  • In this study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the finned annular passage were investigated numerically. The annular passage simulates co-axial geothermal heat exchanger, and fins are installed on its inner wall to reduce heat loss from the production passage (annulus) to injection passage (inner pipe). A commercial CFD program, Ansys Fluent, was used with SST $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The effects of the geometric parameters of the fin on the inner tube were analyzed under the periodic boundary condition. The result indicated that most parameters had a tendency to increase with an increase in the height and angle of the fin. However, it was confirmed that the Nusselt number of the inner tube on the coaxial 15, 5, 0.3 was lower than that of the smooth tube. Additionally, the Nusselt number of the inner tube exhibited a tendency of decreasing with a decrease in the spacing in Coaxial 15, $S_f$, 0.3.

  • When excavating a small cross-section tunnel in a fault fracture zone using the shield TBM method, there is a high possibility of excessive convergence and collapse. Appropriate ground reinforcement is required to minimize construction cost loss and trouble due to a fault fracture zone. In this study, the optimal reinforcement area was suggested and the surrounding ground behavior was investigated through numerical analysis using MIDAS GTS NX (Ver. 280). For the parameters, the width of the fault fracture zone, the existence of fault gouge, and the groundwater level and depth of cover were applied. As a result, when there is not fault gouge, the convergence and ground settlement are satisfied the standard when applying ground reinforcement by up to 0.5D. And, due to the high permeability coefficient, it is judged that it is necessary to apply 0.5D reinforcement. There is a fault gouge, it was possible to secure stability when applying ground reinforcement between the entire fault fracture zone from the top of the tunnel to 0.5D. And, because the groundwater discharge occurred within the standard value due to the fault gouge, reinforcement was unnecessary.

  • Sea pollution accidents have been occurred due to the increase of marine ship traffic. Oil spill from the hull hole induced by tanker collision results in the huge sea pollution. Proper and prompt reaction on such oil spill disaster is needed to minimize the damage. Thru-hull emergency wood plug is typically used to manually close small holes, while it is required to develop some mechanical devices for closing large holes in the hull due to huge fluid pressure. Accurate estimation of oil discharge and velocity from such holes are important to develop proper device to control hull hole damage. High resolution CFD modeling investigation on the configurations of hull hole of 7.5 m initial depth and 30 cm diameter, which was observed in the oil spill accident of the Hebei Sprit off the west coast of Korea in 2007, has been carried out to compute the oil spill velocity distribution in terms of flow depth. Friction loss due to the viscous flow and the discharge coefficient of crude oil with specific gravity SG = 0.85 and viscosity of $4-12cP(mPa{\cdot}s)$ at the temperature of $20^{\circ}C-100^{\circ}C$ are presented in terms of Reynolds number based on the results of high-resolution CFD modeling.

  • The passive containment cooling system (PCCS) has been designed to remove the released decay heat during the accident by means of the condensation heat transfer phenomenon to guarantee the safety of the nuclear power plant. The heat removal performance of the PCCS is mainly governed by the condensation heat transfer of the steam-air mixture. In this study, the heat removal performance of the PCCS was evaluated by using the MARS-KS code with a new empirical correlation for steam condensation in the presence of a noncondensable gas. A new empirical correlation implemented into the MARS-KS code was developed as a function of parameters that affect the condensation heat transfer coefficient, such as the pressure, the wall subcooling, the noncondensable gas mass fraction and the aspect ratio of the condenser tube. The empirical correlation was applied to the MARS-KS code to replace the default Colburn-Hougen model. The various thermal-hydraulic parameters during the operation of the PCCS follonwing a large-break loss-of-coolant-accident were analyzed. The transient pressure behavior inside the containment from the MARS-KS with the empirical correlation was compared with calculated with the Colburn-Hougen model.

  • Accurately predicting cancer prognosis to provide appropriate treatment strategies for patients is one of the critical challenges in bioinformatics. Many researches have suggested machine learning models to predict patients' outcomes based on their gene expression data. Gene expression data is high-dimensional numerical data containing about 17,000 genes, so traditional researches used feature selection or dimensionality reduction approaches to elevate the performance of prognostic prediction models. These approaches, however, have an issue of making it difficult for the predictive models to grasp any biological interaction between the selected genes because feature selection and model training stages are performed independently. In this paper, we propose a novel two-dimensional image formatting approach for gene expression data to achieve feature selection and prognostic prediction effectively. Node2Vec is exploited to integrate biological interaction network and gene expression data and a convolutional neural network learns the integrated two-dimensional gene expression image data and predicts cancer prognosis. We evaluated our proposed model through double cross-validation and confirmed superior prognostic prediction accuracy to traditional machine learning models based on raw gene expression data. As our proposed approach is able to improve prediction models without loss of information caused by feature selection steps, we expect this will contribute to development of personalized medicine.

