  • The paper discusses numerical analysis of tensile notched specimens with the use of Gurson - Tvergaard - Needleman (GTN) material model. The analysis concerned S235JR and S355J2G3 steel grades, subjected to medium stress state triaxiality ratio, amounting 0.739. A complete procedure for FEM model preparation was described, paying special attention to the issue of determining material constants in the GTN model. An example of critical void volume fraction ($f_c$) experimental determination procedure was presented. Finally, the results of numerical analyses were discussed, indicating the differences between steel grades under investigation.

  • In the present study an elastic-plastic strain analysis is carried out for fibrous composites by using numerical modeling. Application of homogeneous transversely-isotropic model was chosen based on problem solution of a square plate with a circular hole under uniaxial tension. The results obtained in this study correspond to the solution of fiber model trial problem, as well as to analytical solution. Further, numerical algorithm and software has been developed, based on simplified theory of small elastic strains for transversely-isotropic bodies, and FEM. The influence of holes and cracks on stress state of complicated configuration transversely-isotropic bodies has been studied. Strain curves and plasticity zones that are formed in vicinity of the concentrators has been provided. Numerical values of effective mechanical parameters calculated for unidirectional composites at different ratios of fiber volume content and matrix. Content volume proportions of fibers and matrix defined for fibrous composite material that enables to behave as elastic-plastic body or as a brittle material. The influences of the fibrous structure on stress concentration in vicinity of holes on boron/aluminum D16, used as an example.

  • We study behavior of numerical solutions for a nonlinear eigenvalue problem on ℝn that is reduced from a dispersion managed nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The solution operator of the free Schrödinger equation in the eigenvalue problem is implemented via the finite difference scheme, and the primary nonlinear eigenvalue problem is numerically solved via Picard iteration. Through numerical simulations, the results known only theoretically, for example the number of eigenpairs for one dimensional problem, are verified. Furthermore several new characteristics of the eigenpairs, including the existence of eigenpairs inherent in zero average dispersion two dimensional problem, are observed and analyzed.

  • The relevance of turbulent mixing in estuarine numerical models for stratified two-layer shallow water flows is analysed in this paper. A one-dimensional numerical model was developed for this purpose by extending an immiscible two-layer model with an additional source term, which accounts for turbulent mixing effects, namely the entrainment of fluid from the lower to the upper layer. The entrainment rate is quantified by an empirical equation as a function of the bulk Richardson number. A finite volume method based on an approximated Roe solver was used to solve the governing coupled system of partial differential equations. A comparison of numerical results with and without entrainment is presented to illustrate the influence of entrainment on both the salt-water intrusion length and lower layer dynamics. Furthermore, one example is given to demonstrate how entrainment terms may help to stabilize the numerical scheme and prevent a possible loss of hyperbolicity. Finally, the model with entrainment is validated by comparing the numerical results to field measurements.

  • This paper investigates the characteristics of unstable behaviour and critical buckling load by joint rigidity of framed large spatial structures which are sensitive to initial conditions. To distinguish the stable from the unstable, a singular point on equilibrium path and a critical buckling level are computed by the eigenvalues and determinants of the tangential stiffness matrix. For the case study, a two-free node example and a folded plate typed long span example with 325 nodes are adopted, and these adopted examples' nonlinear analysis and unstable characteristics are analyzed. The numerical results in the case of the two-free node example indicate that as the influence of snap-through is bigger; that of bifurcation buckling is lower than that of the joint rigidity as the influence of snap-through is lower. Besides, when the rigidity decreases, the critical buckling load ratio increases. These results are similar to those of the folded-typed long span example. When the buckling load ratio is 0.6 or less, the rigidity greatly increases.

  • In this paper, we discuss and review various measures which have been presented for studying outliers. high-leverage points, and influential observations when principal component regression is adopted. We suggest several diagnostics measures when principal component regression is used. A numerical example is illustrated. Some individual data points may be flagged as outliers, high-leverage point, or influential points.

  • In this paper, we study the saddlepoint approximations for the ratio of independent random variables. In Section 2, we derive the saddlepoint approximation to the probability density function. In Section 3, we represent a numerical example which shows that the errors are small even for small sample size.
