Aerodynamic design optimization of rotor airfoil has been performed with advanced design method for improved aerodynamic characteristics of ONERA airfoils. A multiple response surface method is used to consider various requirements in rotor airfoil design. Shape functions for mean camber line are proposed to extend possible design domain. Numerical simulations are performed using KFLOW, a Navier-Stokes solver with shear stress transport turbulence model. The present design method provides favorable configurations for the high performance rotor airfoil. Resulting optimized airfoils give better aerodynamic performance than the baseline airfoils.
In this study, the shape of plate-fin type heat sink is numerically optimized to acquire the minimum pressure drop under the required temperature rise. To do this, a new sequential approximate optimization (SAO) is proposed and it is integrated with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In thermal/fluid systems for constrained nonlinear optimization problems, three fundamental difficulties such as high cost for function evaluations (i.e., pressure drop and thermal resistance), the absence of design sensitivity information, and the occurrence of numerical noise are confronted. To overcome these problems, the progressive quadratic response surface method (PQRSM), which is one of the sequential approximate optimization algorithms, is proposed and the heat sink is optimize by means of the PQRSM.
In the present work, nozzle shape of a jet fan is optimized numerically using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis. Standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model is used as a turbulence closure. Response surface method is employed as an optimization technique. The objective function is defined as maximum throw distance. Three geometric variables, i.e., length and angle of nozzle, and interval between two nozzles, are selected as design variables. As the main result of the optimization, the throw distance has been improved effectively.
This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize shape of streamwise periodic ribs mounted on both of the principal walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel flow. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique. The optimization is based on Navier-Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The width-to-height ratio of a rib, rib height-to-channel height ratio and rib pitch to rib height ratio are chosen as design variables. The object function is defined as a function of heat transfer coefficient and friction drag coefficient with weighting factor. Optimum shapes of the rib have been obtained for the range of 0.02 to 0.1 of weighting factor.
This work presents a numerical procedure to optimize the elliptic-shaped pin fin arrays to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for average heat transfer rate show a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Four variables including major axis length, minor axis length, pitch and the pin fin length nondimensionalized by duct height are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. D-optimal design is used to reduce the data points, and, with only 28 points, reliable response surface is obtained. Optimum shapes of the pin-fin arrays have been obtained in the range from 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.
This paper is concerned with the modification of multidisciplinary feasible formulation for MDO problems using the integrated coupled approximate models. A drawback of conventional MDFs is the numerical difficulty in decomposing the design variables and deriving the coupled equations of state. To overcome such a drawback of conventional methods, the coupling in analysis and design is resolved by approximating the state variables in each discipline by the response surface method and by modifying the optimization formulation using the corresponding integrated coupled approximate models. The validity, reliability and effectiveness of the proposed method are illustrated and verified through two optimization problems, a mathematical MDF problem and the multidisciplinary optimum design of suspension unit of wheeled armored vehicle.
Recently, optical disc drives are required to have high density and capacity in according with development of high definition images and rapid increase of various informations. Consequently, the numerical aperture becomes larger, the wavelength of laser is coming to be short. However, it deteriorates rolling mode effect on an optical pickup actuator. Therefore, this paper proposes new design and optimization of tracking coils for reducing it. First, we verify that discord between the center of force and the center of mass by restrictions of design condition is an important factor of rolling mode effect. Then, in order to reduce it, we propose new design parameters of tracking coils. Finally, we reduce rolling mode effect through optimization of tracking coils using Taguchi method and response surface method.
This work presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of three-dimensional channel with angled ribs mounted on one of the walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer. SST turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. The width-to-height ratio of the rib, rib height-to-channel height ratio, pitch-to-rib height ratio and attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat-transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. D-optimal experimental design method is used to determine the data points. Optimum shapes of the channel have been obtained for the weighting factors in the range from 0.0 to 1.0.
The 2nd order response surface method (RSM) has been carried out to get optimum thermal design for enhanced heat transfer on square channel with bleed holes. The RSM was used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged navier-stokes equation. Turbulence model for heat transfer analysis used RNG k-epsilon model. The wall function used enhanced wall function. Numerical local heat transfer coefficients were similar to the experimental tendency. Two design variables such as attack angle of rib (${\alpha}$), rib pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) were chosen. Operation condition considered bleeding ratio per bleed hole ($BR_{hole}$). A response surface were constructed by the design variables and operation condition. As a result, adjusted $R^2$ was more than 0.9. Optimization results of various objective function were similar to heat transfer in channel with and without bleed flow. But friction factor was lower than channel without bleed flow.
