Most vehicles have a heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) device to control the thermal condition and to make comfortable environment in the passenger compartment. The improvement of ventilation flow inside the passenger compartment is crucial for providing comfortable environment. For this, better understanding on the variation of flow characteristics of ventilation air inside the passenger compartment with respect to various ventilation modes is strongly required. Most previous studies on the ventilation flow in a car cabin were carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis or scale-down water-model experiments. In this study, whole ventilation flow discharged from the air vent of a real passenger car was measured using a special PIV (particle image velocimetry) system for large-size FOV (field of view). Under real recirculation ventilation condition, the spatial distributions of stream-wise turbulence intensity and mean velocity were measured in the vortical panel-duct center plane under the panel ventilation mode. These experimental data would be useful for understanding the detailed flow structure of real ventilation flow and validating numerical predictions.

Direct numerical simulations were performed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow subjected to spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces in the near wall region. A fully implicit fractional step method was employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses were obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electromagnetic forces. The decrease in production is responsible fur the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques were used to observe the response of streamwise vortices and streak structures to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are affected by spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces. Following the stopping of the electromagnetic force, the flow eventually relaxes back to a two-dimensional equilibrium boundary layer.

The present study investigated experimentally and numerically the enhancement of absorption performance due to the waviness of falling film in the vertical absorber tube. The momentum, energy and mass diffusion equations were utilized to find out temperature and concentration profiles at both the interfaces of liquid solution and refrigerant vapor and the wall. Flow visualization was performed to find out the wetting characteristics of the falling film. The maximum heat transfer coefficient was obtained for the wavy flow using spring as an insert device through both numerical and experimental studies. Based on the numerical and experimental results, the maximum absorption rate was found for the wavy-flow using spring as the insert device. The differences between experimental and analytical results ranged from $5.0\;to\;25\%\;when\;Re_j>100$.

The cavity oscillation with swirling flow in hydraulic power generating systems was studied by a simple experiment and numerical simulation. Several types of fluctuation were observed in the experiment, including the cavitation surge caused by the diffuser effect and the vortex precession by the swirling flow. Both cavitation surge and vortex precession were simulated by CFD. Detailed flow structure was examined through flow visualization and CFD.

In this paper we present the numerical results of the behavior of the horizontal vortex generated by ejecting a liquid vertically upward from an orifice into the bulk fluid above the orifice. The numerical calculation has been performed for the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation. A simple flow-visualization experiment was also conducted to qualitatively verify the numerical solutions. Three cases of the flow configurations studied in this paper are; firstly, the vortex was generated without any background rotation, secondly, the vortex was made under a full background rotation, and thirdly, the vortex was made during the spin-up process such that only the region adjacent to the side wall was set into motion viewed in the inertial frame of reference. It was shown that the swirl flow at the inlet boundary affects considerably the formation and development of the vortex for the second case. In the third case, it was remarkable to see that the vortex cannot penetrate into the region near to the side wall of the tank, because of the strong swirl flow and corresponding high pressure gradient in the region.
Regarding the aircrafts with a rotor blade system, the miniaturization of them is limited due to the rotor blade length and the tail rotor system. To miniaturize an aircraft, an equipment is required that increases thrust and also shortens the length of the rotor blade. The present study will conduct the flow analysis for miniaturizing the aircraft by applying a duct to the coaxial rotor blade system without tail rotor. First, the verification on the calculated results was conducted through the computational flow analysis on the coaxial rotor blade system without a duct. Then, the flow analysis for the coaxial rotor blade systems was performed including Ka-60 duct, Single duct, Twin duct, and Double duct, respectively. From the numerical results, the thrust coefficient appeared higher with the duct than without a duct for the coaxial rotor blade system. Especially, in the case of Double duct, the thrust was improved due to the increase of incoming flow and the extension of the wake area. These results will be used as the basic concepts for miniaturizing the aircraft with the rotor blade system. The flow analysis on the coaxial rotor blade system including the fuselage remains as a future work.
Direct numerical simulation of a fully developed turbulent plane Couette-Poiseuille flow with a two-dimensional (2-D) rod-roughened wall is performed to investigate the impacts of the surface roughness. It is shown that the logarithmic region in the mean velocity profile over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is significantly shortened by the surface roughness compared to that over a turbulent Couette-Poiseuille flow with smooth wall. The Reynolds shear stress over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is decreased compared to that for a smooth case in the outer layer. These results are attributed to weakened turbulence activity or roll-cell mode over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow near the channel centerline due to suppressed development of u'-structure on the top wall, as documented through spanwise energy spectra of the streamwise velocity fluctuations. Inspection of congregation motion near the bottom wall and time evolution of u'-structure reveal weakened co-supporting cycle for the rough wall case.
Airfryer is used to heat a food up by convecting hot air upward around the food. In this study, we investigated the effect of the bottom-shape of the food container in airfryer on the upward convection velocity of hot air to find an optimal bottom-shape by computational fluid dynamics. Numerical experiments were performed by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with turbulence model. We found that the maximum upward velocity with concave flow-passage on the bottom was bigger than that with the flat bottom and that the maximum upward convection velocity was achieved when the number of concave flow-passage with fan-shape is around six. The pressure drop by the internal flow was found to increase as the number of the concave flow-passage on the bottom increased probably due to increase of the surface area of the bottom. Therefore, it can be said that the optimal number of the concave flow-passage is around six for the flow rate considered in this study.

The high heat emitted from the process module and heat jacket may cause errors in semiconductor process equipment. Barriers were designed to reduce the temperature of surface on transfer module. A designed barrier was compared and analyzed by numerical analysis using ANSYS Fluent. The average temperature of barrier and effect of radiation heat transfer were also compared through absorbed radiative heat flux of the barrier. The adoption of the barrier had an effect on the radiative heat transfer reduction of the transfer module rod. The effect of the angles of barrier from 50° to 90° on the heat transfer was investigated using the absorbed radiative heat flux with the average temperature. The angle of barrier of 50° reduced the temperature up to 9.6 %.

We present numerical and experimental results of periodic flows inside a rectangular container under a background rotation. The periodic flows are generated by changing the speed of rotation periodically so that a time-periodic body forces produce the unsteady flows. In numerical computation, a parallel-computation technique with MPI is implemented. Flow visualization and PIV measurement are also performed to obtain velocity fields at the free surface. Through a series of numerical and experimental works, we aim to clarify, if any, the fundamental reasons \ulcornerf discrepancy between the two-dimensional computation and the experimental measurement, which was detected in the previous study for the same flow model. Specifically, we check if the various assumptions prerequisite for the validity of the classical Ekman pumping law are satisfied for periodic flows under a background rotation.