  • This research introduces the method of developing Korea BIM standard (KBIMS) architectural and structural element library and the methodology of converting KBIMS IFC property names with special characters. Diverse BIM tools are utilizing in project, however BIM library researches lack diversity on BIM tool selection. This research described the method to generate twelve categories and seven hundred and ninety-three elements library containing geometrical and numerical data in CATIA V6. KBIMS has its special property data naming systems which was the challenge inputting to ENOVIA IFC database. Three mapping methods for special naming characters had been developed and the ASCII code method was applied. In addition, the convertor prototype had been developed for searching and replacing the ASCII codes into the original KBIMS IFC property names. The methodology was verified by exporting 2,443 entities without data loss in the sample model conversion test. This research would provide a wider choice of BIM tool selection for applying KBIMS. Furthermore, the research would help on the reduction of data interoperability issues in projects. The developed library would be open to the public, however the continuous update and maintenance would be necessary.

  • This study analyzed the effect on the cooling performance of the channel shape of a heat sink for an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). A serpentine channel was used for this analysis, and the parameter for the analysis was the number of curves. The analysis was conducted using computational fluid dynamics with the commercial software ANSYS fluent. One curve in the channel improved the heat dissipation performance of the heat sink by up to 8% compared to a straight-channel heat sink. However, two curves in the channel could not improve the heat discharge performance further. Instead, the two curves caused a higher pressure drop, which induces parasitic loss for the pumping of coolant. The pressure drop of the two-curve channel case was 2.48-2.55 times larger than that of a one-curve channel. This higher pressure drop decreased the heat discharge efficiency of the heat sink with two curves. The discharge heat per unit pressure drop was calculated, and the result of the straight heat sink was highest among the analyzed cases. This means that the heat discharge efficiency of the straight heat sink is the highest.

  • The compacted bentonite buffer in a geological repository for high-level radioactive waste disposal is saturated due to groundwater inflow. Saturation of the bentonite buffer results in bentonite swelling and bentonite penetration into the rock discontinuities present around the disposal hole. The penetrated bentonite is exposed to groundwater flow and can be eroded out of the repository, resulting in bentonite mass loss which can affect the physical integrity of the engineered barrier system. Hence, the evaluation of buffer-rock interactions and coupled behavior due to groundwater inflow and bentonite penetration is necessary to ensure long-term disposal safety. In this study, the effects of the bentonite penetration and swelling on the physical properties of jointed rock mass were evaluated using the quasi-static resonant column test. Jointed rock specimens with bentonite penetration were manufactured using Gyeongju bentonite and hollow cylindrical granite rock discs obtained from the KAERI underground research tunnel. The effects of vertical stress and saturation were assessed using the P-wave and S-wave velocities for intact rock, jointed rock and jointed rock with bentonite penetration specimens. The joint normal and joint shear stiffnesses of each joint condition were inferred from the wave velocity results assuming an equivalent continuum. The joint normal and joint shear stiffnesses obtained from this study can be used as input factors for future numerical analysis on the performance evaluation of geological waste disposal considering rock discontinuities.

  • It is at risk of depletion of biodiversity due to indiscriminate overfishing of ecosystems and destruction of habitats. Intensive fertilizers or development of related facilities to increase agricultural production in poor indigenous areas devastate the soil. Preservation of biodiversity is now emerging as an important issue of global human coexistence. After the Post-2020 GBF Declaration, all governance in agricultural development in indigenous agricultural areas should be supported and promoted as biodiversity conservation measures. A compromise plan to reduce ecosystem development and biodiversity loss can help establish public governance policies. In this paper, a viability kernel used for viable control feedback analysis is introduced to solve conflicting economic and ecological problems in ecosystem conservation, and a mathematical model on biodiversity conservation by the viability kernel is examined. Because all species in the ecosystem are interdependent, if the balance is broken, biodiversity is depleted, which is irreversible and eventually leads to extinction. For sustainable use and harmony of biological resources, a lot of policy consideration is required, such as creative governance that can efficiently protect all species. Subsidies or tax incentives have a direct impact on biodiversity conservation. The recovery of species in a state of decreasing biodiversity can be said to be of great economic value. Biodiversity will allow indigenous producers to be proud of their unique traditional knowledge and have a positive impact on local tourism, thereby enhancing regional identity and greatly contributing to the survival and prosperity of mankind.

  • Directly converting the focal depth and image size of computer-generated-hologram (CGH), which is obtained by calculating the interference pattern of light from the 3D image, is known to be quite difficult because of the less similarity between the CGH and the original image. This paper proposes a method for separately converting the each of focal length of the given CGH, which is composed of multi-depth images. Firstly, the proposed technique converts the 3D image reproduced from the CGH into a Light-Field (LF) image composed of a set of 2D images observed from various angles, and the positions of the moving objects for each observed views are checked using an object detection algorithm YOLOv5 (You-Only-Look-Once-version-5). After that, by adjusting the positions of objects, the depth-transformed LF image and CGH are generated. Numerical simulations and experimental results show that the proposed technique can change the focal length within a range of about 3 cm without significant loss of the image quality when applied to the image which have original depth of 10 cm, with a spatial light modulator which has a pixel size of 3.6 ㎛ and a resolution of 3840⨯2160.
