The results show that the longitudinal location of the turret has a significant influence on the horizontal stability, which has a strong relationship with the yaw and roll motions. The calculated top tensions on the hawsers also develop a regular change as changing the turret's location. The investigation will provide a brief of principles with more details for the design of the ongoing project.
